June 9th may be better for me but June 2nd is do-able too...

Do I smell a Ridgeline caravan past all them fansy mansions? Could make for a cool photo op.

Come on ROCers, throw in some input on dates and then we can round out some cool things to do pre and post beer tour...

Any date but, May 26th for me. Too close to Memorial day. If RI traffic is anything like the NJ Shore traffic, then before Memorial day would be the best.

I agree the 26th probably would not be good, but early June should not be bad, there will be some traffic, but it should be not too bad at that point. Now of course this means that the day we pick, there will be something going on which will beef up the traffic, but I really think it should be manageable.

I just voted for May 19th as agree that the closer we get to Memorial Day the crazier the weekend traffic will become. Newport is a favorite of ours and we haven't been there for several years so this would be a blast! Heck, I think that I've even got a Brick Alley baseball cap around somewhere that I could wear for the occasion. :)

Any other metro NY/NJ/CT ROCers out there who'd be interested in a ROC caravan up the coast on a fine Saturday morning this Spring?

Brich, is May 19th an absolute no go? It would not be the same without you, but that one is leading right now. It is early though.

Nothing is ever a no go... My wife's due date is May 14 so I'd really be pushing my luck if I told her I was going to a meet on the 19th... We'll see though. :D

Just checked both Expedia.com and Hotels.com and there's not much in the way of hotel rooms available for Saturday night, May 19th (only 2 and one of them, Newport Spa & Whirlpool Suites, gets some pretty bad reviews as it's apparently under renovation). However, Lanier's Bed & Breakfast Guide (link below) shows 22 B&Bs in the area and some of the ones that I checked do have availability that weekend.

This may help (for those interested in spending the night in Newport) - just checked Expedia.com again and there's more hotel choices for Saturday, June 2nd PLUS the rates are a bit lower ($199 versus $226 at the 3-star Inn At Newport Beach).

Ah, crap - so much for multitasking. I put in the wrong date and now I can't undo. I want the 2nd but put in for the 9th. Newport Film Festival is the 9th.:o

WOW! Massive amounts of chowdah is enough to make me change my vote too! If it were possible to change both my vote and barmstrong's that would give us 4 votes (out of 7) for June 2nd and put it at 57%. Is there anyway we can modify these votes?

Oh boy! CHOWDA!!! I'm in!! I'm a sucker for clamcakes and chowda! I voted for May, but I can do any of them. I've been trying to make it to the last couple of local meets, and for one reason, or another, I couldn't make it. (Oh yeah, one meet was on my wedding day!) But I will do everything that I can to be there for this one! Keep me posted!

Oh and we might as well get the chowder flavor debate going.

New England (White)
Manhattan (Red
Rhode Island (Clear)As much as it bothers me with the Yankee connection and all, I am a fan of Manhattan style chowder.

Didn't think the chowda show would be such a good find.:D Now as I check with my wife I have a few questions in regards to who thinks they are going.
Is anyone bringing family? I have two little girls and my wife is a wedding photographer and is off to take pix on that day.
Has anyone put this thread into a pm to others in the general vicinity? I know when I got together in Colchester CT one of the guys doesn't have a lot of time to check through the threads. If not I could probably help with it, I just don't want to duplicate efforts.

T-shirts - depends on the design for me. One idea is to have a graphic of a Ridgeline in Newport.
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t232/tba99/tshirtidea.jpg

Chowder: New England White - Tough to make a good Rhode Island without grit.:)

Enough for now. Heck if I can't work this out with kids I may not even make it.

jforget1, Interested in coming, but what date have you set this for??? Some say May19, some June 2nd or the 9th. Let me know a firm date and I maybe able to recruit some people from the Altoona PA meet on May 5th to join as well. Looks like getting some rooms will be the hard part. Will have to book real soon to try and hold the dates.

I think June 2nd is now the leading candidate, seems to have the largest number who can attend, no date will be perfect. I think some of the people who said 5/19 could also do 6/2 and there were a couple people who could only do the June date. The poll is kind of off at this point.

Try keeping a running list in your first post of the thread. Just edit each time someone says they can make it and this way all can see who's planning on going. I'll also ping a few of the regulars as well as some of the newer members up my way. Nothing makes a meet more enjoyable than a large turnout.... :D

I'm gonna say yes to 5/19. Work is moving me out of New England, but I don't think it will be before then.

As for the chowder, red and clear are poor modifications to the original. White cream base New England is the only REAL chowder. (sorry, I know RL owners are senistive to the whole is it REAL thing!)

That’s ok I really appreciate the offer, but you see it’s not the same as getting all dressed in camo and loading up with bug dope to keep the black flies from crawling up your nose and biting you in every possible place imaginable. Besides that the Newport police may not appreciate someone dressed like Rambo running around the neighborhood.

Private Tour and Tasting
We give private tours and tastings to groups larger than ten people. It is a great choice for corporate outings, club social events, or groups of friends. These must be scheduled at least a week in advance and are subject to brewery personel availabilty. The more warning you give us, the more likely we are to be able to accomodate you. These can be scheduled for weekends but not for Friday afternoons or evenings. Nobody under 21 is admited to our brewery at this time. Mandatory $5.00 per head gets each visitor a Newport Storm pint glass.

Along with a brewery tour we could get everybody out to Brenton Point. Could be a good spot to hang out. Maybe pack your lunches, tailgate and grill a bit... Good photo ops... Meet up there and after lunch, cruise to the brewery... Just ideas here. :D

Brenton Point State Park
Located off Ocean Avenue at Brenton Point, this state park has lots to offer. During World War II, it was considered a strategic location for the defense of the mouth of Narragansett Bay. The area is frequently used by students to observe the many tidal pools, plants, and animals that live along the rocky shoreline. There is a one-mile walking path along the oceanfront, complete with nature study information displays. Fishing for tautog, mussels, and lobsters is also popular along the shore. There is a large, open, grassy area ideal for picnicking and flying kites. Plenty of free parking is available.
• Handicap access, picnic tables/benches, toilets, trash receptacles

YES! We'd definitely be interested in a couple of event t-shirts (preferably gray or black as white ones seem to attract every food stain within 50 feet!). 1 XL and 1 L.

If anyone who's coming from the metro NY area is interested in forming up a "Ridgeline convoy" up to Newport that morning please drop a note here or PM me and we'll agree on a mutually convenient place to meet up that morning (perhaps somewhere in southern CT just north of NY?). I'm in Westchester County about 35 miles north of Manhattan and plan to drive across I-287 then up I-95 and/or Route 1.

btw, realize that there's a scarcity of hotel/motel rooms in Newport that weekend; however, it's because many of them don't allow bookings for a single night. If you expand your search and book for two nights (either Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday you'll find an expanded selection).

There's also some B&Bs in the area that still have rooms available:

I have the shirts almost done, want to get the order in by the end of next week. To go with the black shirt with the white text, will need to get 12 ordered, otherwise we can do a smaller order and do digital printing, but that only works with lighter shirts. I will need people to drop me a check or I can do PayPal as this order will be close to $200 and that is a lot to float up front. The shirts should run $15 each, but that is if we get 12, will be a little more if the qty is lower. Will get the final numbers soon.

Two suggestions: first, try to get their sizes from current garments rather than asking your better half (she's liable to think you love your truck more than your kids  ) and second, get them at least one size larger than they're wearing now (kids love oversized shirts and, hopefully, they'll get to wear them next summer as well).

Well we are now at 13 so we will be able to go with the better screen printing technique. The shirts are going to be $14 a piece, thought about doing a front and back but that would bump them to $20 and I know some people have 2 or 3 to order, don't want to tap much into the beer money here. :D SO the final will be a black heavyweight tee with white logo for $14. No definite itinerary as yet but the general thought is to meet up at Brenton Point State Park in Newport, have a cookout/lunch, take some group photos and then head over to the brewery for our tour. Lodging is up to you and there's not much available in the way of hotels unless you're willing to stay two nights (Fri/Sat or Sat/Sun) but there's a bunch of bed & breakfast inns in the area and some of them still have rooms available (sorry, we got the last room at the Black Duck Inn) that you can check out here:

http://www.lanierbb.com/search/search.php?type=bb&q=Newport%2C+RI&x=14&y=14

If you're interested in meeting up somewhere mutually convenient on Saturday morning to "convoy" up to Newport drop me an email or PM. We're in Westchester County about 15 miles north of the Tappan Zee Bridge and it would be fun to have anyone from the metro NY area drive up as a group.

New England ROC Meet - Newport Style

May 19, 2007 in Beautiful Newport, Rhode Island

9/10am -12pm Meet and Greet at Brenton Point
• Handicap access, picnic tables/benches, toilets, trash receptacles
http://www.riparks.com/BRENTON.HTM

12pm - 2pm Picnic lunch at Brenton Point State Park
Bring your own grub.
Sandwichs to hibachis to mini gas grills, we have THE ultimate tailgating vehicle here so let's enjoy a tailgate lunch at the park...

2pm Head to Newport Storm Brewery (This time subject to change. Joe will have a better idea what time we can take the tour)

Post Brewery Tour

Activities after the brewery tour are up to those remaining in the area...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Accomodations are up to those looking to stay in the area. Local options appear to be limited. You may want to investigate options outside of the Newport area.

- Meet T-Shirts are available for pre-order from jforget1 and must also be prepaid.
The shirts are going to be $14 a piece. They will be a black heavyweight tee with white logo for $14. Should look pretty cool.
Deadline to order shirts will be Friday, April 20th (Joe may be somewhat flexible here. Check with him)
If you can do PayPal, that is quickest: PayPal ID is jforget@cox.net

Snail mail for a check:
PM Joe for information (jforget1)
Please note the ROC username on the check or in the comments for PayPal.

One last note. Organizing meets can be a lot of work. To make these meets do-able, it's often best to make them low overhead and leave a lot of the extras, such as accomodations and late day events up to those who want and need these things. Hope everyone understands.

Looking forward to meeting new ROCers and of course seeing those whom I've met at meets past!!!

Wanted to let everyone know, that I did a shirt order for another event from the same company, the shirt finished production in 7 days, shipped out on Friday and it is actually out for delivery today. So the turn around for these is quick. I will let you know what the quality is once I get them.

Get your orders in and send me a payment as soon as possible. Thanks to all who have already sent in their payment.

The park has a "few" grills that are nonmoveable. For the kids there is lots of room to run and play, but no swings, slides or merry-go-rounds ect. It's great for fling kites and there is a Look out tower to climb (40 ft. or so). If you have a gill I recomend you bring it.

Also, as far a lunch goes, I am assuming that everyone is on their own, correct?! We are not all pitching in and doing like a "potlike" type of barbecue, correct?!
One other thing, if I can make a suggestion to Joe, I think a post should be put up about the middle of the week of the run reminding everyone of where to meet and at what time.
See all you fellow RL's real soon!

btw, my whitie is automatically disqualified from this competition. besides, other than my 5SDude door sills & white wheels, none of my mods really count as "custom" and what I had in mind here was something that shows some creativity and attention to detail and makes their RL truly individual.

From their posted photos it appears that the folks who met this past weekend at Horseshoe Curve in Central PA had 15 Ridgelines in attendance and the 3rd Annual Sedona, AZ meet looks to have had an even dozen. So, if we could amass 16 we might just have a new record!

Sandwichs to hibachis to mini gas grills, we have THE ultimate tailgating vehicle here so let's enjoy a tailgate lunch at the park...

2pm Head to Newport Storm Brewery (This time subject to change. Joe will have a better idea what time we can take the tour)

The quote below is from another thread I started to lure more Nor'easters to join us but it's a very valid and relevant question so I decided to paste it here.
MoosePond, Has anyone talked with the state park to see if they will set an area aside for us to park the trucks together. I don't know how much room there is for parking, but it may be worth asking the question. State Parks don't usually do anything but you never know with 16 trucks rolling in.
Has anyone checked this out with the folks at Brenton Point?

I believe it is just an open park type area, I do not think there is an actual check in, but I will see what I can find out.

I would agree - plus we're still pretty early in the "season" so I'd think it might not be all that crowded yet.

Hey Northeasters. I'm officially a Dad again. 1:01am this morning my wife delivered a 7lb 9oz bundle of joy. Mom and baby are fine and Dad managed to stay on his feet for the entire performance. :p

I've had 2 hours sleep since Tuesday morning at 5am and I'm not sure when I'll be able to come down off my high. Anyway, baby makes three. That's all the Ridge can accomodate so I'm done...:D

Still planning on being at the meet. But now I know I won't miss the birth to be there...

Little girl. Named her Emma. Her two "big" brothers were not very excited about the thought of a sister but now that she is here, they are uncontrollable. :D 20986

Best regards and congratulations to you and your wife, Brich. It's a wonderful thing. Emma is a beautiful name.

I was just telling the wife that we need a new G-baby, preferably a girl. Now, which one of my daughters can I convince?

Uncontrolable, or unconsolable?

For anyone who's thinking of joining us and is looking for lodging, the Courtyard by Marriott in Middletown (about 3.5 miles north of Newport) is showing rooms available at $215 plus there are quite a few Bed & Breakfast inns around the area and several of them show availability (don't bother checking the Black Duck Inn as yours truly got the last room there several weeks ago):

No problems, its just a parking lot with a fantastic view. Bring kites if you've got them, there's just about always wind.

I made a run out to Brenton Point Park today about 12:30 pm. Every parking place was taken, all BBQ pits were in use. Looks like we should get there as early as possible. I have been trying to find out who to talk to about reserving a group of parking spaces, but have had no luck.
