I'm am research new offroad tires and a lift package. Sorry for what may be an obvious question...but have people experience large drops in gas mileage with this combo?

Generally speaking, larger tires create more unsprung weight and most people who who upsize truck tires go for a more aggressive look which in some cases cause higher rolling resistance. Both scenarios usually end up costing you in the MPG department. There are some folks who have done what you are thinking about. What tire are you specifically thinking about? Are you planning on doing a lift? Please let us know so we can see if we can give you some specific feedback. :) rednek ridgey 09-23-2007, 07:45 PM I have a 2 inch lift with stock wheels and micky thompson 31"s....im gettin about 10-12 city with about 14-17 highway....keeping it below 3000 rpm makes a HUGE difference...hope this helps u zuhl 09-23-2007, 08:28 PM After the lift but before new tires and rims, I got 20mpg on the one highway trip I made, so I dont think the increased wind resistance under the truck is that big of an issue. That is basically what I got before. My best ever before the lift was one trip doing 60 with no A/C I got 23. A few weeks after the lift I put on 265/60/R18 Goodyear Wrangeler Silent Armors (30.50" dia) with some Ruff Racing Wheels. On my first highway trip I got terrible mileage, around 16. Since then I have noticed it improving. I generally keep it around 65 when I drive and on my last trip, which was 20% city, I got 19mpg. So not too bad. Also before this trip I noticed that Discount Tire had only put in 30 psi in the tires, so I bumped it up to 35. That may have helped me out by decreasing the rolling resistance. I have noticed that the VTec tends to kick in and bump it up to 2500 rpms on inclines more often than it did before the larger tires. It seems to be "learning" however, because it is not doing it nearly so much as it did just after the tire package. I can regulate my speed without a downshift or the Vtec kicking in much better if I drive without cruise control. I have had them about a month now, and I was really upset at first with the s#itty mileage, but now it seems to be working out. And it looks sooooo much better. Dont mean to high jack the thread or anything but have you had any rubbing issues with those tires? zuhl 10-01-2007, 07:28 PM None at all with the Goodyear Wrangler SA's. And I have put it through all kinds of stuff since then. I did cut my mudflap and grind down some of the pinch weld before I put these on to try to fit the Nittos though. I am not sure if that is even necessary though. Possibly cutting the mudflap would help, but I don't think you would really need to do the grinding. Oh and I need to correct my last post, I believe that is 4th gear that happens at 2500rpm, not the Vtech shift. I have a friend in L.A. who works for Honda as an engineer and he set me straight on that. | |
