3 week trip around the west in the Ridge!

Just got back from a huge 3 week trip visiting as many National Parks throughout the west. As you can see it was quite an undertaking. Beginning in Sacramento, CA and heading north toward Seattle, then heading east toward Montana, south into Wyoming, east into South Dakota, south into Colorado, along the south of Colorado into southern Utah and then up into Nevada and home.

Some of the sites seen were... Mt Shasta, Klamath Falls, Crater Lake National Park, Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, Mount Rainier National Park, Pikes Place Market in Seattle, Olympic National Park, North Cascades National Park, Glacier National Park, Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Devils Tower National Park, Mt Rushmore National Memorial, Crazy Horse Memorial, Rocky Mountain National Park, Denver, Colorado Springs, Durango, Mesa Verde National Park, Natural Bridges National Monument, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Bryce Canyon National Park, and finally Emerald Bay State Park at Lake Tahoe.

As you can see we have a Coleman Yuma popup that weighs somewhere around 2500lbs. The Ridge pulled it very, very well. The small trailer tires where rated at 65mph so I tried to stay near that when I could. I was able to pass trucks and other campers by running up to as much as 75mph or so. The Ridge can run at 4000 RPM all day... with a few spikes up to 5800 RPM. We started with 2330 miles on the odometer and returned with 7890 miles. Of course I was negative 2000 on the MM... but what can you do?

A few interesting things to note about the RTL. The ride was great, what else can I say. There were some days that we drove for 11 hours. I found that by raising the front of the lower seat and keeping the back of the lower seat down I had more leg room. Of course I had to adjust the back of the seat so that it would not tip back so far. This helped me from getting so tired. The Navagation system was excellent. We were able to re-route or detour when needed to get a better route that would not take as long. The only thing that bugged me about the system is that it would not route you through National parks. While driving in hilly, switchback road the Nav helped me see how tight the next turn was before I got to it. We found that if we wanted to go to a certain town and we didn't know the address we would just select a gas station in town and it would route us there without a problem. We also have Nav in our Accord Hybrid but prefer the one in the Ridge. It's larger and easier to navigate.

The last night at Emerald Bay State Park

I figured with the trailer and everything loaded in the Ridge that we would get 12 MPG and about 200 miles per tank full. We did much, much better than that with an overall trip average of 15.65 MPG.

One thing I need to point out is that if we were going to do this again... we wouldn't. Not in the 3 week timeframe and we would have stayed longer at each of the spots. An example is the Grand Tetons are best seen early in the morning as the sun rises, not in the late afternoon as we did. We I get all our pictures loaded on smugmug I'll update this with the link.

Great adventure. My kind of fun. Thanks for sharing.:)

BTW, if the Silvers have them there flux capacitors that make them faster, I'm certain the Whites are equiped with torquometers standard that add extra towing power. Great choice of truck and color too.

Haha... thanks. The only problems were a broken bike mount... too much bounce I guess and a dent in the side of the Ridge! :( Found out some of the Nevada slot machine joints are using a new marketing tool. They fire baseballs at cars to get them to stop in. Must have been some nose-pickin' Rug Rats I guess... that's for another time.

Actually, it's an inherent advantage of our color choice. White reflects the most light and heat which means that our trucks run cooler and, therefore, have more torque. And, of course, White looks really cool.

Sounds like it was a great trip and couldn't agree more about we all need to take a bit more time to "stop and smell the flowers" when we're on these treks. There's a lot of things I'd liked to have stopped to see on my recent trips to St. Louis and Kiawah Island but just didn't have the time. Oh well, retirement is coming soon and then we'll make the time fershure!

What I thought also 2 years ago, no one told me that gas was going out of sight, traffic was increasing, taxes going up, and worst of all Cracker Barrel seems to be using smaller plates! I am not doing near the travel I had anticipated. Think I will save up for the 2008 meet!

Awesome trip sparky! This it the trip Twintym and I had talked about all year. We want to camp at the same exact sites as well only not all in one trip. We’ll have to take the farthest one and try to stay a bit longer. Great write up and excellent photos too! We sure hope to meet you in Santa Cruz for the second annual All Cal meet & greets. Happy Camping!

Three weeks off in a row. For me, that has to wait until retirement or death.:D I'm jealous, but will live vicariously through your picture album when it comes out.

WOW, that's a lot of country to cover in three weeks! You picked some of the best sights to take in along the way, but you're absolutely correct about needing more time in each of the places you saw.

I look forward to seeing your photo collection too. Glad to meet another SmugMugger on the ROC.

Wow! Thats a heck of a trip! Looks like a blast. That is the type of trip I would like to take since I have not been too far north since moving to AZ 12+ years ago.

But like Bill B said, maybe at retirement! LOL...I am sure I can get three weeks off, but I gotta get a trailer first! :D

Great pics, sorry to see you didn't make it further south into AZ! Perhaps next time!

I want to do the same trip from here in Northern California to Redding and up I-5 on the Volcano route. Unfortunately for me my busy season as a gardener is spring and summer. Fall and winter are my time of little work. I hope to retire at 50 in the next three years and get myself a small farm and be a farmer, I will really be tied down then:eek: and I would like to take some time off and do a trip like this but over a longer time scale, like at least four or five weeks.

Hey, RTL_sparky, we are a two honda family too, our other honda is an 07 accord hybrid in pearl white, what is the color of your hybrid accord?

thanks for sharing, we took a similar trip a few years ago... 10K miles in 21 days...

Our next trip is to drive to Alaska and take the ferry back to seattle and drive back east. I know what you mean about needing more time but you have to have your own biz or work for yourself to be able to take the needed time off.

cool trip. once, I did a similar circuit, and when my kids were 10 we drove from east coast to west, hitting every battlefield and museum on the way. now that you've scoped these places out, you can load up and hit one for a week. if summer ever starts here I might do the same!!
