Battery Charger Advice

I needed a new battery charger, mostly for use on a 12 volt deep cycle battery (AGM type, like an Optima), but also to use for car batteries when necessary. I was at Walmart and picked up the Shumacher 1200A on an impulse, but then when I got home, I looked at reviews online and it seems that a lot of people are not happy with it. I also noticed that the price on Amazon is half of what I paid at Walmart!

Anyway, I need a "smart charger" that can be used on gel cell, AGM, wet cell, deep cycle and cranking batteries. I guess "smart chargers" can be left on the battery constantly because they charge fully and then go into a maintenance mode to keep the battery charged without damaging it.

Any recommendations? Thanks.

Battery Tender!
(Although cheaper on other websites, this is the homepage)

Agreed - I have used a batterytender+ for several years on my mustang when I put her up for the winter and she always cranks right up come spring.

Be aware, this is not a "fast charging" charger - it will charge a dead battery if you have a few hours, but it is a trickle charger, mainly meant for maintenance if your vehicle is sitting for extended periods.

Re: Battery Charger Advice

I have the equivalent of this Schumacher charger, but an older model. It is automatic and charges either deep cycle or regular batteries. I have had it for several years and have had no problems with it. I have three deep cycle batteries to maintain.

Re: Battery Charger Advice

You're wise to look at the reviews on Amazon. I use those reviews for many of the things I buy, whether I get them from Amazon or not. I'd sure trust that, and search for a charger that has better reviews. And even if you decide to get the charger you have, I'd still return it to Wal-Mart and buy it from Amazon. BTW, I've also heard great reviews on the Battery Tender. Wise choice.
