Mobile06 10-25-2006, 01:52 PM Anyone here know off hand whether this Pioneer sub would fit in the factory sub box.

I believe the factory sub is 8". The Pioneer sub that you provided the link for only appears to come in 10" & 12".
Mobile06 10-25-2006, 02:43 PM Yeah I just realized that. This is a link to the 8"
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069929_297969765,00.html
They even make a small enclosure for it
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069931_308664739,00.html
But I just found another forum about this sub and no info was really given there.

Oh..I must have missed it when I checked earlier. I just pulled the factory sub out of my ridge the other day. I'll crack it open and check the depth for you. I think I remember someone else posting pictures and dimensions somewhere on here. Try doing a search for "factory sub".
Actually that pioneer sub box probably will fit under the back seat. You have about 9" of floor space before the floor starts to angle up. The height clearance is about 9" in the front and 8.5 or so in the back.
csimo 10-25-2006, 02:55 PM It doesn't really matter. Even if it fit there isn't enough power to drive it. All you would accomplish is diminished bass unless you could get more power to the driver.... you need an amp.
If you're going to add an amp you might as well put a better driver and enclosure than the stock.
Bottom line... you need an amp, bass driver, and enclosure to do any good.
jayg287 10-25-2006, 02:59 PM Here is the link to the pioneer box dimensions. It looks like it will fit.

I agree. You would be better off utilizing the space where the factory sub is for an amp then just put a single driver under the seat in which case you won't be limited to a low profile sub.
I bought that sub in a 12" version. I know that it will not fit in the factory box and I would not want to even if it could because it would be too small of volume. There is an 8" version of that saucer sub made by Premier (Pioneers upper line for car audio) that maybe could be made to fit, but the box would need some reinforcement somehow. It would need to be sealed well and probably lined with dynamat to deaden it. And maybe filled with Polyfil to mximize its potential in the small volume.
As soon as I get finished laying my $@!&% wood floors I will be starting on this project. I plan to fiberglass it in to make the box as shallow and utilize as much space as possible. It will be my first attempt at fiberglass so I am sure it will be interesting....
hofffam 10-26-2006, 08:48 PM The subject of using the factory box with another driver has been discussed many times here. I suggest it is not worth the effort. The factory box is a two-part plastic molding designed specifically for the factory 8 inch driver. The box is a vented system, tuned to that driver. To use it with another driver requires:
1. adapting the mounting recess/surface for another driver
2. sealing the cabinet since you CANNOT take a vented system designed for a specific driver and get it to work well with another (even one vastly better).
3. once you seal that box (not super easy) - you will need to reinforce it because that plastic box will expand and contract with the sub excursions since the box is not stiff.
Lot of trouble to go through with little certainty of improvement (my opinion).
I like the specs/design of those Pioneer drivers. I think making an entirely new box to fit the factory location would be an interesting project.
TheRidgester 10-26-2006, 09:11 PM We have the pioneer 12" in a pilot ... with an amp... we were shocked at how much it cranks for a little sucker:) Even my teen gave it a thumbs up to his rap music...
