I'm not sure if this is the right section for it, but I was thinking of getting pet insurance for my 2 dogs. I mean, $60/month for at least the monitary peace of mind as far as vet care for my dogs don't seem too bad. I just wanted to see the pros and cons and other concerns with having pet insurance. The company I'm looking at is VPI.

My wife and I have three scottish terriers. Our oldest two are too old to get it, but for our youngest, it would have run $35 per month. What we did was set up a savings account and arrange an automatic transfer of the $35 into it each month. That way, if we need it, we have it. And if we don't need it, we still have it.

I did it years ago for my little baby. Mine was through the Vet at a Petco and was $20/month which covered all vaccinations and yearly checkups plus discounts on other things. It was good at the time as the vaccinations for him as a puppy would have cost me as much as 2 years worth of coverage.
The discounts on other services didn't add up to much when near the end of his life his medications were over $150/month with the discounts throught that vet or $40/month through 1800petmeds.com. I don't think I would do it again if I go another dog. Prices have gone up a lot on those plans quite a bit.
I had a policy for my dog and then thought I'm wasting my money...hopefully. So my wife suggested we start up a GIC or some short term account. Like previously mentioned, hopefully we get to keep the money...maybe a boom box, naw.
However when considering pet insurance one to consider is the whether you will cash in or not, does the breed of dog or cat have any innate problems, if so I'd get it. A buddy has an Israely Canaan and has cashed in big as his dog is prone to sickness, so it was a wise choice for him, sorry I meant lucky choice. If the animal is hardy as seen in its parents then maybe open up a trust fund for it...
