Sounds familiar. I also have a town-run free mulch facility.

Everytime I go, there are always a bunch of domestic truck owners giving me those looks...like they start drooling at the thought of me needing to get towed from the mud once I'm loaded up. The 2nd-to-last time I was there it seemed everyone was disappointed I made it out without issue, as it was particularly muddy.

I put a 1/4 piece of plywood in the bed to try to keep the mulch out of the trunk cracks, and I also put a tarp over the tailgate to prevent scratches in the tailgate, because the loader is wider than the bed. The operator is very considerate, and does his best to try to fill only half of the bucket but the tarp is to prevent the overflow from scratching.
