I decided to go cheap. The bed mats and liners I looked at were fairly heavy and none fit right. I would have to do a major cut and paste job to make it come out right. Also, I could see a problem with keeping a liner in the bed all the time as it would be a pain to get in and out of the trunk with a mat laying on top. I could cut it in two pieces I suppose but still a pain. Plus, they wanted nearly a hundred bucks for the ones I looked at.

I was just going to get an old piece of carpet but that too would interfere with getting in the trunk and would not protect the walls at all. So, since I don't use the bed all that often (at least not with too many items that would scratch it), I went with an old, thick quilt I was going to toss out.

I fold it up and secure it with a bungee cord and keep it in the trunk. When I need to line the bed I toss it up and over the sides thereby protecting the entire bed area. I've hauled lawn equipment that way a couple of times with no problems. The lawn clippings and twigs that fall off my machines and lawn mower are just shaken off; no sweeping required and no scratches of any kind.

I have a cheap $12 rubber cargo net I got on ebay to secure anything that is very smooth, such as a table - which is about the only thing that might slide on a (thick) quilt anyway. I would recommend this approach if you only use the bed to haul with once in a while. I would think daily use would require a bed liner of some sort that you lay down and forget about (at least until you need to get into the trunk that is).

If you don't have things like a thick quilt, comforter or old sleeping bag just go to a couple estate sales and you will find them there for sure - and CHEAP!

Okay I took the cheap route. I bought a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet (Lowes $15) and cut it to fit the bed. It doesn't interfere with the trunk at all. It opens just fine without moving the carpet and you don’t have to hold up the trunk panel. I made this because the black bed gets so hot in the sun when the dog’s back there. I’m not really sure why everyone is so worried about scratching the bed. After all, it’s a truck and the bed won't rust. Look at this way. In a hundred years who’s going to care.

I ordered and just installed a mat from truckcustomizers.com. I am not the first with this, I got this info somewhere on the site awhile back. The item number was R4LRV4.3D, made for a 88 and up c/k pickup. $56.68 delivered. I just put it in last night, width fit perfect between 'wheel wells' I cut off 17inches and that fit perfect in trunk bottom, my plan if I need to haul something across tailgate is to put this piece on it, fits here nice also. One small thing, when you cut, snips work well and turn mat around and cut excess off end that will wind up against cab. This makes finished end of mat wind up at tailgate and the ProTecta name come out almost in center of box.

exactly what I did! I also scored the back where the trunk opens...I don't think it did anything though. Otherwise this works great.

I got the Protecta mat too and cut it to fit. Looks good and fits perfectly. Just used a box cutter to slice through the rubber. Took a little while, but with a piece of wood trim as a straight-edge it came out looking fine. It's heavy enough not to go blowing around in the bed and yet light enough so it doesn't mess up the trunk operation. It's easy to just flip it back too for those times when I'm showing off the trunk to newbies!

The other day, at about 8o mph, I noticed the front corner was flipping up in the air on my bed mat. I had a few items in the bed that may have changed the airflow. So be careful, and keep an eye on it if you are doing 80 mph!

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I just placed my order with truckcustomizers.com. $56 is a small price to pay to keep the bed looking good. For those questioning the need to protect your bed, remember that you will need to sell your RL someday. Why not keep the bed looking close to new?

Hey, Maybearidge.....did you plan on putting anything down to keep the mat from coming up again?

Got my Protecta mat this weekend and put it in. Thanks to all for the suggestions! I put it right to use by hauling a bed couch for my sister. Nice not to have to worry about the scratching!

Although I cut the bed mat to size (59 1/2 inches), I am going to trim the excess piece to fit the tail gate. Does anyone know if a bed extender will be affected if I 'glue' the mat on to the inside part of the tailgate? Otherwise, I'll just carry it in the trunk and use it if I put the tailgate down (like I did today).

Thanks.

The Bed Extender may be impacted by the mat because it has a strap and buttons. I am not sure if the strap has the extra length to it to allow it to reach the buttons if you add the mat in between. Of course you could drill the mat for the holes that match up with the extender legs and maybe find some sort of plastic cap that will fit inside the holes. Then when you have the extender out you pull the caps and drop the legs into the holes so that the straps still reach. I have my extender up at the front so I haven't really tried to see how must play there is in the straps, but I would hope not much if any.

I just got the Protecta today. I think it will serve my needs nicely. I tried flipping it back to get into the trunk and it wasn't difficult. I think I may not cut it to fit and leave it long to protect the tailgate. It isn't as thick as other bed mats I've had but the others wouldn't roll up as easily as this one.

Just install a bed mat today by cutting down the stall mat from Farm and Tractor. The mat comes 4' by 7'. By cutting it 59 5/8 inches it fits perfectly with enough left to make a mat for the trunk. The mat itself is 5/8 inch thick and does a great job of protecting the bed. I paid $35.00 for it so it is a great buy.

I ordered the Protecta mat yesterday from TruckCustomizers.com and received it today. It looks like it will work fine except the weight of the mat is keeping the trunk lid from staying open. An earlier poster said that he did not have this problem. I could just flip the mat up before opening the trunk but my wife can hardly reach it to flip it back down. Does anyone know if there is a way to adjust the trunk lid springs to support more weight?

BTW-First Post; Had my RL for four weeks and love it.

I also ordered the Protecta mat from TruckCustomizers.com. Received it 2 days after ordering - pretty amazing customer service from an internet merchant. I cut my Protecta mat to fit the bed, but I use the excess piece on the tailgate when it is down to protect it also (as needed). I think if you are going to use the bed extender a lot, you should probably consider not cutting it at all.:)

tlaudio,
Here is the link to the part number I had mentioned
http://www.truckcustomizers.com/products/-BM-RM-IM/R4LRV4.1.html
It's the "Protecta Heavy Weight" mat listed as $62.30 and doesn't mention trimming being required.
Did you choose to purchase the "Protecta SkidGuard" mat (the link in your post) because it was cheaper and larger so it gave you a piece for the tailgate?

I've owned the Protecta Bed Mat for about a month now, and would recommend it. It is a basic mat the does a great job of protecting the bed, however it is a bit light. I've noticed on windy days at higher speeds, the mat does a bit of dancing, almost loosing it once which scared the s out of me. I was thinking of adding some heavy duty velcro strips on the corners to keep it secure. Go for it, you can't go wrong for the money.

The one in your link appears to be more heavy duty than the one I purchased.

Yes - The "Protecta SkidGuard" requires cutting the length.....which then gives you a small piece for the tailgate.

I only used it when I am going to transport something in the bed.....

Well I went ahead and ordered the "Protecta Heavy Weight" mat I inquired about above. http://www.truckcustomizers.com/products/-BM-RM-IM/R4LRV4.1.html
This is the mat already cut for the RL bed so no trimming was required.
(which means no extra piece for the tailgate/trunk if you wanted it)

At the time of my last post it was listed as $62.30 but now it's $45.06 (all the better)
I installed it and figured I'd share some photos so others can see it.
BTW, I ordered it on Sunday and received it on Wed so as others have mentioned,
their shipping times are pretty quick.

The first three photos show it was cut to the bed pretty well although no mat exists
around the front tie-down. This may have helped hold in in place so I'll just have to wait and see
how it reacts to wind.

The fourth photo shows the thickness of the mat. As you can see it bows in between
the raised areas of the bed. This makes walking on it a little "bumpy".

The final photo shows the interference with the tie-down when opening the trunk.
Although it hits at this point, you can continue to open the trunk while just letting it bend
the mat (minor interference).
The trunk will not stay up on its own although it doesn't appear to make it that much
heavier to open.
All in all, for $45 I'm pleased with it. It will get the job done although as you can tell there
are a couple of areas I would have liked to have seen implemented better.

I got mine from truckcustoms also. They now make one for the RL. It is still long so I cut the extra 17 inches off and put it in my trunk to stop any thing from damaging the floor. I am very happy with it. It cost around $59.00.

NE_Pats_fan

We had the RL out on the highway yesterday and a pretty windy day here in MA. I checked the
location of the mat at each end of the trip and there was no noticable movement in it. I
didn't hear/see any noise/flapping while driving so it seems like it'll be okay.

Directman:
I believe they now offer two mats for the RL, the one I mentioned which is cut to length and trimmed
around the wheel wells, and the one you mentioned which has straight edges and is rectangular (fits
between the wheel wells) and can be cut to length (correct?).
I've only seen one of them so I don't know if any other differences exist (thickness, weight etc?)
It's tough to tell from their site.

Perhaps (for the others here) someone could post pics of the version which has been trimmed?

OK - here is the response from Murdock.

I can give the same discounts that we give the Honda Dealerships that are selling them for us, which would be 20% off and could apply that to the Bed liner or the Complete set... can't do just the trunk mat separately though.

If you want to set up a group buy day which is one day only, I'll let you be in charge of it - Monday the 27th works great for me and gives me time to prepare. It's all up to you now :) Thanks!!!

For those that have the Protecta skid guard mats from truck customizers....

I bought one for myself and Arizona Ridgeliner! (Mike) last year. The size width was about 1/4 inch wider (no longer available). It was snug fit down near the bottom (tail gate).

Well, on our trip to the So. Cal meet last Friday (3/17) mine started to blow around the bed just before we reached Blythe, CA. When we stopped for lunch, it as almost in a 'ball'. I straightened it out and thought nothing of it.
My top speed ws 80 mph (75 is posted in AZ, 70 in CA, so it was just before we got to Blythe, probably at 80 mph).

About an hour or so after resuming our trip, Mike calls me on the cell phone (as he's following me). It took two calls to get in, but bottom line is, he lost his mat (it went airborne). We were doing approximately 70-75 mph (tops) and it does get windy in that part of California. We got off the next exit and decided not to go back and take the loss ($58 was the cost last year, with shipping). Mike said it did not hit any other cars behind him and ended up in the median. I then took mine out for the remainder of the trip. (I wish I could have remembered the exit...someone out there on I-10 CA got themselves a nice bed mat!)

Is anyone using anything to 'secure' the mats to the bed? I was thinking strips of two-way velcro.

I feel bad for Mike and wanted to pass on this information to anyone else that has this mat. I have driven on the interstate at 80+ mph before with no problems. Guess it was just too windy in CA! And I'd hate to be the car behind that flying mat!!

Just an FYI....:(

Okay, I got to go get some rivets but here are a few pics of what I used to hold down my mat.

I used a 1" bit that makes circular cuts (not sure of the type bit) and carribou clips (approx. 2").

It worked well this weekend on the trip to Las Vegas. However, you do hear the mat 'banging' a little bit but at least it did not curl up or blow away! And although I haven't had time to find a 'rivet' to put on for protection from the mat tearing, the mat shows no sign of tears so far.

I put in a Protecta mat this weekend, had to use a universal fit and trim it to fit. It turned out very well, and the clips hooked to the tie-down cleats seem to hold it down just fine at highway speeds.

Has anybody installed the leftover piece onto the tailgate? I'm trying to figure the best way to do it, but keep concluding that just screwing it down with sheet metal screws would be the best. Any takers?

Look back at post #30 of this thread for some photos of a slightly different

Thanks for the bungee cord idea Coz. I keep my mat rolled up behind the cab and was using a heavy board to keep it from blowing away but then I bought a bungee cord and it works perfectly for keeping the rolled up mat secure. :)

Any takers?

I used silicon caulk (bathroom) to hold the mat to the tailgate. No invasive screws, plus it should be removable (with effort and solvent). It's been a month now, in working conditions with rain & KS wind. Seems to work great. Put a piece atop the tailgate too. Oh, the Murdock mat is top quality! Minor cutting around the tie-downs only.

I haven't done it yet but I was thinking I would use 2-sided velcro strips. I haven't done it because I want to get a bed extender first to make sure I don't put the excess piece in the wrong place.

Staples has some SUPER-DUPER, Heavy-Duty, Stick-to-Anything Velcro Strips that may serve your purpose well. I used them to secure some interior molding that had pulled-away from around the headliner and door on an old coupe I had. (the clips were broken and I needed a quick fix)
And I used a few to secure a 25ft hose reel to a brick wall that I didn't want to drill into. These things really stick, and stay stuck! (one of them came away from the brick, but I believe it was because I left that brick wet before applying it. It wasn't totally dry after cleaning when I applied the velcro.)
These strips have some really good adhesive and the "hooks" and "loops" are made to be able to be separated, but not without some real effort!
I was thinking of using them to secure the mat I just got yesterday but it's the "heavy-weight" ProtectaMat, and I found that it doesn't have much chance of getting enuff air under it to lift it.

Instead, I like your spade bit/carabiner idea! :) To secure it against unauthorized removal... theft, that is. If you don't look very closely, the mat seems to blend-in with the bed, but there ARE thieves that DO look closely. I was thinking of incorporating a "loop" and connecting it to the tiedown with a low profile lock of some sort. One corner lock would probably be enuff to dissuade a roaming thief out for some easy-pickin's. Unless he's carryin' snips, and then I don't think he'd be "shopping" for just the mat.

Thanks for the idea, and good luck with yer bed extender. I'd be willing to bet the HD velcro strips would do an excellent job of holding the tailgate protection in place when you have it positioned where you want it, and still allow you to move/adjust/remove it when you'd need to. I'll probably be doing the same when I decide what to use for the tailgate. (I didn't get any "extra" mat with mine").

I have a question about the mat produced by Murdock INC.

1) Does it interfere with the Bed Extender?

2) Can you use the trunk with it?

Not a fan of Murdock - customer service perspective.

Bed mat will cover trunk.

Unsure if it interferes with BE.

I hear high quality etc, but slow in delivery at times. I hear that others are quite happy with the truckcustoms.com item, Protecta – (:

I made this because the black bed gets so hot in the sun when the dog’s back there.
JUST LIKE KIDS "DOGS DO NOT BELONG IN THE BACK OF AN OPEN BED" Sorry if I sound annoyed but I am. I've seen to many dogs fall out of trucks:eek: It's not a real pretty sight. And I feel that anyone who lets there pup do this does'nt care much about there best friend:(

Is anybody using the Bed Extender with any of the bed mats? I read somewhere on the site that it might be a problem just wondering if anybody has both.

BIGGUY is right about not letting your dog ride in the truck bed. I was at the local veterarian hospital last year and the vet told me he was very busy because of all the injured dogs that had been brought in that had bounced out of trucks. He looked furious!

I had great luck twice with Murdock, first time I ordered the trunk liners, second time the bed mat. Order arrived in about 2 days, great quality stuff too. The bed mat does hinder the opening of my trunk, but that probably has more to do with the Retrax rails. If I could open the trunk all the way, the mat may or may not hinder it. I have no problems simply rolling it forward a bit to get into the trunk. Murdock may have come off poorly somewhere on this forum, but I can vouch that they have a good product and shipping times are pretty quick. They have the mats in stock now, pre-produced, so that may have made up for the slow shipping in the past....just my 2 cents.

I second that. I have the murdock mat and had NO problems with customer service or delivery times. I also agree with the comments about the mat with the trunk/retrax.

I do not now have a beef with Murdock. I've gotten over the 3 week delivery time and a customer service problem of several months ago. They were just beginning to produce this mat and had some initial glitches. After nearly 3 months of heavy work use, I can attest to the quality of the product. Yes, the trunk doesn't pop up with the durable but lightweight mat over it, but access isn't really much of a problem. Since I keep tools and work accessories in the trunk, if this was a real problem I wouldn't tolerate it. I also have an open top wood box in the front of the bed for other accessories. This helps keep the mat down at highway speeds and does, to a degree, hinder the opening of the trunk with the mat on it too. In summary, the Murdock product has and is doing what I wanted it to do. I fully appreciate the compromises needed to make the best truck ride ever into a work truck. But for those that don't like anyone using the Ridge as a (shudder) work truck, I say this: I'm old, I own the business (pay for the gas), I travel to job sites, I live in my truck, and I deserve the best damn truck there is. Or so my wife says (she loves the truck too!;) )

I'm using the Protecta bed mat with a bed extender with no problem.
When the extender is behind the cab it does sit up a bit higher .
This bed mat does not cover the tailgate when it is down so there is no interference with the extender
in that position. No protection either :D

I ordered my bed mat from Murdock on 5/10 and it arrived on 5/12. It fit perfectly and flattened out in about 2 hours in the sun.

The springs for the trunk lid barely hold open with the mat on top, the slightest breeze makes it close. I fashioned a prop rod from an old broom stick, painted it black, and I store it on the spare tire shelf.

I think the next accessory I will get is the bed extender. But I am only going to mount it in the front of the bed, as I use the trunk a lot.

I definitely recommend this mat, it keeps things from sliding around and scratching the bed.

I also have the Murdock bed mat. So far so good. The only two drawbacks in the product is the trunk won't open so you have to roll the mat back. And if you do try to lift the trunk up without rolling back the mat, the mat hits the tie downs and won't lift until you smeek the mat by the brackets. I think this problem can be eliminated by cutting slots the rear tabs of the mat. Im not cutting mine but I think Murdock should look into doing this in the future.

I simply used a utility knife to trim about 1/4" off the mat where it goes under the tie downs. It clears them easily now.

I agree about dogs in the bed, but when mine's muddy and/or wet I don't want him in the cab. So, I have a 3' leash attached to a front tie down. Works great. Leash is long enough for him to stand up, but he can't move around much, which makes him decide to ride lying down. For longer trips, I tie down an airline travel box.

What about a sprayed -in liner, ie; Rhino Liner, on top and sides of the bed.

Bought the Elemmat for my RTX and I must say I AM NOT impressed. Way overpriced for what you get. I bought the complete package and spent a tad bit under $300 and now I wish I would have just bought the Protect-a-Mat for $75 shipped. Lesson learned.
