Engine replacement

HI, I am new to the forum and has searched for engine types, but is struggling somewhat finding the relevant information.
I have a Ridgeline 2008 and the engine has broke down and I have to replace it, planning to buy an used one. Do I have to go for a 2008 model or will a newer engine also fit?
Thanks,
Eyvind

Re: Engine replacement

Any year will fit, but in some states you must install a same-year or newer engine. This is supposed to maintain emissions standards.
I ran into this in Pennsylvania when a car I gave to a family member failed inspection due to the engine being older than the chassis.

Re: Engine replacement

That is an excellent question, since the 2009 and up engines have some nice enhancements. The tranny for 2009 and up have had some of the ratios tweaked too.

I'm curious to know the answer to this.

Also am curious to learn what happened to the engine in your RL?

Re: Engine replacement

Any engine will work. Im not sure how they (state inspection) would know if the engine was replaced? I know NY doesn't check VINs on engine blocks. Might be different for other states but I find it odd that they would check that.

Re: Engine replacement

Does it matter that Honda moved from a MAP to a MAF in 2009? I don't know what all is associated with the changes.

It shouldn't, just swap everything over to the long block from the old to the new.

Re: Engine replacement

Thanks for the quick reply!

I read another place at this forum that there were two edition of the engine j35a9 (2006-2009 honda ridgeline engine) and the j35z5 (2010+ honda ridgeline engine), but as you say any engine will work, that's good to hear.

Just some background for engine break down. This car goes in Norway and was imported from US (since we do not have these great cars here otherwise...) and a lpg system was added to the engine. When driving on lpg the engine seemed not to get enough lubrication, there is a separate lubricating system, but not for the piston in the cylinder. So too dry environment in the cylinder is not good for the engine....(this system will certainly be removed).
So now I am looking for an engine to replace the old one.
