I very much doubt he is using a real train horn. A real train horn w/o compressor or tank in rough condition is about 2500-3000.
These 3 horn kits are for real. There are several manuf out there and I'm trying to find the best.

And no I'm not poking fun. I will not be mounting these in the bed nor the tank in the trunk. I want a set up I can mount under the hood. A 1gallon tank with compressor will fit and I would problem mount the horns in front of the radiator.

If you want real locomotive air horns you need to buy a set of Nathan Airchimes. It takes six horns to sound like a locomotive. You'll need a minimum of about an 80 gallon compressed air storage tank with a couple of 1" lines to the manifold. The compressor is not as important unless you intend to maintain a sustained blast (the 80 gallons will last maybe 10 seconds).

There won't be much room left in the Ridgeline but you'll make your presence known with a set of Nathan K5's.

You can hear them here:

What I think is that you don't know the difference. Not many "big rigs" have the air capacity to run a real locomotive horn.

There are a lot of people that want to say they've got "train horns" when they don't know what a train horn is.

A locomotive horn is not one you can run off a 5 gallon storage tank with a 3/8" air line.

If you want to think you have "train horns" on your Ridgeline then find a web site that tells you they're selling you train horns and you can buy them and think you have train horns.

If you want real train horns then there are only two brands to buy, and I don't think I've ever seen them on a big rig, but I won't say it's never happened.

Well silly me, I read your original post, "I want to install a train horn in my Ridge. The type with air tank and compressor. Any recommendations????????????" and thought you were serious.

I had no idea that you meant "I don't really want real train horns, I want what I call train horns".

Well, train horns are train horns. Horns made to sound like train horns are not train horns. Isn't that confusing?

If you want train horns then there are only two brands (in the last 50 years or so) to buy.

It's so much easier to actually say what you mean.

LET ME PUT THIS IS YOUR LANGUAGE, because everyone else who read this understood. I want a train horn, oh not the one that apparently only I call a train horn but about 30 companies that do. Does it have to be the one off of a conrail NO. I would like one that sounds like a train. Will it be exactly the same or as loud, NO.

And you your advise to my question is so helpful, I can't thank you enough.

"If you want to think you have "train horns" on your Ridgeline then find a web site that tells you they're selling you train horns and you can buy them and think you have train horns."

Well there are differences to the compressors, or type of horn, that's why I asked for recommendations. I hope you are this helpful to all the ROC members because without people like you we wouldn't be able to tell who the good guys are.

Oh, and I should have a REAL train horn in about 2 weeks from an engineer friend. I'll make sure to post when I get it, to find a use for it. I hope you can be more helpful then since I am really looking forward to your opinions.

Hey boxsky, lay off Joe. He's simply trying to tell you that real train horns are like the ones I sent you the link for. REAL train horns. You can't run them off of a 1 gallon tank or they'll sound like a fart.

Anything else is an imitation, clone, knockoff, or as Frank Zappa would say, a Sears train horn. They do not sound the same. They try and sound the same but they don't. You can't replace the sound of an engineered, cast aluminum trumpet with a spun brass trumpet.

It's like going to Wal-Mart and buying a Les Paul clone, taking it home and plugging it into your Marshall, and wondering why it doesn't sound like a real Les Paul. Gee, it sure looks like a Les Paul.

I thought he meant a real train horn as well. Train horns is pretty specific. Train horns to me are horns that would be found on a train. Likewise big rig truck horns are horns used on big rig trucks.

What are you exactly looking for Boxsky? I can tell you that I had air horns on my RL at one time. Mine had a compressor but didn't have a tank. I had the 2 trumpet ones made by Wolo. They were ok but I wouldn't swap them out for the Ridgeline OEM horns.

I live about 2 miles from a BNSF track and I can clearly hear the train engineer sounding his warning as he approaches the road crossing, even with my windows closed. I love the sound. Near the crossing it is drop to your knees, plug your ears, prepare for shock loud!
Until now I too was not aware that some companies were selling feeble knockoffs and calling them "train Horns".
Perhaps we need to get our terminology correct. There are true locomotive horns like those made by Nathan, and there are wimpy automotive knockoffs they try to sell as "train horns".
If it does not require a 100 gallon air tank and a very high volume air compressor it's just a pretender.:D If that's what the original poster wants he should have made that clear!

I'd bet a dollar that they are not. I'm sure that they all come with some sort of disclaimer that these horns are for "offroad use" only.

I mentioned earlier in the thread that there is a guy in my area who has a set of these horns on his truck. I saw him being written a ticket by the police on a public road after spending an afternoon scaring the pink hair off of old ladies at the local mall.

Most local jurisdictions have laws against loud music and noise. I would say that a 120 dB shrill chord from a set of hornblasters could be construed as loud music in any court of law. A 3 note musical chord by definition is music.

Well, kind of a grey area. According to the Texas DOT, adding the electronic horn is not illegal and its "proper" use is not illegal. You can be written a ticket for honking your OEM horn if there is not a "real" reason for sounding it/them. Train horns are illegal because they are even louder than the horns and sirens on firetrucks and (in Texas) they are specified as illegal for public road use.

It will be wired so that there is a switch to go from regular stock horn to the train horn knock-off. So I will use the regular horn on the steering wheel but can switch back and forth at will for which horn blasts.

Won't be the super load real train blast but will be loud enough to knock the cell phone out of the hand of the person running 10 under in the fast lane !!

Undoubtedly he got a good laugh but in the end he doesn't use it except for when the deer try to cross into his path.

Just be careful.

Thanks, Brad

Careful for sure.
I will not be using it to blast pedestrians

Rather highway quick blasts when people not paying attention need to move over and/or hang up the phone.

Also tied into the alarm system so when a bad guy breaks into my truck you don't hear those standard whistles and sirens that noone pays attention to.

My Alarm will get instant attention and I will come running armed and ready !

because a regular horn just can't get the job done...

Remember when Cadillac horns had a very distinctive train horn like sound?

Also wanted to clarify something here.............................

The set-up I ordered is not an official "Train Horn" as used on locomotives.
Instead it is a 4 horn set-up from HornBlasters.com
It is not as loud as a train horn nor as big.
It is legal in all 50 states
It is designed for use on automobiles and truck

Those of you who do not like them are probably, my guess, the same people driving slow in the fast lane and/or talking on your cell.

Slow traffic keep right! Its the law.

Block me and I Blast you with my fake train horn
I live in South Florida where road rage is common so I have my concealed carry permit as well.

Slow traffic to the right...agreed...I am one of those who don't like the train horn and I'm not driving slow in the fast lane or talking on the cell...sorry to be the outlier in your personal statistical poll...

If your horn is legal, I can't question you using it when you need to. Please don't give old people heart attacks.
I hope you never find a day to have to unconceal your concealed weapon.

Doing a little stereo typing here I think. What do you consider slow? If I'm driving the speed limit in the left lane while passing someone in the right lane, I'M NOT BREAKING ANY LAWS. I hope you're not one of these bozos that get behind me while I'm doing the speed limit and ride my bumper. I see those people every day. They are a traffic hazard and kill many Innocent drivers every year.

You just further verified my initial response to this thread that you are a wreckless moron. I am also in S. FL. Blow it at me and we can discuss my point of view face to face. You draw a gun on me and you had better shoot me dead on the spot, douche bag!
