Re: Retrax Tonneau Cover AVAILABLE NOW + Di$count for ROC Members!

Just ordered mine on Monday for 849+shipping to WA ($56 I believe). I went for the tailgate seal and the electric tailgate lock as well. It's all supposed to be here tomorrow, so I'll have some installation pics in a couple days.

If either of you guys think of it while your taking photos, could you take a photo of the spirals inside the canister? It's what the Retrax coils up into and is visible from either end of the canister before it's installed. I'd like to see the new design.

Unhappy Re: Retrax Tonneau Cover AVAILABLE NOW + Di$count for ROC Members!

I hope the new design on the Retrax canister is much improved. I purchased my Retrax in the Fall of 2005 and have had to replace my canister twice!! Both times the canister was shredded and on my last replacement when the Retrax was opened so replacement could be done, the nice shiny top was badly scrached. Also wish the Retrax did not leak water, but oh well, it does hide items inside. Good luck to all new and future customers.

Gee, sorry to hear that Ridge Runner.

Even with the old spirals I've yet to have a problem and I'm going on a year with mine. It leaks so little water that I never installed the drain tubes. They're still sitting in the trunk.

Re: Retrax Tonneau Cover AVAILABLE NOW + Di$count for ROC Members!

MANY THANKS to all the folks who posted info on buying and installing the Retrax! Based on your feedback, I ordered mine today (3-17-08). Should be here in 4 days. With the great info provided here on the forum, installation should be a breeze.

The cost of my Retrax was $928, and this included the tailgate seal ($23) and shipping costs. Can't wait to put that baby on!

I've only been an ROC member for about 7 weeks (got my '08 RTL 7 weeks ago), and I just want to acknowlege how great the folks here are. VERY helpful, and often very funny. I've definitely gotten addicted to reading the daily posts. Again, THANK YOU ROC members!
Tom

Re: Retrax Tonneau Cover AVAILABLE NOW + Di$count for ROC Members!

I received my Retrax on Friday, installed Saturday night. The installation was by no means difficult, but it took longer than it should have as my delivery was missing some hardware and I had to make a trip in to Home Depot to get what I needed. No big deal though - an hour and a couple bucks later and I had the right parts.
I did the install myself which, although it is doable, I would not really recommend. The unit isn't heavy, just a little tough to move gracefully. But, it was done without incident.
I ordered the tailgate gasket and electronic tailgate lock as well - just finished the install on those this evening (pics coming).
I bought a tube of black silicone to help improve the water resistance of the cover, but so far it hasn't appeared necessary. It was raining pretty hard today so I backed out of the garage just to see what happened... no water. I'm going to wash the RL in the next couple of days and will see what I get from that.

I have to say I'm very impressed so far. Not only is it a remarkably functional cover, but it looks great!

Re: Retrax Tonneau Cover AVAILABLE NOW + Di$count for ROC Members!

I am in the market for a Tonneau. I'm currently torn between the Retrax and the Full Metal Jack Rabbit. I really prefer the Retrax, but have been deterred by earlier comments about a fluttering or rattling sound. Some people seem to experience it to varying degrees. I was wondering if any improvements or modifications had been made to the design to eliminate this problem. Any comments?

I was a little concerned about that with the Retrax also, but so far I have noticed no noise at any speed (so far up to 70 MPH). Even with the back window open I don't hear anything, and I'm pretty sensitive to any vehicle noises. There is very little vertical play in the cover, and assuming you have everything tightened down during the install there isn't much that is going to rattle.

The noise you're talking about is rather insignificant. I own a Retrax and don't hear it at all. I'm sure if the rear sliding window were open it could be heard, but I rarely open it. In order to create the noise or fluttering you would need to be traveling at very high speeds.

I can't address the FMJ, but whatever turbulence conditions create the flutter in the Retrax will also affect the FMJ. The FMJ is aerodynamically similar to the Retrax. I think the jury is still out on weather or not the FMJ reacts similarly.

Good luck with your choice, tcllamas. You're considering two very fine tonneaus. I would be happy with either of them.

Re: Retrax Tonneau Cover AVAILABLE NOW + Di$count for ROC Members!

Well I am now a member of the Retrax community. Installed mine last night, overall was easy, had to take it out to adjust the front mounting bracket, mine was not quite level. But now that it is in I REALLY like the look. Will report back once I have a little more use over the next few days.

My brother in law, the assistant, and I were also contemplating placing some sort of graphic on the retrax, thinking some sort of non-permanent vinyl application. Maybe a Sox logo, has anyone tried anything like this on a Retrax?
