View Full Version : Hitch "steps / bumpers"
I guess that's the correct term ?
These are the attachments that slip in the receiver and provide a step / small bumper....
My question is, I'm looking at the model that's about 30" long but I can't tell from the web pics. how far they stick out from the stock bumper ?
Can anyone help ?
My garage is a little "tight" ... 'want to make sure the door will go down .
Thanks and Merry Christmas !

Most of the hitch steps I have seen are adjustable so that you have the ability to adjust the distance that they stick out. The one that I have has 3 holes that change the distance that it sticks out by about 4-5 inches. This is a pic of mine set at it's closest position.

Mine is about 6" from the back of the bumper. It isn't adjustable, but it is 36" wide. I went for the widest possible one to give my bumper the most protections I could get.

Our unit was manufactured for APC back in it’s day but I couldn't find it online anywhere. Here’s a few others; http://shopping.yahoo.com/s:Running%20Boards:48618-Type=Receiver%20Hitch%20Steps
Thanks for the pics. and comments.
I'm looking at the Rhino , 36" one. I'll double check the "garage". ( 6" may be tight ?)

This is the farthest out that I could get my Rhino 36" to be.

That's the one , K757.
It hard for me to "judge" ... what is the the measurement from the stock bumper to the outer most edge of the Rhino ? ( where you have it now)
Thanks, VTX

I got this one at realtruck.com and I thought that black step would accent the white truck...

I went a different route and got the Dolphin backup sensor / step. Much smaller, probably worthless as a bumper, works good as an extra step into the bed. Has a wireless receiver that provides backup sensor "beeping" up in the cab (simply plugs into a power outlet / cig lighter). Lots of other photos on the ROC...

I went with the wider hitch step as it provides a small amount of protection from people not paying attention and bumping me or while parallel parking. Plus when I back up now, I know I can go until I hit the rhino step and no bumper damage. :)

I have the BULLY step hitch. Don't use it much, just love the look on the back of the Ridgeline. Also, drives seem to stay back when driving.

So you don't want people bumping you...but you use the Rhino step to bump other people? LOL!
I had a neighbor when I lived in Charleston, older lady, drove a huge Cadillac. Whenever she parallel parked, she went until she hit the car in front, put in it reverse, hit the car in back, and then centered it up from there. People learned real quick not to park in front of her house. :) And it didn't matter if she had an extra ten feet...still hit both cars.

Yeah it looks all good just wait untill you smash your shin with a handful of grocery's. Mine is in the woods behind my neighbor's any major league baseball player would have been proud of that throw. :)

I meant that I backed into wall-backed spots until I maybe just barely touched the wall... or snow bank as it stands right now. If I have to back into a spot near other vehicles, it is way too congested, time to find a more secluded spot. :D

I like the concept of protecting the bumper but it seems like they would be very much in the way every time you wanted to lean over and get something out of the trunk.

Beaulieu -
I don't find that at all - but then I am over 6' tall. The step also provides another space to rest things against without scratching the painted bumper cover.

Perhaps the larger ones. The backup sensor version I have is no problem. The hitch on our Ody however is another story. Definite shin knocker.

I have an integrated BU sensor step and it helps especially when I ignore it and back into a snow bank...
