Exhaust outlets are very frequently detailed like this on show prototypes and then "normalized" to a simple tailpipe in production versions. Exhaust pipes flush with bodywork come with a whole bunch of baggage, including soiling the paint (over the long run, permanently) and transferring engine vibrations to the body as brackets wear, settle and/or shift due to heat.
