Our dog is a 100 lb. German Shepherd, and one of the reasons we got the Ridgeline, so he could ride in the bed. I just carpeted the bed today and it looks great. Carpet's white, and my Ridge is blue, but the white is going to be cooler, and I don't care if he gets it dirty. At first I hooked the front of the carpet over the front tie down hooks (by the cab), but then one side accidentally came off (I'd cut it too close to the edge) but it's good as is. We tested it also, and he gives it a paws up.

Yes, our girls love being near us. They like having the cool air blow on them. Our older girl often positions herself right in fron of the vent. We've put up a couple of bars behind the back seat to keep them from coming up onto the console and from breaking the vent control off. She can still put her head on the console and have the cool air blow on her chest.
I'm glad you carpeted the back. I climbed into the truck bed on a hot day and almost burned myself. It gets hot on that black bed.
Dogs love to go. Dogs that go are more manageable and better socialized.
I do hope that you use some sort of restraint for your dog. I hate seeing unrestrained dogs in the backs of trucks. I've seen dogs that have fallen out too many times.
