: windshield washer woe
Don-T 02-10-2008, 08:41 AM Firstly, I'd like to congradulate you all on a fine site. Secondly, in introduction as a newby, I just brought home an 06 RTL with only 15k miles that I traded an 06 Tacoma on and I'm in Wisconson and it's cold up here!
Love the truck thus far but I missed noticing that the windshield washer doesn't squirt when I got it. Checked the fuse okay. Other than poking a wire down the squirters, anything else I should check? Dealer is a long way off.:(
Just so someone else doesn't ask, I will: Is there fluid in the tank?
OK, with that out of the way, all I can think of is possibly a kinked hose? Maybe someone knocked an electrical connector loose at the pump?
northernlights 02-10-2008, 09:05 AM First make sure fluids topped off. Ive used my compressor to flush out plugged lines in other cars. Maybe its just cheap fluid thats frozen in it? -19 here this morning to.
Andy-Montreal 02-10-2008, 09:39 AM Hey Don-T, welcome to the ROC!
If the reservoir is full and you cannot hear the washer pump motor function (buzzing sound towards the front-right of the car when depressing wash button), check to see if the 7.5A fuse (No.20) in your under-dash fuse box is blown.
As both Rib and Northernlights commented, sometimes the easiest solution to a problem may be the most obvious to detect.
Don-T 02-10-2008, 10:12 AM Yeah, first thing I did was top off the fluid (maybe 3 ounces) and check the fuse. I'm afraid I don't hear the expected buzz from the washer motor though. :( If it ever gets above zero here, I quess I need to chase wiring and hoses.
CUinaRidge 02-10-2008, 11:05 AM Driving between the Civic and RL lately I got confused on the RL washer...
I forgot the RL has the button push on the end of the stalk !!
I kept twisting for mist....
Since were on the wiper topic I have found if you just tap the button fluid pumps without a wipe. Hold for longer than a second or two and it will wipe.
:)
dougwtx 02-10-2008, 01:55 PM Have a heated garage or wait for a warmer day to make sure lines are not frozen. Mine didn't start working until it got over 30 degrees and then I filled the tank up with better fluid. My dealer put cheap or watered down washer fluid in mine. Its probably my hearing, but I can't really hear a buzz or noise when I push in the button for the washer fluid; or at least from inside the cab.

It could be that your RL was assembled in Germany. Post-war VW beetles used an air pump which drew it's "power" thru the spare tire. No motors, no fuses, no wiring but simple air. Oh yeah, the odd time you'd take a shower if the steering wheel stalk's rubber seals leaked but hey, what else do you expect from a car with no heating!:D
Seriously speaking, Honda's pump is a quiet one but nevertheless can be heard just the same; but only if you lower the volume of track 1 from CCR's "chronicle" CD....:p :D

If I turn down the volume, I hear my dash speaker panels rattle and my steering wheel make creaking sounds. :) Its those sound systems that led to my hearing loss... back in my young days when credit was open, 0.5ohm and 1ohm cheater amps were in with minimal distortion and high spl's and db's..... oh, the good ole days.
ZowieK 12-19-2008, 12:44 PM MY RL got the same problem. Fuse is fine, tank is topped off. No sound, no washer, no nothing. Bring it to the dealer is the best thing?
ZowieK 12-19-2008, 02:33 PM Honda's e-store had a diagram for washer area on their website.
https://estore.honda.com/asp/logon.asp?bhcp=1
You have to type in your zip, then select a dealership, then check out the windshield washer area.
northdog 12-14-2009, 06:09 PM I am also having issues with my washer not working. Checked the fuse and it is fine. No noise but just a click sound when I press the wash button. It is just around 0 Celsius here in Vancouver right now. Not sure what fluid was in the reservoir but it has now been topped up with about 75% winter fluid. No heated garage but will wait a few days for some warmer temps and see if that might sort things out. It was working a few days ago and did have fluid in it the entire time...although it may have been summer stuff in there.
Any other advice out there?
Yeah, use 100% washer fluid. It's 99 cents a gallon most places and I can't see why anyone would cut it with water except a stealership trying to grind every last cent out of their customers. You can even get the super cold weather stuff for those really cold days. If your washer fluid freezes it's best to thraw it as soon as possible because expanding water will crack the plastic parts in the pump and can split the hose. Pour hot water over the tank several times and when it starts to thaw add more pure fluid until it all melts. I live in northern Virginia and we get this all time. I had to replace the whole washer asembly on my daughters Nissan because goober at the local gas station filled the washer tank with water 2 summers ago.
northdog 12-14-2009, 11:50 PM Thanks Jack,
I certainly hope it is just a summer fluid issue and not a broken pump because I'm sure the stealership would want a large sum to put a new one in.
Cold.2 12-15-2009, 05:21 AM Don't you Canadian residents have that super wickid awesome wiper fluid that never freezes?
Isn't there also some sort of bug emulisifier in it also??
thefinks13 12-15-2009, 05:30 AM best bet is the cheap stuff they sell in walmart for bugs and road grime a buck a bottle...but now get the one for winter i use and never freeeezes up.

Some of us use this stuff although it costs a tad more than $0.99/gallon.:act024:
thefinks13 12-15-2009, 10:51 AM think you could send some of that across the border. looks like thats what im missing all this time. had no idea.:act027:
northdog 12-15-2009, 02:57 PM Well it warmed up here today to 5 Celsius and guess what????
Washer works again. I think that there is enough winter fluid in the lines but I'll throw a bottle of methyl alcohol in there to help. Maybe even an ounce or two of Canadian Club 12 yr to top it off for Any-Montreal.
Happy times...fun times.

Damn right my man! A few drops in your baby's formula also and he/she will sleep like a....baby!;)
I will certainly raise a glass of 12-year old CC to you this christmas..sir!:hol005::D

You guys south of the border can shame us up some with those tasty single-malts that we don't have up here. Please don't get me started....:o
Cold.2 12-15-2009, 08:40 PM joking aside,,, isopropyl will work too
hiPSI 12-16-2009, 05:55 AM If you guys are up in the great white north a heat blanket (not the one people use in their beds at night) will work to unfreeze the washer tank. They should be pretty common as most heavy equipment uses them for hydraulic tanks and things.
jimmychoi 12-18-2009, 06:04 AM I have the same problem today....lines are frozen...I'm hoping that it warms up enough for the lines to thaw. I will probably go get some "winter" fluid.
