Cool Retrax installed today...a few questions...

I had the retrax installed today. I bought it from a local dealer and they installed it. I didn't want to deal with the hassle of installation even though everything I read in the posts indicated it would be easy. I watched the guy do it and it took him only 20 minutes to install it so it is in fact easy to do. I don't regret paying a little extra for the install because he said he will stand by the product as long as long as I own my Ridgeline and will take care of any problems I may have.

Ok, I have a few questions now about the retrax that I really could not get a clear answer from reading all the threads posted by everyone.

1) I poured water all over the retrax and water was POURING through corners where the cannister lays ...right at the location of the 2 top/front tie down cleats. I guess its because there is the indentation of hole inwards. How do I cure this problem? Should I pump it with silicone? And is there a particular kind/brand of silicone caulk I should buy?

2) A little water was still seaping at mid part of the rail and I read that I should apply a little silicone bead. Should I use clear or black silicone?

3) Can I go through a normal car wash with the retrax completely rolled out? I am getting differing answers and I am completely confused what to do.

I am happy with the way the retrax looks, but I am little concerned about how much water is getting in. I appreciate all the help in advance.

From memory, some foam should have been applied to the bracket on which the cannister rests. That may seal the water leak. With the rail leak, the sides are slightly convex so the gap in the middle needs to be closed up, so try pushing the rubber seal against the bed sides. I usually go through the touchless wash with the cover rolled out. I never intend to go through a contact washer. With the car wash, expect a lot of water to get in under the cover as the pressure just drives the water between the rails and the cover.

Re: Retrax installed today...a few questions...

I installed my Retrax myself. The hardest part was opening the boxes, and then assembling the cover from the shipping setup. Actually installing it was indeed easy.

The Retrax instructions tell you to push the rubber rail cap up agaist the RL bed sides, very firmly. And to push the front side rubber gasket up against the cab as well.

I did that, then ran a bead of silicone caulk all around the sides if the bed and along the back of the cab. However, I didn't manage to get the tip of the caulking gun under the front bedhooks properly. So O'm going to have to do that again.

I know this, because when I go through the carwash, a little water does indeed leak in at those points only. So I'll probably wait for a warmer day, get in the bed, and check for light leaks to make sure I get all the possible leaks sealed. I bought GE black silicone caulk because it matched the Retrax cover so well.

Re: Retrax installed today...a few questions...

Thanks to both of you for the replies. I took it back and the guy had indeed forgot to the put the foam in...he did so but it still didn't stop the water from coming in. I am going to buy the silicone caulk and run it around the corners and sides.

There was an ice storm today in Chicago area and my retrax froze and wouldnt open

I bought it last October, so I don't recall the exact amount, but including shipping it was right around $800

Cool Re: Retrax installed today...a few questions...

My nephew and I installed our's(Truckin' took pictures) I sealed all around with black sealant. It's still not completely water tight, I go through car washes all the time. No problem! Make sure you put the seal around the tail gate cause it creates a vacuum, and will suck dust through all the cracks. It's the best cover on the market bar none. Good luck!
