: Leather on Steering wheel delaminating
FL_Ridge 10-03-2006, 10:53 AM On Sunday I noticed that the leather on my Steering Wheel is delaminating.
The top coat of the leather is coming off in a few spots. I've never seen this happen before.
Anyone else seeing this?
This is not normal wear for a truck with low miles and only 8 months old.
ShootinDownTheStars 10-03-2006, 03:26 PM do you use hand lotion? People that use hand lotion a lot, it comes off your hands and sticks to the wheel and will make it look as though the leather is delaminating. A good leather cleaner will solve the problem.
bliss53 10-03-2006, 05:13 PM I had the same thing in my ridge. It happened at the spot where I grip the wheel with my right hand all the time. I believed it was a wear item (I have 53,000 miles) but my dealer paid for the install and I paid for the wheel. It probably could have been covered under warranty if I pushed it.

This happened to me where I grip the wheel. It started happening around 10,000 miles. I thought it was just me because my hands sweat when I hold the wheel.

Good thought but no. :) I'm not a lotion wearer.
In one area it's wearing where I don't even hold the wheel so I'm confident it has nothing to do with me.
Glad this isn't an isolated incident. I will definitely bring this in for replacement.

I started noticing this about a month ago in the 12 o'clock position. I occasionally put my right hand there, with the left along the side, though not very often.
I really like the leather feel though.
rwolsen@cox.net 10-08-2006, 09:16 AM It's happening to me too, in the 12 oclock position. I never, ever, hold the wheel there.
Honda, take notice.

Don't you think this may have something to do with where you live? Intense desert sun, top of the steering wheel. I'd suggest some leather cleaner followed by a good leather conditioner but be careful, your wheel may get a little slippery. I have 16k on my Ridgeline. My lone complaint with the steering wheel leather is that it gets shiny between cleanings.
baddog 11-01-2006, 03:01 PM Mine did too. Started at 14k miles at the 12 o'clock position. Took the dealer two trys to get one that didn't do that.
xesmajew 08-28-2007, 11:00 AM I have 17K on mine and it is at at the 12 oclock position that I never hold the wheel at. I do not clean it nor do I use lotion. They are replacing it tomorrow.
PorcupineCuddler 09-18-2007, 10:18 PM Mine did too, dealer replaced it under warranty.
bigdogrod 09-19-2007, 08:25 PM same thing has happened to me, i'm like the "alien", i have acid for sweat! lol
i bought a steering wheel cover the second day i had the truck
good luck with your wheel, hopefully the dealer will replace it (i wonder if the wood wheel from the mdx would fit)

smroycro 09-19-2007, 10:52 PM Mine is wearing out at 12 o'clock. My next trip to the dealer is coming up (oil at 20%). I have a small list of warranty projects/TSBs for them to work on. The steering wheel will be on the list.
PorcupineCuddler 09-20-2007, 06:27 PM The new wheel I received looks like a different material, it looks more rubbery but handles just fine.

Mine is also looking bad. Leather is peeling off on top of the steering wheel. I thought it was burned by the sun.

djeaux 09-25-2007, 07:07 PM I have seen this on a couple of Crown Vics in the motor pool at work, so it's not a Ridgeline specific issue. Or a Honda specific issue. Same deal: 12 o'clock position. I assume it is exposure to the sun.
