You've come to the right place. You'll find lots of info here including a checklist to aid you with your purchase. You'll also find a large number of very knowlegable individuals here who have over a years real-world experience with the Ridgeline. There's alot more knowlege here than you'll find at any dealership. So enjoy searching and looking around and asking questions.

Thanks for your service to this great country!!!

Does the factory Tonneau cover lock the rear tailgate when closed?

Funny you should ask that...the answer is yes, uh...no...sometimes...maybe...

I had to have the little lock cylinder replaced, got a new one no problem (under warranty) but the dam part was over $100.00 - hate to think about it when I start having to buy parts for this thing...
anyway - yes it will lock if everything works as it should - about 20% of the time. When it does lock, a good wiggle of the tg will cause it to pop open, so it WILL lock ...sometimes.....but can open pretty easily.

Did you have the cover installed by the dealer? I installed the cover myself and sometimes have a little difficulty getting it to lock (maybe 5% of the time) But once it is locked it stays that way with no problems.

I had cover and lock installed by dealer and have not had any problem. I'm not saying I'll store anything back there I can't afford to lose, though. The lock is not that massive, and I'm sure someone who really worked at the tail gate could get it to open. Safest thing to do ... put it in the bed trunk! That is a marvelous storage place for most items, and it is much more secure.

Our new OEM Tonneau cover (Dealer installed) appears to lock properly and prevents me from opening the tailgate to the down position but no hint of a lock for the swing action. Am I missing something? I did crawl inside and looked at the allignment with my wife locking the cover, all looks ok. I will be taking it in tomorrow anyway but I wanted to ask you folks incase its just something I am doing wrong. :o (New truck, new member.....)

I have a question about the OEM tonneau cover. Can the cover be folding open completely for use of the entire bed? All the pictures I have seen only show the cover opened half way.

First post. Love this web site.

The front section is bolted on. Some have used the hitch spring clips in place of the bolts, to be able to remove the entire cover.

RRIDER,

Thanks for the reply. After my post, I found the thread explaining all about using a spring pin to hold the front part of the cover. I should have realized this site would have had that info on it already.

Am considering one, but am worried about still using the bed for hauling stuff. A couple of questions for you OEM Tonneau cover owners:

How easy can you remove the cover and still use the bed for hauling things?

From what I've read, I guess you still have to cover stored items with a tarp as the cover is not completely waterproof (am used to this from my old roll-top cover on my Ford). Is this true?

Does the locking mechanism interfere with loading stuff on the tailgate when it is down and would it get beat up if you did load stuff on the tailgate?

Thanks for any comments...

For unmodified bed cover, it is as easy as revoving 4 10mm screws. Some people, actually, replaced the screws with either hitch type springs or quick release pins, which make it even easier to remove the cover. Properly installed cover leaks very little, mostly in the middle of both sides, so if you store your items in the middle, they should be pretty safe. Of course, additional covering is even better. Locking mechanism should not interfere with loading stuff on the tailgate as the tailgate lutch can be completly folded away.

I have another question about the OEM tonneau cover. Does the trunk lid open fully with the OEM cover installed? Also, does anyone know where the least expensive place on the internet to order the cover would be? Appreciate any information. Thanks.

The in-bed trunk lid wil not open fully with the back part of the cover closed. Say you wanted to put in a average sized gym bag or a few grocery bags, lap top computer ect. in the trunk you would not have to fold over the back part of the OEM cover. But say you wanted to put your large fishing cooler down in the trunk you would then have to flip the back part of the cover open to get the cooler down into the trunk.

I love my OEM cover. I have hadd it for nearly 18 months now. It does lock securely and prevents the tailgate from being opened in either direction. When I say securely, it locks as securely as any camper shell. I could get into it in two seconds with a prybar. It is nearly weatherproof. It does leak a little, and lets dust in when on dirt roads, but no different than a traditional truck topper. I removed mine for the first time a few weeks ago to make a trip to the dump and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was. If one plans on removing it often, I would recommend installing the hitch pins so you don't need any tools to remove it. The trunk will open nearly all the way with the rear half of the cover folded back. It has held up in the weather (snow and sun) very well and hasn't faded at all.
Good luck.

Howdy gang.

Just installed the OEM tonneau yesterday (along with a few other bits).

I DO like it very much - did the 'hitch pin' mod and it is good.

I did add my own modification which is immensely helpful (IMHO):

---Note: I do not have a camera so I cannot post a photo of this, sorry---

I added two black aluminum handles to the underside of the front panel. These handles are towards the back end of the front panel. The location was chosen by approaching the folded panel while it was resting (still in the factory box) on the front-most edge and leaning against a wall to determine where the ideal lifting points should be.

With the handles it is VERY easy to lift the folded tonneau, bring it to the truck, lift it into the bed then (once my body entered the bed as well) lift it into place.

Removal is very easy as well. Having a good handgrip is essential when moving awkward items. This seems to work well. And I suppose that these handles could easily be used to hang the tonneau on hooks.

The ACE Hardware part # is: 5293501 with a upc of: 82901 13965.

Hey Leo Farnsworth, what size hitch pin did you use for your MOD?

Hey Leo Farnsworth, what size hitch pin did you use for your MOD?

Used the 3/16" size. Found 1/4" but they were too large to slide through the holes.

I haven’t noticed any shifting, and I do not expect to, either. The tonneau can't shift from side to side, it can't really go forward or backward while the tailgate is closed. The clips seem to be very tight so I do not expect the tonneau shift up-and-down either.

I firmly believe that the clips are a great mod.

Try it, you'll like it!

Was looking for some more information for a coworker who recently purchased and had the dealer install the OEM cover.

Has anyone found a way to keep it from leaking? She is having difficulty with the dealership since it leaks somewhat and they did not tell her that before she purchased it. If they would have then she could have made a decision wether or not she wanted a leaky cover. Yes they have repalced it, and say that it is installed correctly, but that it will leak. They have offered to refund her the price with return of the cover but has a problem with that as it will leave holes in the bed of the truck. Is there an inexpensive fix for the leaks?

All help would be appreciative as always.

Thanks,

I have made a few mods to decrease water drips with my tonneau.

First, I used black silicone and applied a bead along the top of all three rails (front and both sides). I also added a bit of silicone to the joints where the side rails meet the front rail.

Once this was done the majority of drips seemed to come from the joint where the tonneau hinges meet the side rails.

I crawled into the bed and looked at this joint - it appears that water can drip down the side of the tonneau and not get diverted to the internal drip rails. After a trip to ACE Hardware I now owned some 3/3" x 3/4" Super Firm Sponge Tape (part # 57630) - This is a 10' roll of black foam with an adhesive edge.

I cut this foam into 2) 3" strips 3/4" wide on one side tapering to about 1/4" on the outer edge. I attached these 'wedges' to the far edges of my tonneau with the 1/4" edge extending OVER the internal drip rail.

The concept is for water to penetrate this joint (like usual) then run downhill on the upper surface of this new foam wedge, then drip onto the internal drip rail.

Overall, it has been helpful with the right side leaking hardly at all, and the left side leaking less than before but improvement can still be made.

I will continue to work on this, but it's too cold outside for tape to stick so I will work on an improved version in the spring.

Hope this helps somewhat.
