How do I make sure I'm not buying a leaker?

I've seen mentions of leak problems in the 06's. Suddenly, the water droplets on the inside front windshield of the 06 RTS I test drove yesterday make sense. The salesman laughed it off as someone having left the window open, but that wasn't quite sensical since the droplets were fairly nicely spread across the entire windshield (this is in rainy Bellingham Washington). It would have taken one weird sideways rain to do that, and we hadn't had that kind of rain in a week. Now I understand the real story.

Wasn't interested in that one anyway, but still.

What I am interested now is another used 06 RTL. Was only owned four months. Story is that it was a military transfer from Colorado, and CARFAX verifies the Colorado and four month part. How can I be sure it's not a leaker?

And was that defect fixed in the 07s?

Come to think of it, can someone thumbnail the improvements made between 06 and 07 for me? Are there any other reasons, other than getting the best deal I can, I should avoid buying an 06?

Re: How do I make sure I'm not buying a leaker?

Unfortunately, it appears that some of the 07's are also leaking. BUT... I have an 06 built in one of the worst leak-prone months, and mine remains leak free after 28,000 miles and a year and a half (knock on wood). See some of the recent posts by people with leaking 07's, and maybe you'll find some good info there. Good luck!

Neecies, the first thing to check is the drivers side floor board. If you test drive one pull the mat out and check to see if it is damp. If so you have your first clue it is a leaker. I have a 07 that I bought in Sep and I just discovered that it is a leaker. Taking it back next week to have the dealer fixe it. Hope they don't try to pull one on me or they will get it back.

Re: How do I make sure I'm not buying a leaker?

When I had my water leak problem, it was only after going thru high pressure car washes. When they tried to duplicate it at the dealership, it didn't work with their car wash. It wasn't until the third time (and a different dealership) that they found the TSB on it.

Mine leaked at the two front floorboards, and has not ever since they did the TSB repair over 1 1/2 years ago.

Pop the hood and look at the passenger side fender wall area. You will see an opening in the rear part of the fender. Place a garden hose in the opening and turn it on. This will fill the fender area up and test if the drain has been properly assembled (see technical bulletin). Turn water off and pull the carpet back on the passenger side to check for water.

Buy the 06 if you want it...
but buy it on the condition that they "dealership" fixes the leak.
So if the leak does persists... you'll have them against the wall.

no way of telling which ones are going to leak, but they are under warranty for 3/36

Right on. Aside from test driving during bad weather (which I think every dealer should allow), there's only one way to make sure, man.
