Nice, pictures...what lens & settings where you using...very clearI am glad that everyone is enjoying them! I highly recommend visiting this zoo, but do it in the spring/summer/fall as there were some exhibits that were closed due to the season, like the Kamoda (sp) dragon.

I wish I could remember what that is, I had to zoom in to "get him" as he was across a lake.

I have an Olypmus C-740 10x optical zoom, 3.2 Meg. It is a straight digital camera that is about 3 years old. It cost me about $240 (online) when I bought it. I picked this camera purposely for it's zoom capability. I find higher pixels worthless if you can't get out to the object.:)

The capybara (also capibara) (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is a semi-aquatic herbivorous animal, the largest of living rodents.

Excellent shots, Keith. Nice timing on the shot of the howler monkey. We have an agouti (named Judy) at our zoo, which is a smaller relative of the capibara. One of our elephant keepers came from the Audubon Zoo. I'm sure she will enjoy seeing the shots of the elephants.

I hold the button and it snaps off a shot every half second or so until the buffer fills, then I have to wait for buffer management. But still, its a great feature for air shows, kids at the plate at little league baseball, etc.

I have more elephant shots if you'd like them. Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you all of the elephant shots!

I loved it so much I bullied my Dad to buy one for himself when he was looking to upgrade his camera. We both agree that now that we have this zoom capability, we wished we had more! hahaah The shot with the zebra was across a lake and I was pissed that I couldn't bring him in more.

.... almost time for an SLR!  HAHAHA

I agree, nice shots. Any problems with vibrations from the shutter or from taking such close ups?

I agree, nice shots. Any problems with vibrations from the shutter or from taking such close ups?None. The thing that it sometimes does is that it will refocus when I don't want it to. Sure I could lock the focus when I get it right, but I usually don't bother.

It is surprising how fast you can rip through 700 photos! Especially when you want a certain look, like the ones with teeth exposed or when the object's high speed is a factor. You need to use the "rapid fire". One out of ~10-14 shots will be perfect, but you don't know that while out there, so DEFINITELY have enough memory cards. I have enough XD cards for about 1000 photos on the photo size I like.

I agree about having enough memory. On my vacation, I gave my daughter a 2GB SD card and 1GB SD card and told her to shot anything and everything. She took 4000 shots!

I agree, nice shots. Any problems with vibrations from the shutter or from taking such close ups?You won't see shutter vibration with a fast shutter speed, or even a real slow shutter speed. I forgot the exact range, but I think around 1s is where you can see shutter vibrations. That's because faster speeds freeze the action and slower speeds doesn't have enough light hitting the sensor before the shutter stops to make an exposure.

.... almost time for an SLR! HAHAHAThat's what I was going to suggest for you needing more reach. Nice Canon DSLR with a 400 or 500 mm zoom lens and there you go. I have a 70 to 300 zoom with image stabilization on mine. Here are a few I took with that particular lens at the Knoxville Zoo.

Keith, I sent your great elephant shots to our keeper, who is visiting her mother in Virginia. She sent back a big Thank You for the photos so I am passing it on to you. Zoo keepers form very strong attachments to the animals they care for, and carry that bond with them even when they move on. She had a very hard time during Katrina feeling helpless and worrying about the animals and people at the Audubon Zoo.
