I have had excellent service from David MacDavid Honda Dealer in both Frisco, Texas and Irving, Texas.

By the way, don't worry too much about the tornados. When you get here, just buy a weather radio and learn the different weather alert terms and classifications. I've been here for the last thirty years and have only three tornados close to the house :D

"Close" is relative up in this area of Texas. The relatively flat terrain in parts of the area give you a good view of everything between yourself and the horizon, so even if you are able to see a tornado from your front porch, it may not necessarily be within a dangerous range.

Keep in mind that I don't know Mike's situation here - he might be talking about tornadoes at the end of his block for all I know. Ask him. :D

I have two Hondas purchased at Lute Riley Honda. They are at Collins and 75. Service has been outstanding with techs that have been there for 25+ years. Lute Riley is the second largest Honda dealership based on volume in the country.

I have an early build Ridgeline with quite a bit of issues. Lute Riley did a fine job handling all of them and provided substantial service discounts (some free) for my troubles, and the best part is I did not have to ask for them.

From Flower Mound, you would want to take George Bush Freeway to 75.

It is a bit of a drive.

Hope you enjoy Flower Mound. I used to live in Flower Mound and very much enjoyed the city's friendly atmosphere and polite people as well as close proximity to great shopping, restaurants, lakes (Grapevine and Lake Lewisville) and excellent golf courses (Tour 18, Grapevine Municipal).

Jim McNatt Honda in Corinth/Denton on 35E has a good service shop. We take our Pilot and Ridgeline there.

It would be a quick trip North from Flowermound. I suggest getting a GPS if you are moving to DFW. I have lived here all my life and still get lost :p

Ask for Matt - he owns a RL also.

They are not called basements in DFW, we call them pools.:D
And, don't let MikeT scare you with the tornadoes bit, it's the hail storms that get you every time in DFW.

Just echoing what others say about tornadoes. I've lived in Texas most of my life and always in "tornado alley". Although I"ve seen a couple of funnel clouds, I have never seen a tornado.

The real weather threats are:

1) Heat (August and first of September)
2) Hail
3) Lightening
4) Strong winds from wind shear (also a driver of the hail)

The weather is what makes this area of the world fun to be in. There's an old saying; "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes and it'll change". Most of the flooding that makes the news is from heavy slow moving thunderstorms that dump incredible amounts of water in a very short period of time. Parts of California see this when it rains there. I used to work in the Oakland / Sacramento area. No slams to cali, but I like it where I am better, when you get here you'll like it as well.

Right now, it seems like the mid-cities (Euless, especially) are not the place to be, weather-wise. Too much water in too short a time.

I'm compelled to speak up for Garland, a suburb on the northeast corner of Dallas. When it comes to Metroplex cities that make the headlines for weather or other catastrophes, Garland ranks towards the bottom of the list. It's one of those suburbs that's near everything but not stuck in the middle of everything, if you get my drift. Some would call it boring or blue-collar, but that depends on what part of Garland you're talking about. South Garland, especially near I-30 and Lake Ray Hubbard, has got a good mix of middle-class and upper-class neighborhoods.

We get our share of storms here, but the really nasty stuff seems to steer clear of us. Most of the time the storms head from west-to-east, northwest-to-southeast, or south-to-north, and by the time they get to Garland they've expended most of their energy moving through the cities in between. There used to be a bit of a flooding problem along some of the creeks, but some work was done to clear them and I haven't seen any problems in over 10 years. In any case, Garland has some hilly areas - just pick a house on top of a hill and you'll be relatively safe. :D

Rowlett is also rather nice, although it's a bit closer to the fringes of development than Garland. It's just to the east, in between Garland and Rockwall. It also tends to get hit a bit harder by the weather, probably since there's not as much development to the northwest in spots for shielding. It's also a bit more expensive in terms of newer houses.

Don't live in DFW, but travel there frequently for work. I have two friends in the Flowermound area, both are very happy there. Whatever you do, don't move to Roanoke - being that close to "Babes" may be dangerous to your health (err... waistline :D :D ).

I've heard it said if you park at the high point of Flower Mound and stand on the roof of your Ridgeline you can just see top of the St. Louis Arch on the horizon. (ok, maybe it's not *that* flat... But close... ha ha)

I would say that it totally depends on where you are going to be commuting to for work...unless you love traffic jams. If you have school age children, I'd put the school district at the top of the list.

I've had very good luck with Frank Kent Honda which is located in west Fort Worth.

I lived in North Dallas, Plano and Irving 7 years apart and can honestly tell you it is changing quickly. I had my office downtown and was 10 miles away with the traffic at normal times it would take more than an hour to get home...

I think the Ice storms are also kind of a hassle. Remember the Dallas/Miami football game on thanksgiving 93' when Leon Lett slipped on the sleet/snow and lost the game? well that was in Dallas on thanksgiving ... just to give you an idea of how wacky the weather is. I have lived in NJ most of my life and it is rare for NY City to get an ice/snow storm that early. So much for global warming

Overall it is a nice area, cheap housing and insurance, good mix of people from all parts of the country and some Great car dealers. (they have white showrooms that you drive into and your car comes back clean.

Good luck

Texas is great. I live in Lewisville so know the area. The Bankston Honda in Lewisville has been good to me so far, but have not had any major issues to take to them yet.

As far as weather, they just posted a flash flood warning that expires on Wednesday afternoon (it's currently Monday morning) I think the weather people are just giving up. Flooding is not rally a problem in most of the areas just need to make sure you are not buying in the flood plane.

One last note on weather releated issues. Most of the towns test their weather sirens on the first Wednesday afternoon of the month, so dont panic if you hear them going off.

Insurance is not too bad I pay about 100$ a month for full coverage on my 07 Ridgeline. Home insurance is another issue; $120,000.00 home is running about $1300.00 a year.

On another note just down the highway south (About 6 miles) is Carrollton and another Babes Fried Chicken is there. :)

The only real problem with riding in Dallas is that a large number of drivers look at you as a target instead of as another driver :(

I am thinking about Keller

The whole area around Keller / Southlake / Grapevine / Flowermound has been built up considerably in the last few years. I've lived in Southlake for the past 10 years and the growth is huge. The schools are also good there, and it's only about 15 minutes away from DFW airport, another plus. The commute to Dallas is not bad either, about an hour during rush hour and half that late at night.

I live in Keller and it's a great place to live in. I live closer to Davis blvd and use that to go south to hwy 121 to go downtown Fort Worth for work. Davis hits loop 820 and hwy 121 so you can go downtown or go south on loop 820 and hit I-30 to hit up Dallas.

I see that NAS JRB is at the old Carswell AFB in West Forth Worth. - so I-35 would be a more direct route from Keller, go south on I-35 then take loop 820 west around and that get's pretty close to the NAS - JRB. Much more traffic on I-35 - especially during morning and evening commutes to work.

Keller has some great schools, still somewhat of a small town appearance and enough shopping / goods close by that you don't have to drive forever to find anything.

Lots of housing that's Keller schools but actually in Fort Worth that's between Hwy 377 (Denton hwy) and I-35.

OH - I've used Huggins Honda and had great service from them. They are on loop 820 just off Davis blvd in North Richland Hills

Growth out west along I-30 / I-20 depending upon you needs.

This is such a large area that you need to do some driving around to get a feel for where you want to live. We moved here about 9 months ago, but been coming to company offices for a long time in Fort Worth and Dallas, so I already had a good idea of what roads moved good and what roads resemble a parking lot at times.

PM me if you need some more info - be glad to help

yes - old Carswell AFB in FTW.

That's what we did ove rthe summer - visited family and checked out the area. I did not get the joy of peak traffic times to really see what I would be up against, though. Really never even made it to Keller, just some housing areas near I-35, east side. Seems pretty nice.

thanks - I may take you up on the PM

Might I suggest Cabelas, has everything a man could possibly need:
Groceries - Jerky, fudge and a couple others of the basic food groups.
Fine Home Furnishings - Timeless collections of classic furniture......in camo.
A Zoo - The animals don't move around much, but that is better for pics.
Fishing stuff - Never been in that dept, don't understand it.
Not too sure about cold beer, but there's a handy little fillin station across the road that I highly recommend.:o
Plan on spending a couple days and don't worry about money, they will give you a Cabelas credit card when you walk in the door.:D

getyourmindright,

I haven't lived in DFW since '00 when I graduated from TCU, but I did live in Hulen area, west of Downtown Ft. Worth.

It was a growing area and from I understand from friends living in the area still is that shopping has grown, housing is still cheap, and living conditions are better than the Plano, Grapevine, FlowerMound of Dallas.

Benbrook is certainly a suggestion as I am sure it is still a quiet and nice place to grow a family.

Thought I would add my two cents. About the weather. July-Sept. 95-105. Hail/Heavy storms (once or twice a year) and I was living in Ft. Worth when the two tornados hit Downtown. Again, this was a freak storm and in my five years, didn't see any other tornados.. except when driving out towards Lubbock.

Possum Kindgom Lake is a spot you will want to check out frequently if you like the outdoors and fishing. Hope your move goes well and personally recommend Ft. Worth over Arlington/Dallas area. My bias, but it has more of a rustic, old western feel to it that I enjoyed.

Take care and good luck in the state I call my "second home."

There's a little bit of new construction going on, but for the most part, it's well established neighborhoods. There's also lots of good places to shop and eat nearby. The other good thing about that area is the traffic between there and the base is not bad at all compared to some of the other surrounding areas.

I hope your move goes well and if you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to ask.

Welcome to DFW!!

My wife and I got married and started a family here; other than the ocassional tornado scares  , we really like it :)

I take our Hondas to McDavid Frisco for engine oil changes (quick in-n-out), Lute Riley for tranny flush (they offer this on the Express bay so its much cheaper), and Discount tire for tire rotations (free ;-).
