: Rattles in cold weather
07 RTX 01-25-2008, 03:05 PM I am wondering something. My 07 RTX seems to have some rattles when the weather is cold and at night. For example..I have a rattle in my drivers side door and dash that sounds like a buzzing sound when I go over uneven pavement/rough surfaced roads. If its a sunny day even if its cold and the truck has been outside alot, its normally in the garage, the rattles seems to go away. Has anyone experienced this? Thanks advance
BillB 01-25-2008, 06:18 PM Lots of discussions throughout the forum about cold weather noises and all sorts of other physical and maybe psychologically caused noises. If you normally do not hear noises from unknown sources in your regular, non-Ridgeline driving life, then you can bet it is pretty normal that your RL is making them. If my RL suddenly goes quiet one day, which I doubt will happen, then I will go straight to the ear doctor for a check up.:D
ToyTruck 01-26-2008, 07:23 AM 07 RTX...................like BillB says there are lots of discussions regarding this. I use silicone spray where plastic meets plastic (virtually everywhere!). I had a cold weather creak that turned out to be where the passenger door armrest met the panel. If I pushed on it there was a loud groaning creak. Spray, wipe and voila,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,rattle gone. Happens with all plastic cars these days. Rode in a friends Ford truck yesterday and I could barely hear him talking over the racket inside!
I use silicone spray where plastic meets plastic (virtually everywhere!). I think I'll do that today.... I see it as a maintenance item such as oiling the door hinges
Be careful with silicone spray around polycarbonate and polystyrene pieces, especially. It'll break them down... bigtime.

I did solve my tweeter rattle problem today though

jimmychoi 01-26-2008, 06:04 PM The only place I hear anything is in the glovebox area....any suggestions to stop this that won't break down the plastic?

Since i was on a search and destroy for rattles today, I noticed that the glovebox handle has a rattle to it. Not sure how to fix that yet

This might be a similar fix to the tweeter cover. Have you tried putting some tape or weatherstripping temporarily around the opening? It may hold the lid away from the box enuff to make it a "snugger" fit.
The gap is probably a little wider during the winter months, to begin with, and having it "held out" by the extra padding might keep the handle from rattling, too.
Just a thought.

Just a thought.I thought that was the problem at first, so I held the drawer part snugly against the dash and lightly banged on it... still rattled. The rattle is the handle itself. granted it's a small rattle compared to the tweeter cover, but now you solve the big rattle and hear other things... I should have bought a Dodge Diesel, then I wouldn't hear anything! hahah

What I was trying to get across is the opposite... try "pulling out" on the lid and then tap on it, instead of holding it closer to the dash. The "catch" on the handle should grab more firmly if the lid is held out farther from the box, no? That's my oft-times-flawed reasoning, anyways... ;)

I didn't notice a difference in the noise I heard earlier (suspected glove box handle rattle), but I added a pad to the glovebox door where the little rubber stoppers are located, to add thickness, to increase the pressure on the latch when closed. No effect. I still believe the glovebox handle is the cause

OK... it's definately Gremlins, then!

No problems with the silicone on door/dash panels--different types out there. Some are more corrosive than others. Using "Liquid Wrench" brand. Done this on vehicles for years--never a problem.
Not necessarily the silicone that would harm the plastics... I meant the spray... the propellants and the "carriers" used... like propane, n butane, isobutane, trichloroethylene...
I'd watch that the sprays didn't contain any "harmful to plastics" ingredients, before spraying them into any places when you're not sure where they'd end-up, especially around anything optically transparent, i.e. polycarbonate will get a permanent "milky haze".
Styrenes will actually "melt" and "re-fuse" with nearby plastics.
Sorry for a similar lack of clarity in my previous post.

When I took my truck in for service a couple of weeks ago, I had this same rattle...very annoying. If I drove with the glovebox open...no rattle; Closed...big-time rattle. The service rep. said they fixed it by tightening/adjusting the glovebox latch. Looking at the latch I don't see how, but that is more than likely the source of your problem.

I have a glovebox rattle as well...I'm monitoring it to see if it gets any louder...
codda 01-29-2008, 08:30 AM Count me in on the glove box as well... Only when cold...I can live with it as is if it doesn't get any worse.

open the glove box
on the open part, you'll see two little screws sitting right there
loosen the screws. (I actually took the screws out to examine the latch hardware, nothing to tighten there)
pull up on the latch mechanism OR if you are sitting in the passenger chair, pull the latch mechanism towards you
While holding the mechanism tight (see previous step), tighten the screws
Enjoy your non-rattle!
