Re: Retrax and Pop and Lock - good price
Pop & Lock is supposed to be sending me a lock for evaluation purposes prior to announcing a Group Buy for ROC members. I've yet to receive it.

Re: Retrax and Pop and Lock - good price
Congrats on getting your new Retrax. Yes, that's a great price with everything you got included. Let us know how your installation goes. There's a couple of good threads to review if you have any questions about putting it on:

Re: Retrax and Pop and Lock - good price
Wise shopping, Diane! You got a great deal on your Retrax, gasket and lock. Be sure to let us know when you get your Retrax installed. Also, please let us know how you like the Pop 'n Lock.
BTW, the Retrax is not very hard to install. The First Lady and I did it in about 2 hours. Could have been done much faster, but I took lots of time to read the instructions carefully, since I hadn't installed anything like that before. The only time you need two people is when you're lifting the cannister and attached rails up to the bed. And that's easy with two people. The Retrax is a great cover, and I know you'll enjoy it. A couple of things I'd recommend when you get the Retrax installed.... 1. Lubricate the inside of the rails. Candle wax (any old candle) works well, and others have used 303 Protectant, silicone, etc. This will keep the cover sliding smoothly as you open and close it. 2. Use wax/polish on the cover, just as you would any other surface of the truck. A good coat of wax will keep it protected. Good luck! Tom

Re: Retrax and Pop and Lock - good price
Well, today is my birthday and I woke up to a CLEAN truck thanks to my husband - and he installed the Retrax this afternoon. He did it in about an hour. Looks great - but one of the screws would not thread properly and will not work. I went to the hardware store and they don't sell square nuts anymore! He said not many sell them anymore so I will have to call the company on Monday and get another sent. (I got a smaller nut but it was too small and won't work either)
When I asked the Retrax guy for the gasket he said it was included BUT I think he was talking about one in the package. Should I get the $25 gasket and install? Still waiting for the Pop & Lock.... |

Re: Retrax and Pop and Lock - good price
Diane, you may not need the tailgate gasket....IF you don't drive in dusty conditions. I think the gasket does a good job of keeping dust and dirt out of the bed, but that may not be an issue for you. Just comes down to your choice. I seldom ever drive on dusty roads, but I went ahead and got the tailgate gasket. To me, it was worth the $23 just to keep any amount of dirt/dust out of the bed. You may want to try the Retrax for a while to see if you need the gasket. You can add it at any time if you decide you want it.
BTW, if you do decide to get the gasket, be sure to check out the post on the ROC for installing it. It's a bit tricky to get it to adhere to the indentions on the sides of the bed. No big deal, just something you have to watch carefully when installing the gasket.

Re: Retrax and Pop and Lock - good price
The tailgate gasket won't do a thing for water leakage in your RL. It just keeps the dust out of your bed. The cover (Retrax or any other cover) creates a bit of a vacuum that sucks dust into the bed. The tailgate gasket prevents this. Or at least minimizes it.
To help with water leakage, be SURE you read the instructions for your Retrax....the part about sliding the rail side gaskets nice and tight over to the sides of the bed. That will help a lot with water leakage in the bed. The drain tubes can help with this, too. BUT, I didn't install the drain tubes, and I've had VERY little water leakage in the bed, even when spraying the hose full-force on the cover when washing the truck.

Re: Retrax and Pop and Lock - good price
I received the Pop N Lock and my husband just installed it. It took about an hour and he's putting the tailgate back together now.
One thing he did say was that the handle bolts couldn't fit with the new mechanism so he moved them over to the existing locking mechanism and those bolts fit fine on the handle. Also the bracket which connects from the lock to the locking mechanism (last bracket installed) is shown upside-down in the diagram. It is installed with finish side is up. It seems to work fine. I guess we'll see....
