You guys can laugh all you want but the truth is that what happened to the Civic owner is not entirely impossible. I witnessed a woman flip her Pontiac 6000 onto it's roof by sliding on a patch of ice, using the median as a launch ramp; all @ no more than 5 mph just before a traffic light right next to me!
In the '80's, Audi 5000 models were notorious for the now infamous, "unintended acceleration". As there were no drive-by-wire electro-mechanical throttle systems at the time, the problem was simply found to be a bad design that had both the brake and accelerator pedals too close together. Most of these cases involved women who complained that the harder that they pushed down on the brake, the more the car would lurch. It was later found that the majority of them were wearing high heels which further aggrevated the situation.
