Re: Flat Panel TV's LCD or Plasma?
I applaude you
You have an impressive knowledge of technology!
I apologize if it seemed as if I was trying to undermine you. Your statement of the longevity of each technology would have been accurate about 10-12 years ago, but each have advanced so much since then. Many still believe that plasmas don't last very long just like many still believe their oil needs to be changed every 3000 miles - they're just things that were standard at some point in the past that are just simply outdated.
Ian is precisely correct. I have calibrated a number of plasma displays that were more than 5 years old and every one of them was still able to produce images that were completely in line with industry standards and all of them were still making absolutely beautiful pictures. I suspect that at some point LG and Samsung will also exit the plasma business but until then I will continue to recommend plasma to family and friends who want the very best HD performance, particularly if they're sports fans.
I was at BB this weekend browsing for a few things. I saw the 60" Samsung plasma that I thought I wanted for the first time. It's currently $999 and one heck of a deal for such a large screen. Sadly enough, it was not good at all. I was 8' away and I could still see the pixels. Of course, the TV was on it "Retail" settings with ridiculous color and brightness. I grabbed the remote for a quick "tuning" session. I put the picture settings to ones very similar to that of my current 50" Samsung plasma. It was sitting next to a 55" LG LED-LCD and it just simply didn't have the black performance or the crispness of the LG. The colors just seemed off. It was truly disappointing. Now, I know it's very hard to compare TV's in a store setting, but this was blatant. Even my wife, who is anything but an A/V geek, said the LG had a much better picture. Once we were to get the Samsung in a room by itself, I'm sure I could make it look better, but it's always hard to sell a plasma when they're sitting next to LED's. 90% of people out there think "bright colors" means "better picture." They don't realize that those bright colors are wayyyyy beyond what normal is.
