Honda Saves a Dog (and me)

I was on my way home from work tonight with the cruise set on 70. Out of the shadows runs this dog across the highway. I mean that dog was RIGHT THERE! All I could do was hit the brakes and turn to go behind it. ABS kicks in and I yank the wheel to the left. I miss the dog and keep on going.
The maneuver was so abrupt that if I was in a vehicle without VSA I would have been doing barrel rolls down the median. No big deal with the Ridgeline. Thanks Honda.

Wow, thats great! Nicely done! I sure hope that I don't get to test it out but it sure is nice to know that is there when you need it - and it works!

How many Ford Exploders, er...Explorers, have you seen that actually did roll when they attempted far less severe maneuvers? The outcome is not pretty. I owned one and have seen quite a few ugly rollovers first hand (not mine, thank God!). I do feel much safer in the Ridgeline than I have in any other vehicle that I have ever owned.

That's why I don't swerve to miss small animals. Isn't worth risking my life for a dog. Good to know it works though in case it was a kid or big animal like a deer.

Thanks for sharing this. It's good to know that you made an attempt to save another life, regardless of size, and that you had the confidence in your vehicle to make that attempt. It's likely that the dog makes somebody else happy as a pet- unknowingly, you made their day too! Sorry for sounding sappy but life is precious regardless of size.

I agree. I swerve to miss a frog or squirrel. :(

I'm sorry if it sounded arrogant, but my life is worth more than a dog's. If I can safely miss an animal, I try to miss it, but I've seen where people have run off the road and been killed trying to miss an animal. That won't be me.

I think many people just react...dog or not to avoid hitting it. The other day the green turned yellow and while I should have slowed down to stop I sped up and then in the split second when I realized that I might not make it at the current speed, I floored it and the RL responded and I made it through before the red. In retrospect, had I been paying better attention, I would have just slowed to a stop.

I try to go around even on road kills. Just out of respect.
