FMJ Pull Strap experiences
I've been scouring the posts for more information on the Pace Edwards FMJ tonneau cover - specifically how folks are finding the spring loaded mechanisms and the convenience of the pull strap. I'm trying to decide between the Retrax (I like the simple 'walk to close' idea) and the FMJ (I prefer metal over the plastic/metal combo of the Retrax). As I've seen from the many posts, each has its good and bad points, it really depends on what your preferences are.
So, any Pace Edward owners willing to share their experiences on the open & close mechanics of the jackrabbit or the FMJ? thanks, PeterDk |

Re: FMJ Pull Strap experiences
I second breakfastchef's opinion of the FMJ pull straps. They are a primary reason I went with the Retrax. The higher cost of the FMJ was the other reason. However, I think both are excellent covers, and you should be pleased with either of them. Good luck with your decision.

Re: FMJ Pull Strap experiences
My Roll N lock has a pull strap but I don't use it most of the time. I just slide it back by standing on the side and pulling the cover. It doesn't pull that hard.

Re: FMJ Pull Strap experiences
I have had the FMJ for several months now. I had some problems with the latch and seal. These problems were quickly rectified by Pace. Their customer service and support is excellent.
The spring mechanism works well and consistently The finished look is the best of all the covers in my opinion. The pull strap has a tendency to get in the way when loading long or bulky items. I seem to be able to snag it often. The velcro side attachment is less than effective. When I forget to attach the strap with the tonneau open it is very distracting as flops around in the wind. I think the "perfect" tonneau has yet to be created. Hope this helps Gary P |

Re: FMJ Pull Strap experiences
Thanks for the replies. It's gettin to be a tougher choice than it should..
The pullstrap sounds like a small issue, but I'm wondering whether you always need to use it to open or close the cover? Can you grab the latch and easily open and close it but walking down the side of the truck, or do you always need to reach for the pullstrap (in the middle of the truck no less) and close it that way? Anyother comments on the ease of opening and closing the FMJ would be welcome... thanks, Peter Dk |

Re: FMJ Pull Strap experiences
I am 5'8" tall. It can be a difficult to reach the pull handle from outside the box. I can't do it without pressing up against the truck box. The latching of the cover in various positions relies on the pull strap to lock it in position. Mine has been a little sticky so it may work without the pull strap. I have a replacement latch from Pace that I have yet to install due to a surgery and other more pressing issues. I hope to get it done this weekend and could report back to you. You may want to call Pace directly and ask about the mechanism. I'll have a look at my install manual this weekend to see if it mentions if the pull strap has a mechanical function beyond closing the tonneau.

Re: FMJ Pull Strap experiences
I have had my FMJ installed for about 2 months now and initially had a problem with the rear seal. When it was installed at the factory, they cut it too short on both ends. Pace Edwards were great to deal with and sent me out a new seal right away. I installed it and problem fixed.
The strap, as shipped, is way too long and as others have said gets in the way and flops around in the wind if you leave the cover open. I cut mine down so that when the cover is in the full open position there is just a little slack in it. It works fine now and doesn't get in the way and I can reach it fine. I felt that this cover was the best for me and I liked the looks over the other covers, but again like others have said there is no perfect cover. Good luck in your selection!

Re: FMJ Pull Strap experiences
I really don't think you can go wrong with either the PE-FMJ or the Retrax. After researching LOTS of bed covers for weeks, my decision came down to these two covers. I finally decided on the Retrax. I just felt it had more to offer, and for less money. BUT, I also think I would be singing the praises of the FMJ if I'd bought one. Good luck with your decision. And let us know what you decide!
