I have the original Digital Rebel (300D/Kiss). I will be upgrading to the 40D. I was wondering if there are members currently using the 40D and what their opinions are on the camera.
Any Canon 40D users?bongus 10-02-2007, 11:26 AM I have the original Digital Rebel (300D/Kiss). I will be upgrading to the 40D. I just upgraded from the 300d myself and love the xti. You add the grip to the xti and a great fit in your hand. When I first got the camera it was a tight fit in my hand but with the grip it is perfect Ridge Man 10-05-2007, 08:40 PM You could check out this great site for camera reviews. http://www.dpreview.com/ bongus 10-21-2007, 10:26 PM I ordered my 40D about 2 weeks ago and it looks like I won't get it until November. It appears to be sold out in many stores. I've already bought my 8GB CF card and 580EX II flash...just waiting for the camera. I've already sold my Digital Rebel so I'm in camera limbo right now. BillB 10-22-2007, 09:38 AM http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=MultiMiscPageAct&key=Learning_Station&fcategoryid=2533 Great place for Canon users. ridgelinef4i 10-22-2007, 07:33 PM did you try bhphotovideo.com they have it with a 28-135 lens for 1500...what i paid for my 20D along time ago. good luck i know it can't arrive at your door soon enough. kanji 10-22-2007, 08:09 PM I ordered my 40D about 2 weeks ago and it looks like I won't get it until November. Luv the new Digic 3 processor and the Live View feature and a fast shutter speed. Similar to the Mark 1Ds III, Utilizing two motors for the shutter and mirror at 6.5. For the price and the least amount of pictures i shoot, i may have to upgrade at a later day. I have the Canon Xti with the batter grip, also bought a Tamron 28x300 XR Di Super Zoom lens for it, so i know if i upgrade later, i don't have to sell the lens:D Also like the new battery grip for the 40D, it has Wifi, USB storage, Cat5 for LAN, and LCD readout for battery life and transfer. If you live in SoCal, or if you decide to go to another Store, try these store: Canogacamera.com or Hoopercamera.com they are both good stores and they are the cheapest in price but not in product. alexander 10-22-2007, 08:13 PM For the money I would go with the xti. No kidding...did you see the price on the battery grip? That sucker is like $800!!! BTW, I just got the tracking number for the 40D it should be on my doorstep tomorrow...wooohoooo. C'mon UPS!!!! kanji 10-23-2007, 01:13 AM No kidding...did you see the price on the battery grip? That sucker is like $800!!! BTW, I just got the tracking number for the 40D it should be on my doorstep tomorrow...wooohoooo. C'mon UPS!!!! Yea....a friend of mine is rubbing it in cuz he has his 40D, he did let me played with it for awhile. just gotta say, that thing is really good in comparison to the Mark 1Ds III, the only thing that the 40D doesn't have is the 45 AF points, After using my friends, i was wondering why my XTi shoots so slow :( , but hey i didn't give my right kidney to get one. I'm happy is when i do upgrade, i can interchange my lens to another canon so i don't have to spend mula on a new lens. OR i can start doing weddings, then i may probably start to afford upgrading and a reason for better equipment other than "this is my hobby not my profession" :D BillB 10-23-2007, 07:43 AM the only thing that the 40D doesn't have is the 45 AF points While the 40D looks like it has some neat technical upgrades, it is still a small sensor form and all lenses get the 1.6x focal point adjustment. For my money, and to get the most out of my investment in lenses, I am still looking to move from my Digital Rebel into a 5D. Prices still have not tumbled much in the first year the 5D has been out there, but I am hoping the introduction of this 40D may put pressure on Canon to drop the 5D a bit. Only thing working against me is that the 2 cameras are not really in competition as the 40D is being marketed to the Rebel upgrader - amateur/hobbyist while the 5D is being pushed toward the professional looking for a good light backup to their primary working 1 Series body or amateur/hobbyist with expensive lenses wanting true focal values out of them. jpphoto 10-23-2007, 07:44 PM Kanji I think you are mistaken. The BG-E2N battery grip for the 40D doesn't have wifi, or any of the connections you talk about. The BG-E2n battery grip holds 2 BP-511 batteries and has a vertical shutter release; thats about it. There is a WFT-E3A wireless transmitter available with the features you talk about, but it is not a battery grip. It does not hold any batteries. BG-E2N $209.95 at www.bhphotovideo.com WFT-E3A price is TBD I'm guessing at least a grand. B&H doesn't have a price yet and they usually have it before everyone else. Also just my personal opinion Don't buy the kit w/ the lens. The lens is barely workable, but you can get something 200% better for a little more money. Better Glass, better components and much better construction. Also you have to be REAL careful with those S type lenses they will not fit on any film cameras, 1d series cameras 5D or 10D,60D,30D digital cameras as their rear element will block and damage the mirror bongus 10-23-2007, 09:21 PM There is a WFT-E3A wireless transmitter available with the features you talk about, but it is not a battery grip. So far feels great. Time to take pics. kanji 10-23-2007, 10:46 PM Kanji I think you are mistaken. The lens is barely workable, but you can get something 200% better for a little more money. Better Glass, better components and much better construction. Your right about the kit lenses that Canon puts onto these "beginner" SLR cameras. When I first bought my Digital Rebel 5 years ago, I did not have any Canon lenses, so I went with the kit. After seeing the quality of the 18-55 EFS that came in the kit, and reading up on message boards about reasons why it appeared so bad, I knew I had to spend some $ to move to the quality I was used to in my old film equipment. It wasn't long before I had accumulated a serious investment in "L" glass and then it was pretty apparent that my Rebel was the weak link in my picture quality. Now it is time to spend some more $ to bring the camera part of my gear up to snuff and maybe if I am a good boy, Santa (me) will leave a 5D uder the tree this year.:D kanji 10-24-2007, 09:48 PM I'm wondering if the 5D will be upgraded soon with the new Digic 3 processor, rather than a small cmos, maybe with a full fram cmos Digic 3? Is that the only difference between the 5D and 40D? Bongus, so how's the new toy feels? takes some photo's to show and tell :D maybe a good shot of a sunrise or sunset. I too would be enjoying a new toy i.e. your 40D;) bongus 10-25-2007, 12:05 AM Is that the only difference between the 5D and 40D? There are other differences in features but in my opinion, the sensor size is the MAJOR difference. Bongus, so how's the new toy feels? takes some photo's to show and tell :D maybe a good shot of a sunrise or sunset. I too would be enjoying a new toy i.e. your 40D;) So far, so good. I want to take pics of the new wheels I got and the Signal Mirror install I did last weekend. I just have to find time to do it. I would prefer a day shot but it harder with the shorter days. But don't worry, I'll be ready to post. S2000 10-28-2007, 07:55 PM I have the 40D and it's worth the upgrade from the 30D (based on features alone) It's no contest between any of the Digital Rebels. Also, get the lens kit. You are getting it at a $100 savings. Sell it on ebay and pocket the $100. Tcape 03-28-2008, 07:40 PM I was a Nikon lover for years, but about 2 years ago, I got a Canon 350D (XT). LOVE that camera! The XTi was a good improvement, but the 40D is a masterpiece. The 40D comes with the Canon 28-135 IS lens, which is the lens I bought with my XT. Wonderful lens, and very versatile. Next up is the Canon 70-300mm IS telephoto lens. Want that one for my fall trip to Alaska. Anybody using this lens? Opinions??? Tom vpkb 03-31-2008, 12:01 AM Kit lens is not that bad. Grew up on Nikons and never thought I'd use a Canon until I tried this one... kanji 04-07-2008, 09:55 PM I still have my XTi, but may upgrade in the near future, been doing alot of networking with other photographers, learning from set up and framing the subjects especially lighting. Need to be more of a sponge and absorb all this great techniques. My XTi is good enough for the time being and may upgrade to a 40D or even the 5D in the near future. The one great thing is, i don't have to buy extra glass, after collecting from my Xti. craigger 04-08-2008, 01:21 PM I have the original Digital Rebel (300D/Kiss). I will be upgrading to the 40D. I was wondering if there are members currently using the 40D and what their opinions are on the camera. The 40D is a really sweet body. I'm sure you already know this, but the picture quality is all going to come from the glass. You can get a refurbished 30D for around $650 right now that has just about all the features of the 40D. Some nice lenses to possibly look at are the Canon 50mm/1.4, Tokina 12-24, both great bang for the buck. Also, force yourself to shoot manual - you'll end up taking much better pictures in the long run. -craigger. weather_wrangler 04-19-2008, 05:08 AM I just got the EOS 40D and it's surprising how well thought out the camera is. I have only used cheapie "drugstore" cameras up to now, so this is a HUGE leap for me! So far, I'm having nothing but success and the learning curve is not all that steep, even for a strictly amateur shutter bug. Some pics here: they are large size 3 meg jpegs for those with slow connections...Nothing special, just showing how the camera works right out of the box for an unfamiliar user... linky: photos taken with Canon EOS 40D digital camera - Windows Live SkyDrive (http://cid-fa9bbe05d1dc0702.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/photos%20taken%20with%20Canon%20EOS%2040D%20digita l%20camera) | |
