Anyone got any pics to share of hunting/fishing?

Here is a 24" brookie I got - big old male. Hope one day to get a reproduction of him - He was released unharmed and hopefully still doing good.

Thannks, Black RTL. It was great fun catching that lake trout and it was the largest I have ever caught by far. However, the world record for lake trout is 72 lb. Hard to imagine landing one like that.

To answer your question, Pam, check the Utah (http://www.hotspotfishing.com/records/records-Utah.asp) state record fish for northern pike and lake trout. They are just much more plentiful in Canada. The world record lake trout did come from Great Bear Lake in the NW Territoies but the world record norhern pike was caught in Germany.

My daughters first fishing trip with her new "NEMO" rod/reel.

Didn't catch anything but a few weeds and a lot of bites.

Didn't matter, had a great day.

True that. Here is a couple of days with my two boys. Was my youngers first trout and you couldn't wipe that smile off with a 2X4.

This from opening day for Chukar in the high dessert of So Cal, October 2006. It is 4X4 only where we were, I didn't see another Honda all day. The Ridge did great in the sand and rocks, it just goes where you point it.

I posted this picture a little earlier this year but I guess it wouldn't hurt to see it again.

Estimated Weight: 40 lbs.+
We had a 40 lb scale which bottomed out on this fish.

Length: approximately 47 inches.

10 ft. surf pole with 75 lb test. The lake I fish is on private property and is loaded with huge cats. There is a rumored 70 lb fish in the lake but I have never seen it. I did see numerous 15 pounders though. Mine was the biggest of the night.

How about a rainbow coaxed from the icy waters of the Madison River in Montana in March?
Used the Ridge in nasty weather with confidence.

Later in September, the Ridge performed perfectly towing the driftboat to the South Fork of the Snake in Idaho.

When I saw your picture I wasn't quite sure if what angle to look at it until I figured it was hanging from the rafters. Holy CRAP that thing is big!! The bicycles in the background give a better perspective as to how big that thing is. We don't have moose in this part of the country so seeing something that is that crazy big is new to me. I haven't seen a moose in the wild since my last trip to Yellowstone. I couldn't imagine hitting something like that with a car. It must do serious damage.

OK, I gotta ask. How do you get something that big out of the woods? Did you have to use the RL to pull it out?

I hope your friend of a friend realizes that his northern would be a state record in every state in the US of A except for Minnesota and shatters the Canadian record of 38 lbs for the biggest Northern ever caught north of the border according to this webpage.

Dude, you still need to tell me where in NY you hunt. I live in Texas but was born and raised in the Finger Lakes region and have hunting land there. I go up to hunt every year and in fact, I leave tomorrow. NY has rifle in the northern counties but the southern tier is mostly shotgun slug only. There are a few exceptions in the southern tier but most counties do not allow rifle hunting. Also, NY is not buck only this year or any other year that I can recall. Even us out of staters can get doe permits. Again, this goes county by county so you may be hunting in an area that does not have a doe take.

Yep, it is exciting! And as you said, a big part of it is having a get together with my buddies. The land I have is in partnership with a friend and my brother. We bought it about 15 years ago and have a little trailer on it with a nice deck over looking the Crystal Valley. That's what i'm talking about. We're in a similar situation with our property. My father and a friend bought it back in the early 80's and we have been restoring the house itself for years. After this hunting season, we're having logsiding put on, all the windows replaced etc. I believe we own 400 acres or so. Good luck to you guys this year. I'm hoping to take my first buck this year. So far, nothing but doe for me.

This whitetail was taken in Northern Idaho during the late buck hunt this year. The log cabin in the background was built by my great grandfather in the early 1900's shortly after the land was homesteaded. We are fortunate enough to still have 3-quarter sections of the original homestead in the family. It was amazing that I could 1/4er out two deer and fit them in the truck trunk for the ride home. If you have not taken your Ridgeline off road yet and are wondering how it will do, I drove through some fairly steep and sticky mud roads that have not seen any rock or gravel in a few years, if at all, and did just fine. In general for the primitive logging roads that I took it on and the occasional off road turn-a-rounds at the dead ends it did just fine. BYW, it dents and shows brush scratches just like any other rig.

Well to answer your question. This guy was near a mile deep into the woods. The four-wheeler was not powerful enough to drag him and we didn’t want to quarter him out. We did the next best thing. The four-wheeler has a winch and we winched him 300 ft at a time.

That is HUGE!!! My God! We don't have anything like that in my part of Texas and where I am now, hunting in upstate NY. I hit one Saturday but it stopped bleeding and lost it - damn! A buddy got a nice 8 point today but that deer in the last picture post was unreal.

And listen OUTFITTER, you can't take anyone hunting until you take me!!! I still can't find a decent place for reasonable money although like I said last year, I've been looking mostly at East Texas stuff. A buddy from NY went to a ranch a couple hours east of Midland and shot a buck, doe, javellina and turkey but paid $3000! No way do I want to do that but Texas hunts are darn high dollar anymore.

where i hunt in catskill, NY, there are no doe permits, so it's buck only in this zone. Now i've hunted this property for over 10yrs. now and I've never heard so many shots on opening day in my life. Furthermore, there's just not a lotta bucks in the area to be had. Leads me to believe there was a whole lotta poaching going on around the neighboring lands. i really hope that wasn't the case b/c i hate to see stuff like that.

Ok, my deer hunting story. Sorry no pictures. :D

I went deer hunting every season for 15 years with my late husband to Ohio/PA State Line Road. Andy ( my late husband ) never left the woods without one before dawn all the years we were married. He use to chock it up to being a smoker. He said the smoke attracted them to him. After one year in the woods, I found another thing. ME.
I really didn't plan to kill a deer/Bambi and never did but I never told Andy that. I just enjoyed being in the woods with him as it was the only time he was sober. Anyway, this one season, I neglected to go to the bathroom before we went into the woods as I usually did in years past. We got into the woods about 5 a.m. and began our wait. We always went to the same spot. As years went by, we stopped pushing and sat while the boys pushed for us. ( perks of getting older ) By 5:45 a.m. we hadn't seen anything yet and I had to pee so bad my teeth were floating. So I asked Andy to hold my gun while I walked about 50 feet to the only tree in the vicinity and began to disrobe the carhardt's, sweatpants and long underwear.
( NO, I DID NOT HAVE PINK ON. lol :D ) This process took a few minutes. As I began to assume the position, wouldn't you know it, 3 Doe and a Buck appeared. Andy and I saw them at the same time. We looked at each other and panicked. I was in mid stream and with Andy holding both loaded guns and no where to lay them down we were, as they say, screwed. By the time I dressed enough not to be standing half naked in the woods and take my gun from Andy, they were flyin' white tails.
Luckily, Andy got his deer so I didn't feel so bad. We laughed about that for many years.

Good story LadyRidge. In fact, that is a GREAT story!! I'm sure the memories you had with Andy in the woods all those years will be with you forever. A friend tells of a time when he was in a tree stand near dawn and saw someone in orange walking down the trail. About 50 yards from his stand she lowers her drawers and does her thing. He did not know what to do as it was sort of sudden. Well, she continues on her way down the path and never saw him in the tree stand back in the woods just off that trail. To this day she has no idea she was "captured" on openning day!

Andy and I saw them at the same time. ahahah that reminds me of a story my father told me this past weekend that i never heard. Long story short, pops took my older brother deer hunting when he was 9. My brother proceeded to fall asleep...FACE DOWN in the dirt and 25 mins later a buck crossed his path which is rare on our land...and my father couldn't take the open shot b/c my brother was too close. I'm convinced my father will never live that one down. I'm looking forward to the weekend. Even if i don't take anything, it's still fun getting together at the hunting cabin with the guys

So true shortspark, BIG bucks ($) for Big Bucks has become the norm in much of Texas since cattle won't pay the bills for the land owners anymore.
We are very fortunate with our place, year round lease, 2000 acres at a reasonable amount. Been there for 7 years and are really seeing the benefits of our conservation and game management efforts.

Yep, thats why I do most of my hunting here in NY State. I visit my brother, mother and family every Thanksgiving and we own some hunting land with a little trailer on it. I missed two this morning but I should not have taken the shot anyway - they were running dead out. Yesterday one guy I was hunting with got a real nice 8 pointer; just no luck for me - yet!!

I'm not a hunter, but I support it. I own 80 acres in a fairly remote area -- remote enough that it was an underground nuclear test site in the '60s -- and have family access to an adjoining 120 acres. Because I can't get up there as often as I'd like, I've granted a gratis hunting lease to a guy who lives nearby. (He & his family were close friends of my grand-dad.) In the 2004-2005 blackpowder season, he took several white tails (one 8-point) & he's been great about keeping the trails clear, gates up & food plots maintained.

Of course, last year was a wash for hunting, since the downed timber made it impossible to drive more than 20-30 yards into the place. Last winter, we had the salvage loggers in to clean up the storm debris. My forester estimated my loss at over $75K. I netted six grand on the salvage.

http://www.djeaux.com/images/katrina/gopher_ranch_salvage_2006-01-28/DCP_0118_RESIZE.JPG

That used to be a dense stand of 35 year old longleaf pine... <sigh> Bigtime turkey habitat, too. Once upon a time.

Last spring, some jerk set the front 20 acres on fire, burned down an old shack & basically cleaned up the logger's mess. It's growing back up, but that's mostly gum, youpon & other trash species. I'll probably pay most of what I netted on salvage for a controlled burn next spring. <double sigh>

Well, finally got a deer this morning. A nice doe came close to the tree stand and I saw nothing behind it. A couple minutes after I shot and was ready to leave the stand, I saw a nice buck heading out away from me. No doubt he had been following that doe. If I had only waited!

Congrats shortspark, does eat mighty fine.
It is still slow at the feeders here, as most activity is still happening at night according to the pictures on our game cams. One of our guys did get a Yote this past weekend that was stalking a group of 3 does.
We are going to have to get serious about thinning the preditors out during the off season. Way to many Yotes, Bobcats and Grey Foxes.

Well another unsuccessful hunt for me this weekend but at least i got the ridgeline extremely muddy. My dad did take a mutant spike on saturday morning which was nice. It must've snapped off an antler earlier in the season b/c it had one spike about 6" long and one about 2.5" long. I'm hoping to come across the 8pt buck that's been running around the property this weekend.

well the rifle season in NY was a dismal one at best. Yesterday was the last day and up until that point, i hadn't seen a single deer in the woods in over 50hrs put in. Finally yesterday as I was getting ready to head back to the house, i kicked up 4 does' then decided to hold tight for another 20 mins. Sure enough, out comes the most gaggly looking retarded 8pt buck i've ever seen . The things tines were all over the damn place and it looked like a "special deer' to say the least. Unfortunately for me, he never presented a shot and will live for another year. Oh well, i head to virginia for some real trophy buck hunting in 2 weeks. A nice pitstop at cabelas in PA on the way, and i should hopefully be posting pics of some real nice bucks soon.

Hi shortspark,
I think we may need to do a meet & hunt meat.:D Ridgedoc, MikeT and you. Check you calender for late January (27-28th). Things should be settled down a bit from deer season and maybe the piggies will be moving during daylight hours again.
Your right about the deer, we have not seen near as many this year, not sure if its from the pigs or predation.
Speaking of 243's, my wife shot a huge gobbler this weekend with hers. She made a great head shot at 95 yards. 11 inch beard with 1 1/4 inch spurs. Made some excellent Sour Cream Wild Turkey Enchilladas last night.:D

We are not real big on hunting them in the fall and sniping at them with a rifle, she knows to only take a head shot so as not to mess up the meat, you either miss cleanly or get lucky with some mighty fine table fare.

Thanks so much. I still can't get over how long the season is down there. They extended doe tags until Feb. I also can't believe how many bucks are down there, as well as a HUGE doe population. people were literally begging us to hunt their land b/c they're so sick of deer everywhere. Too much land, so little time to hunt. I must've seen 100 deer while i was down there but 99% of them weren't presenting a good shot. I'm not one for taking superlong or iffy shots. If it's not gonna drop it on the spot, i usually won't risk it.

(I hope these pics turn out!). Outfitter was kind enough to invite MikeT and I to go on a hog hunt this past Saturday on his Texas hunting lease. We are silver Ridgeline owners and it was neat seeing them all lined up together on the street in front of his beautiful house.

I got to Outfitter's house about 8:30am after driving close to three hours from East Texas. He invited a buddy of his to come along just in case we got something as we were told he is an expert with the butcher knife.

We headed out to the lease which was about a two hour drive or so into some pretty awesome country. The RL made it through ditches and mud without a hitch although I parked mine before the going really got tough. Outfitter drove us all back to the camp area in his RL and it made it with little problem. As we toured the place, both ATVs were taxed to the limit in a couple of spots - that tells you something about the terrain there. It is really beautiful country with all kinds of game animals and critters. Besides hogs we saw deer and bobcat during the trip.

While driving around we saw a group of hogs feeding and Mike jumped off the ATV pretty fast but could not get a shot off before they scampered away. Later, Outfitter made us burgers and then showed us to our stands. I heard a shot fairly early on and several more later. We stayed there until dark and although Mike and I did not see any hogs from our stands, Outfitter shot a nice sow and Mix, his friend, shot a smaller one. We loaded them and hung them up where Mix showed us his stuff. The guy had them skinned and cut up in no time flat! Heck, if it were me I would still be there working on those things. I have my meat soaking and it will be ready to cook in a couple days. Outfitter promises his recipe he gave me is a real winner!

Of course it was pretty late when all was said and done when we left. They had a couple more hours drive back home but I would have had to drive for three hours past that. So, I spent the night at a hotel and glad I did - I crashed! These guys were all young fellows while I'll be 60 next year so I was the old man in the group and it had already been a long day for me.

It was a great trip, good weather, beautiful country, lots of game and of course, great guys one and all. Thanks again Outfitter, lets do it again sometime! (Now if I can get this pics to load).

Closer to 600 yards and the sow was running about 30 mph in a 20 mph cross wind. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.;) :D
You really do meet some great people with Ridgelines and both shortspark and MikeT are some of the best. They were a pleasure to share camp with and they can spin yarns with the best of them. I need to do a better job next time of picking stands for them or maybe the hogs could just turn in their itineraries ahead of time, that would sure help me.

Here are a couple pics from Saturday morning at "Base Camp" (home) before the run. I should have taken some pics of my Ridgeline Sunday morning before the $15.00 in quarters got it presentable again. It was big time sloppy out at camp and poor shortspark got his immaculate RL a bit dirty. We all can look forward to some more cleaning tips now that he knows what really dirty is.:D
From left to right, MikeT, shortspark and the fine specimen on the end is me. :)

So i haven't been on here in a while so I thought i'd update you guys. Last week, I got back from my hunting expedition in mexico. The site with all info is oaww.com

I highly recommend this place but it is quite expensive. Luckily my boss picked up the tab for all 8 of us which i can imagine ran him close to 40k. I'll have to find some pics from the trip but basically we hunted dove, geese, all types of ducks including redhead and pintails in the gulf of mexico, and teal duck at some other place. Also hunted quail which was a blast although to be honest, the dogs weren't the greatest pointers i've seen. I think the best part was after each hunt, you got back to the lodge and a guy was waiting to open the door and give you a frozen margarita.

Your being modest Outfitter, I KNOW that the range had to be closer to 900 yards and the wind was at LEAST 35 to 40mph :D I never knew a sling and rock could do so much damage from so far away

Everyone out there needs to know how hospitable and fun to be around everyone was. Outfitter, you cook some good burgers (You can tell from the photos that I know good food when I get it). Also, if anyone is around Mix and a dead animal waiting to be skinned and quartered, you'd better watch you fingers as Mix can move with a knife! Shortspark, you were a please to talk to and I wish I had more time to hear about your adventures in the great white north. Let's try to something like this again guys, I had a blast :D

Weather has not been helping us this turkey season but it has not slowed down our hog problem. Last Saturday night this one got a dose of lead posioning from about 15 yards when he chased a group of turkeys away from a feeder I was watching. 270 pounds, 3 1/2" cutters and mean as all get out.
He had no intentions of running.......and neither did I.

deem0nessa, I’m really sorry for not seeing your question. I use both recurve and compound for this. I use manual spools on both. I don’t like the whisker biscuit because it interferes with the arrow flight too much. I shoot NFAA indoors and the biscuit just doesn’t do it for me. They are great for hunting but not for shooting dimes at 20 yards.:)

Thanks OZ, but be careful what you wish for. We said the same thing 5 years ago when we never saw a hog. Now we are over run with them and they are very destructful of the property and of our feeders.
The latest figures from the Texas Parks and Wildlife: 1 breeding pair of hogs in year one can be responsible for over 5,000 hogs after 5 years assuming 6 surviving piglets per litter with 1/2 males and 1/2 females.
Also, of the estimated 4 million wild hogs in the USA, Texas is supposed to have over half of them.:(

Wow, those numbers are staggering. Have you survived the latests storms that moved through Texas? My sister up in Kansas had a norrow brush just the other day.

I have had a couple of close calls, opening weekend of Turkey season I had a lot of fun getting into camp right after a 4" downpour went through.
The second weekend I got to watch a funnel cloud just south of the Interstate on my way out of town, and 2 weeks ago I just missed the huge hail storm that went just to the north of me.
I have spent most of my sons inheritance at the quarter car washes over the last month. My neighbors banned me from washing the Ridgeline in my drive after they saw how much mud was going down the alley. :(
The Ridgeline has done a great job in all the mud, but I did almost loose one of the ATV's down the creek. Bad decision on my part.:o
Did I tell you, Honda ATV's don't float?
Glad your sister came through OK.
Come on down for the May 5th hog hunt with MikeT and shortspark and I.

Nope, it was not as large as we get around there either. We skin em out within minutes and get them cooling out as soon as possible. At the end or our 4-5 season we usually are cutting up 9-14 deer and 1-2 domestic hogs we cut up so put in with the ground meat.

We have a large industrial grinder and bag it all up, tenderize the steaks and loins. Usually a 8-10 hour day. Usually everyone goes home with 40-60 lbs or so of meat, that is usually 8-9 people splits the meat too.

Fox spinners floating down well after dark - I could hear the fish working but could not see her.
Took about 10 minutes before she finally took the fly. Had to fish by sound - set the hook when you think the fly is close and you hear the take.
Quick fight even for the Sage 389 LL and Lamson real.
The net is 20 1/2 inches long.
She released quick so I had to take the picture quick.

When I go fishing, I don't care if they're biting or not. In fact sometimes, I would be happy without a hook on the line. Just want to relax on the water and not be bothered with a strike.

I think it's spelled "Forrest." And I've captured shrimp that are so large less than ten of them make a pound and they are still termed "shrimp." I suppose the Yankee name could be "prawn." That makes more sense. Also, I'm sure you can sell "prawns" for more than a "shrimp."

I heard today and saw a article on the web http://www.comcast.net/news/index.jsp?cat=GENERAL&fn=/2007/06/01/678677.html&cvqh=itn_monsterpig that the monster pig was a tame pet up to 4 days before the killing. Pretty sad thing, a pet sold to a hunting farm and I imagine it wasn't too hard of a stalk. Pure slaughter.

It's a Swamp Ghost Game Cam using a Sony digital camera. Made by a fellow in LA. I got fed up with having problems with Stealthcams and Cuddebacks.
Much simpler to use and better pictures too.

The remote idea has already been done and it got banned in TX this year.

The clincher for me though was a testimonial on another forum where a guy had one of these in a creek bottom that got flooded and the camera was covered by about 3 foot of water. It kept taking pictures the whole time of debris floating by and when the waters receded the guy got the camera and not a drop of water had entered the case and the camera continued to work perfectly. Now if the camera would have captured a fish underwater, then that would have been really something.

I didn't try a Bushnell game cam but their new ONIX 400 GPS is just too cool and could save my marriage. You can download satellite photos and overlay them on the GPS along with a compass and way points in current time. Surely my wife wouldn't get lost all the time when she rides around on her ATV. I bought one of the new "Expert No Flash" models and when I got it home and opened up and found out how poorly they designed the battery compartment (batteries fall out when opening up the outer compartment) I took it back to Cabelas. From some of the reviews I read, everyone loved the older model (3000?).

Questions..... I like your front mount rack..where can I buy one? How did you install it? I also like your roof rack for the poles? where'd you get it?

hurricanejoe
09-23-2007, 06:02 PM
The roof mount came from "Onion River Racks" it's a Thule fishing rod holder. The front mount was a custom job done by "Willie's Welding" it goes through the steel bumper, and works really well. If you don't want to do that you can check out a front bumper mount that screws to the bumper through the license plate holes. Only thing it will not hold a cooler, only four rods max. but it's an option at least.

auroraprospector
09-23-2007, 06:09 PM
When you say Willie's Welding, is it possible for you to tell me or show us some close up/high res images of the setup? I'm interested.

Thanks again for all the info.

hurricanejoe
09-23-2007, 06:40 PM
The best I can do is try to tell you how it was done: We took off the front "clip" the plastic piece that holds the grill and covers the bumper. Then we removed the front bumper. The steel bumper. The welder located the exact center, top to bottom and left to right and cut a hole through it. Then he welded a 2" reciever tube to the front and rear of the bumper. He then braced it on the back with a piece of angle iron about a foot long. This piece went just over the top of the reciever tube on the back side of the bumper. The bumper is pointed or arched at the center. This piece just added some strenth to the unit. Then he added some flat steel to the tube that the bumper fits in, to add a little strenth to that too. Next he measured a lot and finally cut a square hole in that plastic clip. Once that was done we put everything back together and there you have it. I ment to take some photos, but when I started "helping" it just didn't happen. It took him only about 2 hours to do and cost $200 bucks. I really like it, but it is a lot of work to do. I thought about that liscens plate mount quite a bit before I went this route, but for me I'm happy with this set up because this was just what I wanted from the start. Just for anyone that's interested I'm including a photo of that license plate mount. I think it's called the surfcaster.
Also if you'd like I could take some close up shots of the set up I have, but without taking off the front clip. If I ever take that off again I will take some photos and post them.
