meanmachine19 06-09-2007, 10:51 AM Sedonaaz (Jason), AZ Ridgeliner (Mike), TuckerNason (Tucker) and I are gonna have a little mini-meet and do a (complete) run up Schnebly Hill Rd on Monday, June 25th. Time to be determined. We may do a late afternoon and catch a herd of elk or deer around dusk. But we may just opt for an early morning run too depending on the majority consensus.
Also on our 'to do' list is Cherry Road. This is not in Sedona but nearby, with a little 1860's history to it. If we can't make Schnebly Hill (Forest closures, fire season) then we will do the alternate route.
Anyone interested in joining, let us know and keep an eye on this thread for further. :D
Az RTL 06-09-2007, 08:52 PM I'd like to but Mondays are not good, have to work.

Dave, if Sundays work for you, let me know. I work Saturdays and I'd have to check with Jason (think he works Saturdays, too). I know Mike and Tucker are more flexible.
AZDirtDog 06-12-2007, 11:37 AM I would be tempted if it was a week later. I'm teaching summer school, but it ends on the 28th.

I'll keep it in mind if the 25th falls thru. Nothing says we can't go more than once! :D
meanmachine19 06-26-2007, 10:17 PM SedonaAZ, AZRidgeliner and I made a run up Schnebly Hill Rd. in Sedona last yesterday afternoon/early evening. Unfortunately Tucker could not join us, so just the three of us made the trip looking for elk and deer. No luck on the elk, but a couple deer.
Schnebly Hill Rd. is 12 miles long. For those that were at the 2005 meet, the road was not open the whole way because of weather. It is open now and we had a blast. Pretty dusty and some mighty dirty trucks afterwards!
Here are a couple pics.
meanmachine19 06-26-2007, 10:20 PM A couple more.....
My two little ones are on the left with Jason's oldest (his youngest was camera shy)....
Truckin' 06-26-2007, 10:30 PM Could you go the whole length of the road? We wondered about doing it when we ended up with an extra day to explore while there in April. We started up there but decided to explore elsewhere since we had no info about how rough it got.

I hope you washed down that dust with a couple of cold ones and some eats at Tamale Mama's!

Tamale Mama's closed down! :( But we had a good time anyways!

Hey Pam, it was open the whole way up. At least the main part of the road all the way up to the Interstate. I've never crossed over to the other side and don't know if it even goes anywhere.
Its a different world just north of where we were last year. Lots of Ponderosa Pines, cooler temps, people camping out, etc. Usually a haven for elk and deer, but we were probably up there a little too early for the elk.
In the spring it is hit or miss, depending on if there was snow or not. Likewise in the summer with the fire dangers.
Very cool and bumpy ride! The kids had a blast!! :p
Az RTL 07-05-2007, 09:39 PM Kevin,
Is there any way to find out if the road is open in advance?

I would suggest calling the Coconino County Sheriff's Office or USFS - Red Rock Country (http://http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coconino/recreation/red_rock/rec_redrock.shtml). There is a phone number in the link.
Right now it is still open but that may change very soon due to draught conditions.
sedonaaz 07-06-2007, 12:06 PM I did hear that they are going to close the entire forest if we don't get rain by the 13th.
Truckin' 07-06-2007, 03:53 PM After the terrible fire down there last year, I'm not surprised. Good luck for the rain coming. We need it up here too so you can send it north. The wind and heat are just drying everything out and the fire danger is high everywhere around the western states.
Az RTL 07-09-2007, 07:21 PM Do you need the Red Rock Pass to go there?
Truckin' 07-09-2007, 10:19 PM Yes. :) Don't let that stop you.
meanmachine19 07-10-2007, 02:41 PM Do you need the Red Rock Pass to go there?
Only if you plan on hiking or are going to be away from your vehicle. If you are stopping to take pictures, you will be fine.
Otherwise, its $5 for a day, and can be gotten at any of the convenience stores ( Circle K, Giant) in town.
We didn't get them last time up Schnebly Hill Rd., but we did at the April meet since we went for a little hike to see some Indian ruins by Honanki (off the FR 525 trail).
When are you thinking of coming up? If you want some company, I'm sure we can get a truck or two to join you! :D
Az RTL 07-12-2007, 07:21 PM We went up this past Tuesday, didn't really do much but take Schnebly Hill road from 179 to I-17 and came back home. We did stop on the road for lunch and some hiking.
5S Dude 07-12-2007, 08:27 PM We sure had fun on our last visit and can't wait until next time!

Wish I had known you were coming! Tucker and I were out and about on Wednesday but we could have met you, along with AZ Ridgeliner. Oh, well, next time perhaps! Hope you had a good trip!
