Dragonslayer 04-28-2007, 09:30 PM I took these pictures in 2004 with a sony mavica that uses a floppy disk. The highest resolution of the camera is 1024 by 798 pixels. I got the camera from a client for $50. If you hold very still it takes good pictures. One of the in camera modes is solarize or posterize. It makes the picture come out looking somewhat like a painting. I have since moved on to a Sony 8 mp slr. I forgot about some of the pictures , last night I was going through my floppy disks from the mavica. Each disk holds from 8 to 12 pictures on average and I have almost 400 pictures taken with the mavica. I amazed the members with these 5 because I printed them up on 13 by 19 paper and they still remained clear.

btw, the monkeys are okay but you gotta watch out for some of the apes (chimps in particular) as they're fond of throwing feces at those who annoy them (or sometimes, those whom they want to annoy).

Divotfixer 05-03-2007, 03:13 PM Here are some pics from a trip a couple of years ago to Fort Canby State Park (a.k.a. Cape Disappointment). This is in Washington State at the mouth of the Columbia River, where Lewis and Clark found the Pacific. There is now a quite good interpretive center / museum on the park grounds. Good camping, two lighthouses, lots of beach.
First shot is my wife and our third son (3 at the time) and it hangs on the wall behind her desk at work. The wide shot was an obvious stitch of two side by side photos, as seen in the surf. I like the shot anyway :). They came out a bit small when I condensed for the web. Sorry...

spdrcr5 05-04-2007, 09:53 AM PLEASE don't upload any images for the Photography Forum onto the ROC Servers. Thanks.

I did that climb too. I did a late spring attempt and had it rain, hail, snow and lightning on the way to the top of Grays, got to the top and was above the clouds... It was surreal.

Thanks, Tom. I used a Canon MP-E 65 macro lens. It's a macro-only lens that magnifies from 1x to 5x life size. There is no autofocus on this lens and you focus by moving back and forth. The "Salt Meets Sugar" was around 4x life size. This lens will only focus very close - it won't, like most other lenses, focus to infinity. It's a lot of fun to use and it opens up a whole new world. Feel free to visit my website at http://ronthorntonphotos.com for some other photos. :)

Thanx, Pam, I actually shot this with my phone, Blackberry Curve, the path was to busy to get down and shoot with my DSLR, so i took out my phone and shot it looking up a hill. Set the white balance to Sunlight and Wa La.
Truckin' 03-29-2008, 09:14 PM I'm impressed you got that with your Blackberry. I have the BB Pearl and I'm very disappointed with the photos it takes. All of my other (Nokia) phone cameras have taken better photos.

Your photography is just outstanding, Ron. Loved looking at the photos on your website. Incredible work! I do love macro shots, and want to get a macro lens for my Canon 350D. I'm thinking about Canon's 100mm macro lens, image stabilized version. Maybe if I keep working on my macro shots, in 30 or 40 years I "might" come kinda close to your work! Thanks for sharing your great pictures, and please keep posting!

Corvus, that photo is intriguing. Macrophotographic images are some of my favorite to view. Beauty found in common objects, so to speak.
I'm curious about the set, particularly the background and the lighting. I'm guessing the grains are on a pane of glass suspended over a dark surface and the lighting is from the sides only.
How did you do that, or is it a trade secret? :D

Ron, Thanks.
That gallery is awesome. Seriously. I've always wanted to get color like that but have never been able to. I assume it's all about the light, the film, exposure time and the filters. Maybe that's why I've had better success with B&W. :o
I realize that to get images like that is not something someone can learn overnight. How photographers get images like that is beyond me.
Those pond photos fascinate me the most. Did you use filters (ok, maybe that is a dumb question,) and is that in natural light only? Again, if I may guess, you would need a uv filter & polaroid filter and those reflective white panels (not sure what they are called.) Did that require color filters as well?
Here is an interesting point, and perhaps an insight that I've never seen published anywhere. I have a variation of anomalous trichromacy (which is often referred to incorrectly as "color blindness.") When subjects are photographed on any color film, truly the spectrum is somewhat mis-represented such that some colors are then more vivid to me. A green dress may be vague to me in reality, but on color film it becomes bright green to me. I have not noticed the same effect with reds. That may be why the pond photos offer me a glimpse of the color world I might not see otherwise, and therefore see new beauty. Keep shooting color film, and the color-deficient population will be especially grateful. Thanks.

I appreciate your comments. All of the pond photos on my website were taken with natural light and a digital SLR (either the Canon 5D or the Canon 1DMKIII) with various lenses. I use polarizing filters exclusively and don't even own any other type. I haven't shot film since 2001 and I've never looked back! I encourage you to check my website every once in a while. I'm looking forward to doing many more pond photos this spring, summer, and fall. Thanks again. Ron (corvus)

Voices, the hummingbird pics are outstanding! Good work! What kind of camera/lens are you usng to get such good close-up pics?

I have a Canon XTi and had the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens on. That thing will just reach out and touch!
The humming bird was tough, as I was about 25 to 20 feet away and zoomed to 300mm with no tripod... couldn't find it before we left. Saw a cheap monopod at Walmart for $18 bucks - should'a grabbed it.
The rodent had a feeder, so I have some serious close ups of him chowin' down.

Thanks for the reply, Voices! I have a Canon XT...the one before the XTi. Love the camera, but it's not as good as the XTi (8 vs. 10 mp). You have THE lens I want to get before my next vacation...the 70-300mm IS lens. Great to see you like it...and I'm assuming you do. Best price I've seen on that lens is $516 at Amazon.com (just recently came down from $550). If you know of a better deal, PLEASE let me know. PM me if you have some good info! Hard to beat a Canon, isn't it.
