Ridge 12-21-2006, 03:14 PM This is Koal. He adopted us, but I must say I kinda wish a cat with more color would have instead. He's one tough kitty to get to show up on film/sensor. He needs to be blasted with sunlight to get any details to show.
What he lacks in being photogenic, he makes up for in personality and dispositon. He's still on probation, but he seems to be doing well over the last month or so. Give him a plastic bag, empty box, red ball and he keeps himself pretty entertained. He's a pretty mellow cat and not vocal at all which is a good thing. He's not very demanding and is very cool when you leave him alone as I imagine most cats are. That's not the case with dogs so much which can be a pain. you'd think the world was coming to an end when you leave some dogs alone.
He's also the only cat I've seen that likes to play fetch. Throw a ball, and he'll bring it right back. Are there any other fetching cats here?

He's beautiful! He looks so sleek.
Our cat, Murray, likes to fetch -- he'll carry the toy around his mouth until he finds someone who will throw it for him. His latest favorite toy? A roll of white medical tape! You just never know with cats!
chisoxjim 12-21-2006, 03:27 PM ridge,
awesome cat,
my youngest cat Jefferson is also very photogenic, when we try to take a picture of the baby or the new house we always discover he has somehow snuck into the picture when reviewing on the digital camera.
enjoy your new friend.

Interesting, I thought this retrieving behavior was just mostly particular to dogs. I'm new to cats but am starting to see the benefits to cat owner ship. He uses the litter box, and it can be cleaned up at our convienence which is pretty cool.
As far as being sleek, I keep telling the wife I want a rolly polly cat. I give him treats and she keeps trying to put him on a diet. I think we're working against each other on that one. Though, I think the cat's on my side of the argument.
We used to have a cat that loved to play fetch with tinfoil balls.
Koal is gorgeous - very regal looking.
chisoxjim 12-21-2006, 03:33 PM ridge,
a couple of things should fill him out, get him neutered, and a few table scraps. Our youngest cat is like a 10# sack of potatoes now..
UglyTruckling 12-21-2006, 03:36 PM You don't want him TOO tubby, though, as then you'll set him (and yourself) up for lots of veterinary work, from diabetes, etc.
His fur is so glossy -- he's really beautiful.
Ridge 12-21-2006, 03:36 PM ridge,

We'll see. He's doing pretty well, but there have been a few times he almost found another home. He loves to attack loafs of bread. Just attack them and not eat them. I think it triggers some kind of predatory intsinct. The bag of bread I think feels soft like dead prey because he'll hold and kick it while biting into it. Poor Nature's Harvest bread didn't stand a chance. I don't think it even saw it coming.
I'm just guessing trying to figure out why he does the things he does.

Good point about the vet bills. As far as glossy fur, it must be the result of lots of cat spit. He spends enough time grooming himself. We also feed him Eukanuba and that might help. I thought cat food was cat food, but after reading the ingrediant list on most cat food bags, I've come to the conclusion most of it is crap in a bag. Alot of brands don't even list any meat until the 4th or 5th ingrediant. Eukanuba list Chicken, chicken liver, chicken byproduct as the first 3 ingrediants. Pretty good stuff.

The foil is a great idea. it sems that the lighter the toy, the better cats like it.
as far as regal looking, I think he looks like the president of some of the better cat universities in the top photo.:D

Yep, he's neutered. That was first on the list. We did it early before he started to mark his territory which was a very good thing for him. He would have failed his probation period for sure with a marking incident on one of our walls.
Also he has two canine teeth on his left side. Is this unusual? Should we just leave it?
Truckin' 12-21-2006, 04:01 PM Ridge, your cat is a lucky boy and a beauty to boot. We also have a black cat that adopted us via the next door neighbor. She came over and said, "Harold, my dad won't let me have another cat." And Harold took him right in. He's a great cat and he still likes to visit next door once in a while.
You're so right about photographing black animals. We have two black cats. Black is not my favorite, but these two just came into our lives and we had to give them a home. Most of the photos I take of them, they look like a silhouette. Light and probably a bit of over exposure is the key. You did great with these two photos.
I'm just guessing trying to figure out why he does the things he does.
You figure that out and you'll be a very rich man, but only if you share your knowledge.
RidgeOwner3 12-21-2006, 04:17 PM Yeah Ridge, he is a very handsome cat!
(Keep posting ;) )
25 Year Honda Owner 12-21-2006, 04:26 PM We had this little stray tortoise shell kitty dropped off about 2 years ago. Turned out to be a great companion. Gets along well with the fuzzy butt Keeshond and plays well by herself. Hell of a mouser. We live in the woods and when she is out we get a collection of chipmunks, voles, field mice, snakes, etc all alive. My wife has made a career out of rescueing chipmunks.:)

Yeah, there were alot of different threads in the off topic section that caught my attention today. I can't explain it.

Thanks, I was thinking of misting him with baby powder just to get him to be visible. I saw that in the Invisible man once and it worked pretty well.
Kellcut 12-21-2006, 06:32 PM Beautiful cat. As far as toys, ours loves ping pong balls. One of ours, Jasmine, will bring toys to us also.
Here are our three cats - Samantha is the black and white one, Jasmine and Lucky are the black ones.

We had a beautiful black cat that passed away several years ago. She was stunning and smart - she was loving and turned many dog lovers we knew into avid cat lovers after babysitting her while we were on vacation. She used to play fetch and bring back the balls - had a particular liking for fetching foil balls. Also, if you opened framage (can't spell it) or kraft crackers and cheese she would be on you before the top was off.
Enjoy your cat, you have a smart one.
We have 3 now, and nobody fetches like she used to, although my grey and white tabby has proven to be just as loving and loyal as our Blackie was. She used to go nuts when my boyfriend went on travel particularly when his car was in the garage. She would cry and annoy me until I followed her into the garage and then she would just look at his car and then run around the house trying to tell me that he should be home because his car was there.
He used to call while on travel and insist I put the cat on the phone and wouldn't rest until he heard her voice and knew she heard his.... amazing love.
I feel the same about my tabby...... and my parrots
Jay Cee 12-22-2006, 04:22 AM Very cool cat. Nothing like the green eyes on those black cats. Beautiful.
pel C 01-16-2007, 09:28 PM The foil is a great idea. it sems that the lighter the toy, the better cats like it.
Sure, we've done the whole "cat toy" bit - the hard little mice with the leather tails, the little stuffed mice, the furry stuffed balls, the plastic balls with bells inside, the springy mounted batting balls, the rubber multi-sided balls, you name it - and what do they like? You know when a (clean) kleenex goes through the washer and dryer, and comes tiny and kind of hard? Yep, that's it. They act like that's the best thing since sliced bread, batting / carrying the kleenex all over the house. And these stupid things will turn up weeks later (no comment on our housekeeping). But it does make for a cheap date!
Foofighter 12-06-2007, 02:34 PM Beautiful cat. Black is the presence of all colors, they say, so a cat with more color would be hard to come by I guess. :D
TexRidge 12-15-2007, 07:19 PM About cats that fetch--our cat "Boogie" not only likes to fetch (and return), he likes to CATCH! Lob a soft object around 2" in diameter at him and he will get up on his rear legs and catch with his front paws. He will do this over and over again. He is a white and black cat marked like a Holstein cow.
TexRidge 12-15-2007, 07:21 PM Foofighter:
Black is the ABSENCE of all colors. WHITE is the presence of all colors. "White" light, for instance, can be separated into primary colors. Just want to get the record straight. :)
