OEM Tonneau questions...

This may have been covered but I have not been able to find it.

1) The OEM cover is reputed to be heavy. How heavy is it? In lbs? or can an able bodied male pick it up and poke it in the back seat?

2) the locking tab on the tailgate looks like it might stick up and get wiped off when you slide something in the bed, true? or not a problem?

Thanks

My guess would be about 50lbs. I have lifted mine off a few times by myself. I am about 6ft and 220lbs.

Don't know the actual weight of the top. It is somewhat heavy, and a bit akward. but it is manageable. I needed to take mine off this week, so I took out the bolts. When I put it back on I used the 3/16 hitch pins to hold in in place rather than putting the bolts back in.

I saw that tip on another thread here, works well. Now you don't need a wrench to take it off.

As previously stated, the OEM cover is somewhat heavy but manageable. IMHO I would replace the four attachment bolts with hinge clips if you plan on removing it more than one or twice a year.

The locking tab on the tailgate does fold down when not in use, but it is by no means flush. If you are not careful you could break it off while sliding items into the bed with the tailgate down.

In spite of these fallbacks I would recommend the OEM cover. I carry my wheelchair in the bed and need a Tonneau that locks. :D

Good luck with your choice!

Do any of you guys know why, when installing the OEM Tonneau, you have to remove the the rear roof trim and just replace the two grommets??? I am thinking of purchasing and installing the tonneau myself.

Any other hints/suggestions you may have re installation would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to guess the rear roof trim is removed so as to remove the bed side panels. The grommets just get replaced every time the room trim is removed.

I'm guessing that because several other of their instructions go through the same drill, when the bed side panels are removed.

After installing the hitch, I think I have learned to follow their instructions carefully. For example in that operation, they have a step that says pull the pigtail out from the quarter panel. It doesn't say "pull the pigtail out from the quarter panel now, because if you wait till after the next step it will go from damn near impossible to very much impossible", which is the whole truth.

I was able to install mine without removing the roof trip. It is suppose to come off to remove the upper side trim. I removed the lights on the upper side trim and was able to gently pry them out without touching the roof trip.

Thanks for the info guys! It's great to get advice from people who have actually done it. I guess that's why they call those things "instuctions" and not "explanations".

You guys are invaluable!!!

From what I understand, everyone whom I've gotten advice from said that is seems complicated but actually fairly simple to install. Honda even marked the panels to show you where to drill the holes for the tonneau installation. Those guys think of everything.

1) An able bodied male can pick it up and remove it with little problem. It is awkward, but not a real pain. As for putting in the back seat, I haven't tried, good question.

2) The tab hasn't been a problem and I have "used" the truck a lot. Then again, it only takes once.

Can't help on the install question as I left that headache to the dealer upon purchasing. Love the cover though!

I followed the directions to the letter (except taking the roof trim off). It seems hard but really isn't. Takes awhile though. Took me about 5 hours. Although I was trying to keep an eye on my toddler at the same time.

Anybody figure out the purpose of drilling the holes on the front bed panel. The ones you fill with rubber grommets after drilling? Just can't see the purpose of them other than possible drainage.

The purpose of the holes is to let any snow build-up on the outside of the rear window when it melts to run down instead of coming in on the rear sliding window molding...

Can someone with an OEM tonneau cover that has replaced the bolts with hitch pins please post some pictures? It would be great to see what you're talking about. Thanks.
