Smiles per Gallon!

I purchased an 07 RTL/NAV a few weeks ago and my first few gas tanks showed around 12mpg average. I read all the threads about mpg and many saying go easy, keep the rpm low and some saying they started getting better gas milage after the first oil change and or up to 30k miles.

my last tank showed 13 mpg, so I kinda was discouraged but saw it was going up. Well one day while drinking a Red Bull, it hit me. (Red Bulls do that!)If I was designing a motor with a modern CAD program and I had machinists who ran the CNC milling machines telling me that I could build a motor with the tightest tolerances, wouldn't I build them tight as possible, maybe too tight?

So I decided if the motor is very tight in design, then break in could take a long time, all the while I am getting terrible gas mileage. In reading about gas mileage in these threads I discovered more about the shift logic in the transmission and I start to consider how the Truck is shifting. With all this information spinning around in my head, the Red Bull logic kicked in!

To heck with waiting and all the babying of this puppy, I will try and see how bad of mileage I can get! So my plan is to take the next two tank fulls and dog it, lead foot, blow it out. Every start that its a safe run, floor it and let it blow out the engine. I have about 900 miles at this point so I have babyed it enough.
One thing I noticed as I was driving this agressive way is my shift points have improved. I am now one with the pedal. I can control the shifting with my foot and drive it like a stick shift ringing out the power and getting really good speed. I have yet to take a trip but in town driving and pushing it every chance I can get. My wife rides with me the other day and she says, whoa why are you driving so hard? I told her I want to see how bad of mileage I can get. I want to see the worst, because 12 and 13 mpg sux! How bad can it get?

Well today, I went to fill up and check my mileage. 15 MPG!!! So I gagged it and flew off into the sunset once again with a full tank of regular planning on seeing how bad of mileage I can get. smiling all the way!

I am getting similar results, the mileage seems to steadily get better. My last tank was almost 100% city, no highway driving and I got just under 15. I just passed 1000 miles, the first two tanks were around 13.5.

I don’t get it... There seems to be a few RL's that are getting such poor gas mileage... I have found at this point that I can make the RL get 17's mpg going to work if I am really vigilant with acceleration points or just not pay attention and knock it down to 15's...

Cyclicpitcher, Take a really long HW trip for 45min to an hour, set your cruse for 70 and see what type of mileage you get. If you don't get at least 19's there has got to be something really wrong.

My first 3 tanks where high 19's...

Last night I thought I would go and air the tires to 35 pounds to add some mileage if possible that way. What I found was the dealer had already set the air pressure on each tire to 35, so I am already set up on that idea.

This weekend I will take a trip up to the missouri boothill, there is a big RV dealer in that area and it will be a nice Saturday to get out and dream. Hopefully its not raining. I am still pushing the truck hard and will continue to keep the rpm up as much as possible.

Cyclicpitcher... Did you do a "cold" tire pressure check.... If you want 35 psi it has to be at 35 after sitting for at least 12 hours. Check it early morning before even driving... Tires will increase 4-6psi after a good drive.

Part of my bad mileage is probably due to:

A. I have the roof rack

B. It's been colder than hell here the last few weeks

C. I have been taking a lot of short trips

If it is still getting 15 mpg in spring and summer, then something is wrong.

Well we drove from Memphis to Sikeston Missouri and it was windy, lots of crosswinds and my average speed was about 71 mph. I burned a tank of gas today and showed 18.3 miles per gallon.

I think it's getting better, I have about 1600 miles on the truck at this point. Around town and driving it hard I am averaging now about 15 mpg.

I like the quick response of the truck. Since I have the Navi, its easy to use the calculator each time I fill up. Today I forgot to reset the trip counter so I will have to skip a tank and check my mileage next round.

I took a 710 mile trip this past weekend & averaged a hair over 20 mpg. Although my actual speeds varied depending on traffic -- and there was about 60 miles of in-town driving involved -- I tried to keep the cruise set between 75-80 mph out on the i-state. I'm very pleased, obviously.

I would put some redbull in the tank if I thought it would help but then the truck would be hooked on Redbull like me! :D

I am continuing to drive the RL hard and today I turned on the air conditioner, The truck runs a little different with the air compressor on, Kinda shifts different and you can tell there is a power loss.

Just finished a 1200 mile trip with my new RTL and got an average of 19.6 mpg. This included highway and in-town driving with some use of the AC. The Ridgeline's crowning achievement hasn't been ecomony. While not bad, it's not great. You're right there probably are trucks out there that are torquier and perhaps more powerful that get equivalent MPG.

The vehicle that my Ridgeline replaced got 13 to 15 mpg on required premium fuel. I saw an instant savings moving to the Ridgeline, not to mention the utility that the Ridgeline offers that my previous "luxury" car didn't offer.

I track each tank of fuel and can see the dramatic difference that traffic conditions play in MPG. I would like to know how some people are averaging those high MPGs. I drive like an old lady most of the time and believe that someone people may be either miscalculating or are simply inflating their numbers.

I give you kudos on your acceptable MPG on your F-150, but that's not a fair comparison. I'm not angry or upset that you get 14-15 MPG, congrats to you. But there are many other pluses of the Ridgeline that offset the lack of economy for an otherwise economy-minded company like Honda.

While no car will be everything to everyone, I would say that the Ridgeline would score a 9 out of 10 for the average American, where on the same basis of judgment a domestic or ordinary pickup would probably get a 6 or 7 out of 10 on the same scale.

I have packed just over 23 gallons of gas into my Ridgeline at two different gas stations and in both instances the fuel light was on for approx 10 to 20 miles.

My point is that somewhere along the line we have some misinformation , either on the pumps calculation or the fuel line and filler neck hold more than 2 gallons.

So , all of our comparisons are not scientific by any means. There is no way that i know of to tell the exact amount of fuel left when you go to fill up , my guess is it could be off by as much as 2 gallons . That could make a couple MPG difference when we figure our mileage.

I have 2000 miles now and have gotten better MPG with each tank ive used.

I am up to 15 city and 20 highway to the best of my knowledge.

If I were you, I would avoid those stations. It sounds like they are short changing you.

My Ridgeline is only a 127 miles old, so I haven't had a chance even to fill up yet, but with my other 3 Hondas, there was always 2 to 3 gallons left when the low fuel light came on. While it wouldn't surprise me if the tank can hold a little more than the stated 22 gallons, I find it hard to believe you can cram in 24 to 25 gallons total.

Well, I am still out here driving the machine hard, dogging it and racing around like a high school punk and I am always getting around 15 mpg. I show oil at 40% and my miles are 3350.

Here's how I calculate my miles per gallon: Fill up and zero out the trip meter. Drive around like a bat out of hell, when I get to a quarter of a tank, I fill up again and on my navi, I bring up the calculator and enter the miles on the trip meter and then divide by the gallons that show on my receipt. That value is your MPG. (I think?)

If you forget to zero out your trip meter, then go back to the gas station and top off the tank and zero again. By using this method you could stop when you get to a half a tank top off and calculate the mpg. When you top off your tank you can hear the sound of the fuel coming up the filler tube and stop on a good even number on the gallons. I pay by credit card and so nowadays I fill by gallons , not by the amount of the purchase.

I want to get my oil changed this week, If I can I am hoping to see an improvement. I admit I am driving the truck hard but I am also disapointed not to see any improvement in the mpg.

One thought is, I have been so eager to check my mileage that I sometimes fuel at a quarter tank. Could be the mileage should be checked after you go almost to empty, because from half tank and up, you are carrying the extra weight of the fuel, if you average your mileage from an empty tank, you get the benefit of the fuel usage on a light truck? I just went over 20,000 miles and for some reason my mileage just got better the last 3-4 fillups. I had been averaging 18 every time since about 2,000 miles. Now it's been getting 19 and even got an all-time high of 22.5 on a trip to Tahoe, (75 mph) highways and mountain driving. I had to ask myself if it was all downhill in both directions!

A while back, a ROCer did an oil analysis around the 20,000 mile mark and the lab said it looked like the engine was still breaking in. Could the mileage get even better?

I don't know if it makes a big difference, but I have been using Mobil 1 5-20 since 14,000 miles, and a Castrol Syntec blend the first oil change at 7,000 miles. (The last few tanks were at the end of the oil life according to the RL computer.)

I would not count on getting 15 mpg in the very beginning. My first tank I got 12.09 mpg, my second I got 14.56 mpg. My driving is all suburban, no highways, lots of short trips. But I still have less than 500 miles on the truck and my driving habits are purposeful to conserve fuel. At least for right now.

I think most people are reporting better gas mileage as the engine breaks in. I hope I can report the same.

But hey welcome to the club. You will love your RL!

My first tank averaged 15 mpg - most of that was freeway rush hour at ~20-30 mph. This is assuming the dealer topped the tank to the same level I did when I filled up. I noticed that my 05 Element got better gas milage after 10K miles (went from 19 to 22). Hopefully, this holds true for the Ridgeline also.

good morning everyone, I posted last week that I was taking my '07 RL on a trip up to Vermont and would like to report that my average gas mileage was 21 mpg. The best mileage was from Buffalo to Albany 24.2 mpg, the worst was from Albany thru the Adirondacks to Vermont, 17.5 mpg. I don't consider this to be to bad for a 4wd truck. This was all at 75 mph. The truck rode and handled great and was extremely comfortable, the beast truck I've owned.

so my third tank is right in line with my previous 2. 18.07 on a 60/40 mix highway/city.

I will be taking a 1000 mile journey(round trip) in the Ridge in two weeks so I will have a good idea what it gets on pure highway driving. I am expecting 21-22 but we will see.

I posted this in another area, but no one replied as having the same experience:

First tank- 60% two lane and the rest around town driving= 16.7 MPG. Second tank- 50% over the mountain pulling a small trailer and golf cart and around town= 16.5 MPG. Third tank 75% interstate= 16.8 MPG Fourth tank 95% interstate= 16 MPG.

Any theories?

Dang! I should have bought a used Ridgeline! I just read the story posted by Honda's chief engineer Gary Flint and he's reporting 22.6 mpg on his Ridge with 20,000 miles on it! (could the hard cover on his make such a difference?) I'm up to 15.3 mpg w/ 1000 miles on my '07 silver RTX ..woo hoo! Much better then the 12 mpg I was getting at first and a trend I hope continues. I really love this car/truck thing and wish I could drive it more but gas is now up to $3.35 a gallon near me (Hemet, Ca.)

I'm SHOCKED!! I just filled for the first time--even topped off. 330 miles, 17.56 gallons. 18.9 mpg? I'm a happy camper. Must be due to very little stop and go and keeping it under 3,000 rpm most of the time. Only got 385 miles on this RTS so it's definitely not broken in :D

Made a little trip through the Smokies earlier this week, 2 fill ups, 19.5 and 20.1 mpg. Lots of mountains, heavy traffic, back roads, and high speed interstate. RL is closing in on 19K miles. :)

Update: Ridge now has 3,000 miles and just returned from a 700 mile roundtrip.... all interstate. 19 MPG on two tanks @ 75 mph. So it is getting better on the highway, and I'm getting 17 around town.

Smiles per gallon... yes indeed.
I posted this a few days ago...
on a "what kinda mileage are you getting?" thread.

I stopped caring about what I pay for gas about 2 years ago.
Long before I had even bought my RL.
I set the gas pump and fill it till it clicks.
I do kinda remember that it didn't always cost $60 to fill it up tho.
That little ATM "ouch" feeling only lasts a few seconds.
About the same amount of time it takes me to get the RL
out of the gas station lot and up to freeway speeds.

My arms and face feel flush as I accellerate and slide 2 lanes left.
In my side view mirror my dog's tongue flaps in the wind.
The sky is blue.
The truck is black.
I am proud to be an american.

I would gladly pay more if someone could get our troops home.

I have been keeping track of my mpg for the entire 22 months of driving. With 16,000 miles I get 19mpg every time. Once in a while I will hit the interstate for a 100 mile trip and bump it up to 20mpg. I have been using synthetic motor oil, not sure how much it helps. Still change it when I get down to 30% oil life left. Using a K&N air filter also.

My first tank in my new 07 RTX came out at 14.16 mpg. The truck had 21 miles on it when purchased, so I don't know if the tank was full or not at that point. Also, I use E-10 due to it being a dime cheaper, and at $2.99 a gallon today, everything helps, but MPG may be a bit less.

Question, where does everyone's fuel light come on? Mine came on at 248 miles of city driving, and with 4.8 gallons left in the tank.

wren .......... my light comes on around 240 to 250 and i usually have 3 to 4 gallons left.

All stop and go driving , top speed of 35 and rpms never above 3000.

I have over 2000 miles on it and have not done any better than 14 mpg in the city , on the one 400 mile roadtrip i took i got about 17 mpg .

Averaging about 15.5 so far. Not that great, but better than my last vehicle. The Houston area is required to us the special formula gas to cut down on smog. I was wondering how this effects MPG.

I will also note that the majority of my driving is to and from work. It is 18 miles to work in which I have to go through one school zone, 6 stop signs and 20 traffic lights.

Here in the flatlands of N.E. Florida my 07 RTX gets a consistant 20.1 mpg. Haven't done the first service yet but will switch to synthetic when the time comes. Only complaint to date is excessive wind noise...

Took my first trip in the Ridgleline RTX this weekend. I had a little over 600 miles on the odometer when I left. I drove to Jacksonville FL and back. I drove my normal driving style, 70-80mph, ac, with as much Cruise Control as I can. Most of the trip was Highway, but there is probably 50miles of secondary roads, each way. I got 20.4 down and 19.9 on the return. Needless to say I am tickled.:D

Not once I hear people mention anything about how much weight are being carry on. I do understand the road condition, speed, city street vs. highway, but not once mention anything about what they have on their truck. Roof rack, sunroof, running board, tool in the trunk, fat wive on the right. Fat in-law in the back. Those weight do contribute to your mpg too you know...:D :D :D

How much air in your tires? I had noticed mine were 30-32 which is too low.
I also waxed the beast trying to squeeze out better mpg. At just under 8,000 miles I seem to consistantly get 17 mpg.

Well I bought my 07 rtl (16K miles on it) 4 weeks ago and very happy with it. I see why everyone love them.

At first I thought I was only going to get 15.6 mpg , but then it went to a whole 16.7 (and that was with babying it) So needless to say, I got pissed, I said if I'm only going to get that mileage, I might as well beat on it.

So I did, I wound it out quite a few times, tried to spin the tires (yeah right! like thats ever going to happen) and all the sudden it started running better, shifting perfectly, and to my suprise 18.4 mpg. Here I'm getting the performace I'm looking for and also the gas mileage...

So today I'm up to 19.5 mpg and driving normally (slightly agressively) (ok, just plain agressive) and nothing but pure smiles.

I just got back from a trip to the NC mountains....carrying a passenger and lots of gear. I got over 21 mpg going to the mountains (uphill, since I love near the coast), and I got 24.7 mpg coming back. And that was with the A/C on and driving 60-70 mph all the way home. And my truck has only 5,800 miles on it so far. I sure can't complain about gas mileage in my Ridge.

I feel a little better after reading some of these...I'm one of those that will look at the gas light and try get a little more out of it. One thing I've noticed, when I go to fill up, I'm only putting about 19 to 19 1/2 gallons in, even after I've been looking at gas light for a little while. So that means I still have at least 2 gallons left in the tank. 320 miles is about all I can go without getting too nervous. Most I've ever gotten out of a tank was an all interstate trip with cruise set at 70 and I went 385, I was running 93 octane. On the way back on the same trip, I put in 89 to see if there was much of a difference and got 340 out of that tank. All the other variables were the same to my knowledge other than the difference in octane.

Only 13,000 miles on the truck, I just installed a KandN filter to hopefully help some (it did in my old truck) and also hopefully it will get a little better mpg as the truck continues to break in.

2007: 17.13 mpg average for the year (8k miles +/-)
2008: 17.29 mpg average for the year (14k miles +/-)

...both years included some towing.

When I tow my sailboat, it really brings the mileage down!
For 2009, I'm breaking down the mileage while towing vs slick.

If you're mileage is below 15 mpg...
A. You need to relax your right foot!
B. You're not calculating your mileage correctly

If you're mileage is above 25 mpg...
See "B." above!

Putting higher octane fuel in your Honda is a waste of money.
These engines were engineered to run on low octane fuel.

There is only one way to appreciably improve your mileage...
Everything else is minuscule in comparison...
We all know what it is...

...your right foot.:D
