how well does your son ride? others will chime in about the other brands of bmx style or mtb style bikes and the type of riding your son will be doing in his near future. Like freeriding, competition racing or even move straight to mtb freeriding or all together stunt jumping style.
I too am looking into getting a bike, but more into moutain biking. The brands that i'm or i've looked into are Specialized, Kona, Trek, & GT. All these brands do have bmx bikes geared for performance, strong light frames, and advance reaserch in biking competition. The prices on these brands roughly starts @ $450 to $8000 and higher. "like they said, its better to have the right equipment than trying to tighten a screw with a shovel"
Go to your nearest Local bike shop and have your son measured, and have him ride a few bikes before you settle.

Kanji, Thanks for the reply. We did go to the bike shop and picked up a Mongoose brand. Most of the riding we will doing is street, dirt trails maybe he will do some stunts.

Thanks

My first 'real' BMX bike was a Mongoose Supergoose! That was somewhere around 30 years ago. :)
Then it progressed to Haros for Freestyle, and CWs for Racing. I had one of the original Haro Freestylers - wish I still had it-they were very rare.

A good choice. I used to have mongoose menace. There are a lot of great brands these days. My personal favorite rider happens to be Dave Mirra, and Ryan Nyquist. Haro makes really nice bikes, mongoose, gt, hoffman, etc. There are a lot of great brands. A newer brand thats a bit cheaper, is Nirve. It was created by one of the riders of GT, and has quality stuff for a lot cheaper than some of the other brands.

Wow, you brought back some memories. Days of idolizing Greg Hill, and Harry Leary.

My first "good" bike was a Race Inc. that was stolen from my garage 2 weeks later. Still makes me hate a thief more than anything.

Replaced it with a Hutch Pro Racer that I kept till I was 18, and then girls/cars became more important. My best buddy would ride nothing other than Kuwahara.

I now have a GT mountain bike, it is great for gathering dust and holding my motorcycle jackets, etc. in the garage :p

Ridge4pd,

I am sure the Mongoose will make your boy a great bike. They have been around a long time. Hope he enjoys it as much as I used to my bikes.

Ah yes, the old days. My first bike was a Redline ProLine II, then I moved on to a JMC Racing, then a Haro Freestyler. Almost makes me wanna go out and buy a new bike just thinking about them.

I remember those days also.
If you were riding a Redline around here, you had to have $$$$.
I remember having to save up for 1 yellow mag type rim at a time.
Don't forget the pads (crossbar, stem & top tube) NO pads today?

I had the original Haro with the double top tube and the green / blue decals. Then got a Master when they came out. I had everything just like Bob's bike, down to the KKT steel cage pedals, Z-rims with freewheel for ramp riding & Skyways with a coaster brake for street.
I saw Bob Haro & Ron Wilkerson do a parking lot show in Indy a long, long time ago. Still have his book 'Freestyle Moves' that he signed for me.

These kids today don't remember what it was like back in the beginning when cowboys, framestands, 360s and coaster wheelies were the big tricks.

Wow... this place is like a time machine. I had a Mongoose Roger DeCoster a Redline and several other BMX bikes. Can anyone still do a 360? I remember being one of the only ones that could do a 360 and bunnyhop anything.

Lets see what i can remember and raced against:
GT
Redline
Elf
Kuwahara
Skyway
Diamond Back
Mongoose
DK

I owned and hand build all the bolded one expect the Redline which I bought from a friend. My favorite was the Kuwy (Chrome and debadged) with redline three piece cranks and bars, GT bear trap pedals, sealed head bearings, Bulls Eye hubs, some kind of red tires, Mushroom grips, chrome Shimano chain, and DK breaks (in the back only). I think that when all was said and done this bike cost me a little over 1k in 1987 paper route and bday money. I think I have not still been cured of this "disease" :D yet (new updated sig and pics to come).

No, not a 360 but could superman and could "bunny hop" on to a picnic table or at least the seat anyway. My favorite jump was a tabletop and I practiced regulalry. I never had any of the freestyle gizmo so my tricks were limited. Anyone remember the 360 head sets?

I have two old 360 headsets in a parts bin in the basement. Several freestyle pegs, freewheel single cogs, old wald bmx cranks and bottom brackets. Reminds me to get rid of this stuff. I have worked in a bike shop since 1975. I worked in a bike shop that sponsor a kids bmx team while I was in college in the late 70's. Went around again in the late 90's when my son and I would pick up bikes at the dump and rebuild them for the younger kids in town.

I was more into road and mountain bikes. Anyone remember Weinman, Huret, Stronglite, Phil Wood, Campagnolo Rally or Shimano Aero components? I have an old original Specialized Stumpjumper. It might be the one of the first production mountain bikes. Cantilever brakes, no shocks, just a double fork crown with a long rake and wheel base.

I am getting old, all this useless knowledge still floating around in my head.

My personal favorite was the P.K. Ripper with Landing Gear forks. My buddy had a Quadangle. S.E. Racing was ahead of their time!

Aw man, you weren't cool unless you had Landing Gear. :)
I probably haven't thought about those for 25 years.
