Daniel M. 12-26-2007, 09:26 PM Bought the latest offering in backup cameras from COSTCO.This one is a WINPLUS but it looks very much like the others. It has 5 buttons, has night vision and the camera can be tilted to get whatever view you want.
Installed it today and it was easy. The clips provided did not work to pick up power, but not a major problem.
I have one question. I would like to install the monitor in the Sun Glasses holder in the overhead as others have done, but when I put the monitor in the holder, I could not close it. The monitor appears to be just slightly larger than the holder. Are those of you who have done this been able to close the holder, or do you just leave it open?
The Winplus model I was researching has a 7" screen. I wouldn't think it would fit into the sunglass holder... what size monitor came with yours, what model no. did you get? Any other specifics for those of us who are on the fence about a wireless system?
thanks,
Pug
Daniel M. 12-26-2007, 11:21 PM Here is all I know about it so far.
Got it from COSTCO (I think it was $79 or $89).
Brand name is WINPLUS and no model number.
It has a 3.5 inch screen.
Went to winplus.com and it showed 3.5 and 7 inch screens. website has three vidieos. one for promo, one for camera install and one for monitor install. There is an operating manual also listed you can look at. It is the same one that comes in the package with the hardware. The model they show in the promo has the camera mounted on a bar that extends across the top of the license plate. Mine does not have the bar. Instead the camera is mounted on a U-shapped bracket that ia about 2 inches long and has stickey tape on the bracket for sticking to the back of the plate. Guess you could mount it anyplace on the plate you want. I put mine in the center.
Removed the passenger tail light and the wire was really easy to run and connect. Ran the antenna wire (about 6 feet long) to the drivers side to keep it away from the muffler and tail pipe.
Good picture with little to no interference. Tried it again after dark in the garage with no lights on to see how the night vision thing worked. Looked good.
Six Rails 12-27-2007, 02:01 AM Seems to be a lot of hype about the rear view camera is it a intercity thing ? Personally I don't see it being that great of an option or is it just another add on the ROC profile LOL. Knock on wood but I have never backed into anyone while parking.
ROC on Kevin :)
shovelhd 12-27-2007, 05:45 AM I can't live without mine (integrated in-dash).
Pizza Man 12-27-2007, 07:26 AM I can't live without mine (integrated in-dash).
How so, shovelhd? Is there a photo of your install somewhere in one of the threads?
shovelhd 12-27-2007, 07:30 AM It's in my signature, Pizza Man. Click on the link. I don't think I have any backup cam shots, though. The camera is integrated into the Kenwood HU and is triggered by the reverse lamp signal. Whatever programming is on continues to play but the video switches to the cam when the lever goes into reverse.
brutel1 12-27-2007, 08:55 AM I just got this also and haven't installed it yet. Did you hardwire the monitor? Did you hook the blue wire up so it turns on automatically?
Thanks.

Daniel M. 12-27-2007, 01:13 PM Have not hardwired the monitor yet. I would like to put it in the Sunglasses bin, but since I can't seem to close the bin with the monitor in it, I'm not sure I want to do that.
The installation in the overhead bin does not appear to be too difficult, thanks to the detailed information available from other ROC members. I guess I am waiting to hear from those that have already done this to see if they can close the bin or if they leave it open.
brutel1 12-27-2007, 01:35 PM Any issues or tips for the camera hookup?
Thanks,
Bruce
Daniel M. 12-27-2007, 02:22 PM The only issue that made me ponder for a few minutes was the placement of the wires comming out of the camera. The way the U-shapped bracket is configured, the sticky for attaching the braket to the back of the plate makes the plate "bow" slightly outward when the plate is reinstalled on the vehicle. I did not want to run the power wire and the antenna behind the plate in such a way that it could possibly be pinched. With the slight bow in the plate, it provides a good path for the wires to remain unpinched. I do not use a plate frame as it just does not fit well with the bumper. When you remove the plate there are two nice holes just to the left and right of center that make an excellent place to run the wires through the bumper.
As previously stated, the connectors that are provided did not work for me. I simply cut the two wires to the backup lights, stripped the ends and used crimp fittings to add the camera wires and rejoin the cut wires.
I could have done pictures, but it was just too darn cold!!
brutel1 12-27-2007, 02:37 PM Thanks. I was thinking of doing it on Christmas, but was too lazy. Now it's cold and wet and I'm kicking myself.... Same old story...

Thanks for the info, Daniel. I wasn't aware that there was a 6ft antenna wire that needed to be routed somewhere.
Good to hear that it's performing well for you.
After the initial correspondence with Winplus, I never received anything further about the "camera upgrade" that they'd mentioned. I hope that, by now, all the suspect camera units have been removed from the shelves and the "lens fogging" issues with this item are a thing of the past.
