It's also interesting to learn the torque wrench can be used to read in reverse. Didn't know that.

I can not comment on all, but the one I have can. The instructions for it indicate for the wrench ' torque setting to be set to 0 for storage as well.

The pointer type can be read either way. Click types can also, as long as you switch the ratchet the other way. I don't suggest using it to loosen fasteners. Use a breaker bar or a 4-way. It will help keep it in calibration. As Mike says, remove the torque from click types and set the lock ring before storage.

Should the tension be released when storing a torque wrench?

When I loosened the lugnuts, I used the torque wrench. Got to thinking later, maybe I should have used a lug wrench. Which is correct?
Max. of 20% of the highest setting, and zero is not good. You want a bit of tension.

Re: Where to find tools

I'm a toolaholic, I have 3 torque wrenches. They cover different torque ranges. I mainly use one for torquing lug nuts, playing on track like I do means I have wheels off the car a lot.

Chris C since you claim to be a novice in the car of cars I will add this piece of advice. When mounting a wheel tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern. that will help insure a true fit.

Re: Where to find tools

Thanks for the tip, but I'm not that much of a novice. I just didn't know why torque wrenches were needed on wheels..........or oil pans, for that matter. I've been working on vehicles since the early 60's. I've removed and replaced about everything I can think of.........except an engine or trannie. And I've never owned or used a torque wrench. Doesn't mean it's the way to do it...............it's just the way I've done it.
