Re: Honda Black Box??

General Motors started "black boxing" crash data on airbag-equipped 1973 Impalas sold as government fleet vehicles. However, the 1973 Oldsmobile Toronado with the optional airbag marked the beginning of recording deployment data on a model available to the general public. With today's technology and the wide array of multiplexed sensors installed on vehicles, just about everything short of an audio/visual capture of the actual event can and is recorded.

The primary purpose of recording this information is so engineers can analyze real-world crash data in an effort to further improve driver safety. As far as I know, the data cannot legally be used as evidence at the present time. However, it makes great supporting evidence when a driver says he was "only going 35 MPH" when the vehicle was obviously smooshed up like an accordian and the black box recorded an 80ms deceleration from 100-0!
