: Groaning/Creaking Noise when moving shift lever?
DesertRidgeline 11-09-2007, 03:21 PM This happens intermittantly and probably depends on how I physically move the shifter. But there are times when I move the shifter from park to drive that there is a groaning/creaking noise as Im moving the shifter lever. The noise is definitely Not coming out of the transmission or engine but rather from some sort of frictional situation with the shift lever itself.
If you have this, have you been able to get Honda to quiet it down a bit or not? I'd rather not lose my truck to the service department for a whole day to see if they can 1. duplicate the complaint and 2. actually do anything effective about quieting it down.
I searched the Honda ISIS system but didn't come up with any bulletins to help diagnose this problem so maybe it's just a fluke that mine creaks/groans when I move the shift lever arm.
Thanks,
djeaux 11-09-2007, 03:25 PM Are you sure you're moving the lever correctly? It's a kind of pull back/push forward motion. It took me a few days to figure it out & my salesman said some folks griped about it.
My secret way to avoid noises & rattles is to remove my hearing aids! :D

I turn the radio up, you'd be surprised how many annoying noises disappear. :)

That's a given on my 16 year old 525i with the amount of rattles, groans, and thumps that it makes, but I think I'd like to put that method off a while longer since the truck only has 1001 miles on it, it's probably not time for that method just yet.;)
I'm not sure how I could be using the shift lever wrong, I mean it does shift from Park to Drive so I assume I must be using it correctly and the same way that I've always used column mounted shift levers, but maybe theres a certain "method" to how this particular shift lever was designed to be operated that I don't know about.
Update It only makes the noise when going from Park to Reverse. From reverse to drive it's silent. It's like there is a rubber bushing in there somewhere that is ultra tight (probably to keep it from rattling ;) ) and it's causing the groan/creak noise from park to reverse on the shift lever.
HondaTech 11-10-2007, 10:37 AM I think you might be hearing the park pawl disengaging from the lock. The park pawl is what keeps the vehicle from rolling when in park.
Next time you drive somewhere try this -
Pull into the parking spot/garage and come to a complete stop.
With your right foot still on the brake - firmly set the parking brake
Shift to park.
Then when starting your next trip -
Start vehicle, foot on brake, shift to R, then release the parking brake.
This prevents the parking pawl from having any actual tension on it, making it easier to shift from P and hopefully quieter.

DesertRidgeline 11-10-2007, 10:43 AM Thanks but that's not it. I definitely know what that sounds like because my bmw makes that noise really bad even when using the parking brake before taking it out of drive.
HondaTech, maybe you have a service manual at your disposal that shows a blown diagram of the steering column shift lever area. Is there any rubber bushings in there that maybe hold the gear selector in the park position?
Tomahawk 11-10-2007, 07:16 PM My 2006 had the same thing, sounded like it was coming from behind and under the steering wheel or steering colum. I ended up spraying some WD-40 in that area, make sure you put something on the floor to catch excess and drips. Mine quieted down after a couple days. Hope this works for you too.
DesertRidgeline 11-10-2007, 07:44 PM Thanks for the suggestion. I think if it really starts to bother me (heck, it only happens when I shift from park to reverse so it's not like all the time) then I'll take it to the dealer and let them put some white grease on it in hopes that if that quiets it down, it will last longer and heck, let them just grease up the problem part instead of my attempt and likelyhood to spray everything in there which is likely not to be a good thing..
It seems to me however that it's most noticible when the vehicle has been sitting out overnight and it's cold, once the vehicle has had time to warm up in the sun, I havn't been able to get it to do it. This morning we went to the Dog Park early this morning and it was quite loud when it did it like a squeaking rubbing, groaning noise as I moved the shift lever to reverse. But after the truck had been sitting out in the sun for an hour or so, there was no noticible noise when moving the shifter.
Maybe I'll take it in on tuesday since the rear AC vent broke today and the little slider came off as I was trying to adjust the vent in the rear (another common problem IMO is those AC vents falling apart)

1001 miles!?
I think the sounds you hear are your RL's way of letting you know it's lonely, and trying to lure you away from the forums. ;) :p
Just Kiddin', of course... 8+ posts/day is an admirable thing!
You'll be in the comma club in record time!

I think Bigguy (or maybe it was Truckin'?) posted a technique to fix the little slider...
DesertRidgeline 11-10-2007, 08:19 PM I guess you all should be thankfull that I didn't get a used Ridgeline else I'd easily rival the most posted people around here like I did when I had my Nissan 280zx on the zx forums, within a month I had racked up several thousand posts.
Anyway, I'll search for the fix for the AC slider and see what it's all about, if I can avoid having to leave it with the dealer for a day and it's some kind of a perma-fix then i'd rather do that, then to have to keep going back to the dealer everytime that the slider comes off in my hands.
djeaux 11-10-2007, 08:25 PM Well, if you dig into fixing the AC vent & have the back of the console popped off, you may want to look at this mod, which I think is among the smartest ones I've seen:

(I'm planning to do a similar gig on the front power outlets -- I left them switched & modded the rear to unswitched...)
Doncha love us thread hi-jackers? :)

I really like the look of that and to be able to keep the phone cord out of view would be a really nice thing but i think I'll have to pass. Theres something about pulling off that back console myself and possibly breaking the tabs requiring me to have to spend money on buying a new panel that I think I'd rather avoid. Im better with a hammer and beating on cast iron or steel rather than things such as removing panels which I almost always break off clips. Which is one of the reasons I didn't go buy new speakers for the truck this weekend. I know I'll either break the clips in the door panels or somehow damage the door panels while trying to remove them like I did on the BMW last March.
But it sure does look nifty and would be an added bonus. Perhaps one day I'll tackle it, but with only 1001 miles on the clock, it doesn't seem like the right time to me.

Yup, that's the thread that I found in my search, thanks for taking the time to post the link. I wasn't able to get it to pop back on, but I don't have an extra set of hands to help me. I think I'd be best to take it to the dealer and let them worry about it, afterall the price of the truck includes the warranty, so I'll just have to make time to leave it with them one day and let them deal with the problem. Maybe they know of a permafix so that it doesn't pop off again.
It would seem to me if it pops off this easily (just sliding it gently) then perhaps the plastic is slightly deformed (or maybe it just wasn't every installed properly at the parts manufacturers factory) so they may need to actually replace the whole back console thingy so that it doesn't reoccur every 5th time that I slide the vent slightly.
Thanks for the help guys
Don't shoot your thanks to me... I'm just the messenger. ;) :p :D

Mine has done it for all of its 2,900 miles. No interest in letting the dealer address it. If they fixed that, then other things would start making noises.
