Cargo 05-14-2007, 05:26 AM very nice photos, thank you.
VT RAIDER 05-14-2007, 06:46 AM Keith you sure do get out a lot... Nice pictures... thanks for posting... I need to get out more and see some stuff...
I must be having some picture envy... :o
djeaux 05-14-2007, 07:13 AM Great pics, Keith!
My Great-great-grandpa's letters home (http://www.djeaux.com/civil_war_letters/) might be interesting as a follow-up. He wasn't exactly a willing participant in the "lost cause" & was killed at the Battle of Big Black River in May 1863. After that engagement, the Confederates fell back into the siegeworks at Vicksburg. Those manicured fields & monuments don't really describe the horror that took place there 144 years ago.
"O what anafult thing war is."
very nice photos, thank you.

I must be having some picture envy... :oThanks. Yeah, I try to get out a couple of weekends a month to see what I can see. Vicksburg is 3 hrs from me, so it did make for a long day, but well worth it. I also went to the original place where Coca-Cola was bottled as well and have some pretty good memorabilia photos to post. I find it dull to not go and see or do anything. The world is a big place and I want to see it.
I might be going to Houston this Saturday for a Civic meet, but I haven't decided yet. But will definitely be in Houston for a long Memorial day weekend doing the tourist thing.
Cajun Country Ridgeline 05-25-2007, 02:26 AM FANTASTIC PICTURES KEITH.
THE FIRST TIME WE EVER WENT TO VICKSBURG WAS ON A HONDA GOLDWING.
I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THE SIZE OF THE PLACE.
THE MONUMENTS ARE JUST BREATH TAKING. A VERY SAD BUT BEAUTIFUL PLACE.
ROBIN AND I ARE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO ST. LOUIS.
WE WILL LEAVE ABOUT A WEEK EARLY TO GO SEE ROBIN'S MOM IN HARRISON, AR. THAT WILL PUT US REAL CLOSE TO ST. LOUIS.
AFTER THAT WE WILL BE 5 HOURS FROM OUR OLDEST DAUGHTER'S HOME IN GENOA, IL.
I REALLY LIKE YOUR HONDA CIVIC. I TRIED TO GET ONE FROM ROBIN BUT SHE WANTED SOMETHING LARGER AND PICKED THE MAZDA CX-7 WHICH WE HAVE BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH.
SEE YOU IN ST. LOUIS.
Bubber02 05-25-2007, 05:31 AM Great pics, Keith!

All I can say is wow! Thank you for sharing those letters.
djeaux 05-25-2007, 07:29 AM Thanks for the good words, Bubber. I sometimes tell people that the last member of my direct lineage to serve in combat fought against the United States, but truthfully that guy wasn't a willing soldier.
This is a GREAT weekend to go visit your closest monuments. These should be more popular than a cartoon mouse (Disney)... sigh

Yeah Keith, we took your advice and are gone for the weekend too. I was happy to find wireless internet at our new digs as well!!
Cochise111 05-27-2007, 12:12 PM Did you know the siege on Vicksburg lasted for almost two months? The citizens of Vicksburg were subjected to artillery barrages the entire time and the city was surrounded so no supplies could get in. Because the townspeople were starving they began eating their horses before the siege was over. When the water ran out, they had to call it quits. Vicksburg finally surrendered on July 4, 1863. Vicksburg didn't begin celebrating Independence Day for almost 100 years (until the 1950s) as sort of a mourning period for their Civil War surrender. (One of my majors in college was history.)
