: LOUD metallic thunking noise!

Made a low speed right turn off a street into a parking lot late this afternoon, and in the middle of the turn heard what sounded like something metallic being thrown into the bed (my first impression), followed by more metallic thunking and clunking as I pulled into the parking lot. I got out and looked for something in the bed -- nothing. Checked the trunk to see if something was loose -- nothing.

When I left the parking lot a bit later, the metallic thunking and clunking got louder with every turn and bump. I called my friendly dealer and asked if I could bring it in ASAP. On the way to the dealer I stopped twice and got out and looked under the truck, as it began to sound as if something was loose and banging against the bottom rear of the truck. Again, I saw nothing, but then, I didn't really know what to look for.

About five minutes from the dealer, the noise abruptly stopped.

I left the truck with the dealer, where they'll check it in the morning and let me know what they find. I'm kinda worried, but hoping it'll be something simple and obvious.

I don't suppose this sounds familiar to anyone? I read a lot of the "clunking" threads/messages, but none of those problems sounded similar to this noise....

Try searching on tie rods or swaybars.

Not to scare you but sounds like a diffy (differential) problem to me. Turning corners usually produces a very light and barely inaudible noise on all locking differentials. The fact that yours is louder can only mean mechanical trouble.

BTW, you just posted your 666'th thread. YIKES!!! Halloween is tommorrow!!

Hey UT..I had the same thing happen a few months back. It sounded "tinny" like to me and after a few days it got worse. At higher speeds it was worse. This went on for almost a week and then all of a sudden it stoppped. I haven't heard it since. I took it to a friend who put it up in the air a few days later and he found NOTHING!!!
I thought maybe it was a heat shield. Nope.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Just got a call from the dealer -- it's a broken sway bar link on the right side (good call, MikeT). They say these break "all the time" on the Accords, usually on the left side.

They're looking for the part -- if they can't get it today, they say the truck is safe to drive, and will give it back to me until the part arrives. Not so sure about the safe-to-drive part -- don't want to be up on top of the bridge tonight on my way home and have some part (or the whole truck) go spinning off into the bay!

Hopefully they will remove the broken link to stop the noise. The RL will be safe to drive. The link on the other side of the anti-sway bar will hold it in position. The bar will is no longer functioning so you might notice it leaning a little more in the corners if you are pushing it, so don't get into any road races on the way home. :D

Ah, the trinity of man.......

Some Canadian federal government phone numbers start with the prefix of 666. At least here in BC.

If I were to be of a superstitious type, I would answer illogically that if that were the case, the federal government would be somehow involved with the almighty prince of darkness himself!! :p

Mugen1, I know a good priest......

They won't have the part until Friday sometime. I guess they left the broken link on, as it thunked off and on all the way to work. Makes me cringe every time it starts whacking and thunking away. I can't help but wonder what damage it's doing, but knowing nothing about sway bars, I'll just have to trust the dealer. It's still under warranty, so if the broken link does damage, they'll have to fix it. But still....

I'll curtail my racing, but it'll be hard to.... :)

I would double and triple check if leaving a broken whatever doohickey that holds the swaybar is safe and will not cause additional damage. Just my opinion. Now I will move on. Happy Halloween :D

I would have insisted that they remove the broken link. I believe it is next to the exhaust and the trunk, so it may dent or puncture one or the other. Make sure you look up under there before you drive it next. You may be able to push it in a position that it will be out of the way of everything else, or take a socket and remove it.

Thanks for the advice. I will look, but I can't guarantee I'll know what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, my husband isn't able to crawl around on his knees just now. But he can probably tell me what to look for. Or maybe I'll take it back to the dealer and do as you suggest -- insist that they remove it.

My husband was worried, too, about what the sway bar link was whacking around on, so managed to get under the truck tonight (in the rain) and remove it. (Not sure his knee surgeon would want to know about how he got under the truck, but....)

He was rather disgusted to see how wimpy the link is -- he asked me to attach this picture for your amusement (or disgust). He thought some of you might appreciate the comparsion to a 9mm round.

Thicker would make the truck oversteer like a son of a gun.
????? It's the anti-sway bar LINK, not the anti-sway bar itself. The thickness has nothing to do with the handling. Unless it breaks. :D

I had the same experience right after I put on the trailer hitch receiver. he he he.....figured it out a few hours later and wrapped two rows of electrical tape over the receiver to shim it a little....way better now:D
