Audubon Zoo, New Orleans, LA - Python consuming a rabbit (NOT for Squeemish)

Just as I was walking through the Reptile house at the Audubon Zoo, I stopped at the Python enclosure and saw a dead rabbit in there. I asked the "Zoo Lady" who was standing there, what was going on and she said that it was feeding time. The rabbit is dead before they put the body in with the snake. She admitted that they normally feed them after hours, but they were not going to be there on Monday and Tuesday, so they had to feed them.

Please excuse the photo quality as the lighting was poor. I upped the Gamma on the images for decent viewing.

Pretty damn big rabbit...

A few years ago as I pulled into my driveway one summer night, there was a rabbit (no big deal, hundreds around here), but he didn't run as they usually do. My passenger then spotted the rattlesnake next to the rabbit. Looks like we interrupted feeding time! When we approached the rabbit you could see the bite marks.

We didn't kill the snake, but separated the two. We moved the rabbit under a bush. It was gone the next morning....it either recovered or the snake backtracked and got its prey.

Pretty damn big rabbit...Actually the snake was pretty big, but the rabbit was average sized (from the rabbits I have seen)
