Fuel economy experiment without ILP

I just did an experiment to see whether fuel economy is affected by not performing an Idle Learn Procedure. I've had my battery disconnected a lot in recent months and my gas mileage has been a couple mpg lower than normal, so I wanted to test this theory in a controlled experiment.

I had my battery disconnected for half a day at the shop during a remote starter installation. After hooking the battery back up, I immediately left for my parents house, let the car sit for 2 days then drove back today. I always get between 19-20 mpg during the 500-mile roundtrip, but this time I only got 16 mpg.

I'm convinced that disconnecting your battery for a few hours will trigger the need to perform an ILP or else your gas mileage will suffer by a few mpg.

I don't think the loss in mpg is permanent. Even without performing ILP the engine should readjust over time. Of course, you could be spending more on gas until it does.

I've also heard the engine will learn by itself, but who knows how long it will take! I think I will not do the ILP and see how long it takes for my gas mileage to go back to normal.

laserguy: What's the difference? Aren't they basically the same procedure, as in you do them back to back as 1 procedure?

I thought it was not necessary to do CKP every time, but you would not do CKP without doing ILP first.

It's a lot easier to just start it and let it idle for 30 min and skip the CKP after disconnecting the battery! Thanks I thought I had to do both every time

Re: Fuel economy experiment without ILP

If you use a scan tool device to clear any codes, be advised it will also clear the ILP and CKP patterns, so both will have to be redone.

I don't believe a simple battery replacement requires ILP and CKP learn procedures to be repeated. In the FSM, there are numerous instances where the negative cable is removed from the battery for various reasons. In the reattachment portion, there is never a mention of redoing those procedures, only resetting the clock and radio and nav codes.
