I've always liked humming bird shots. I tried to get some decent shots this past summer using my 50-500 Sigma (the Bigma). What do you think?

Hummingbirds are fascinating creatures. Nice pictures. I don't know a guy who doesn't like a hummer...sorry, you know it had to be said:D .

Wow those are incredible pics Hondafan. The hummers up here are ruby throated and we have gardens and feeders all over for them. Beautiful birds.

When I saw the title of this thread two things came to mind... neither of them had anything to do with birds.

Good pics though.

I second that. I was somewhat disappointed, and simultaneously ashamed.

cool pics! We have a feeder in our backyard, but haven't been able to "capture" any of them decently.

One trick is to use your flash. It's the flash that freezes the wings. Make sure you use a tripod.

Nice photos, I tend to like the blur of their wings though since it gives the illusion of action even with a frozen hummer but that is my personal taste

Beautiful shots. OK..now the details...what lens, settings, how close etc...Like I said, I tried all summer to get my shots but couldn't get in as close as you even with the 500mm. Yours are great.

Thanks. I woke up and it was 35F out and figured my days to catch any hummers were coming to a screeching halt if I didn't get some so I set my D2x up on the tripod (I use a Manfrotto 3251 B tripod with a Novoflex Q-ballhead and Q-base which allows quick disconnect of the Really Right Stuff L-plate on the D2x or the Kirk on the 300) and I mounted a Nikkor 300 AF ED IF f4 lens which has a Kirk L plate to the Q-base and set the tension for the weight which allows one hand use of the camera wherever I need it.

I set the whole thing up near my shed which is 6' from one of our Bee Balm gardens (the flower in the photo is Bee Balm) and with a pan and tilt I could move between 3 different Bee Balm gardens from 6' to 15' to 30'. ISO was 1250 using f4 and those shots were about 8' away. I use anticipatory photo shooting techniques, i.e. I get to a flower and focus and await the hummer to find it (doesn't always work though) I got the mother in 4 different poses the 2 I posted and 2 that had interference or not a good angle and I got one of her baby that waited while she fed about 15' away in the trees.

All photos are about an 80% crop and photo processing was just slight, i.e. adjusting light and sharpness +1 or so. The 300 is the sharpest Nikkor lens I own and a legend in wildlife photography, regards...............
