SRQRIDGE 03-09-2008, 08:36 PM A couple of questions:
1.Can you still use the Bed extender at the rear of the Bed with the Retrax? Considering down the road if it will still work.
2. I remember reading a post/thread about someone making a prop to hold the trunk open, and I can't find it? Since the trunk doesn't open all the way, someone made something and had the measurements.
Tcape 03-10-2008, 10:28 AM Several members posted ideas for a trunk prop. My solution was to use a piece of 3/4" PVC pipe 30" long. (Length can be shorter or longer, as you wish.) I painted the PVC black, and put black crutch tips on each end. I got the crutch tips at Wal-Mart for about $3. The prop stores in the trunk next to the spare. Works great.

Pizza Man 03-10-2008, 10:51 AM Tcape seems to have addressed your Item #2.
I seem to remember reading here on the ROC that the Bed Extender can be used with the Retrax installed. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Remember, the Extender can only be used on the Tailgate end of the bed due to the Retrax cannister under the rear window. This eliminates the alternate Extender location on the cab side of the bed.
Installing the Extender by the Tailgate would make access to the trunk difficult. I assume you intend to use the Extender only when required and remove it when not in actual use to maintain access to the trunk.

YES! I have the bed extender with a BakFlip and it works just fine; however, you are correct that the bed extender must be removed (only takes a few seconds) and the BakFlip folded open twice in order to access the trunk. btw, the bed extender fits under the BakFlip with the tailgate closed & bed extender folded forward with nary a problem, so I'm pretty certain that the same would hold true for just about any of the tonneau covers (except, of course, for the "rollup" covers due to their canisters). Hope that this helps.
ExF150Driver 03-10-2008, 01:09 PM I have a Retrax and just purchased a used bed extender. As mentioned by the folks above the bed extender cannot be mounted in the forward postion.
When mounted in the rear postion you cannot "flip" a stock Honda bed extender from being in the bed to the tailgate or vice versa. The Retrax rail on the drivers side has a plastic post that is there to keep the Retrax cover from sliding all the way out of the rear end of the rails. Without modification to the extender you can mount it facing into the be or out onto the tailgate you just cannot flip it on the pivot between the two positions.
I made a simple modification to my extender so that I can flip it. I takes about $3.00 of hardware from the local home improvement center and a can of black spray paint if you are so inclined. Making the modification is about a 30 minute job... no big deal.
If you are interested let me know and I'll post info on the required modifications.
I based my modification on a picture posted by another forum that showed a modified bed extender but did not list the parts reuired or how it was done. I would link to the post but I just did a quick search and did not see it.

You can definitely "flip" the Honda bed extender with a BakFlip installed!
ExF150Driver 03-10-2008, 01:48 PM I found the original post showing pictures of the modification.
Retrax modification (http://www.ridgelineownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5499&highlight=retrax+modification)
Again the modification is simple. I can post a how to guide if pictures if anybody needs it.
With the modification the bed extender is about 1 inch narrower on the drivers side to clear the Retrax post and pivots just fine.
PS I painted my modification unlike the linked pictures. You don't even notice the change on my truck unless you are looking for it.
dsbhunter 03-11-2008, 01:39 PM OK, with modifications the bed extender can be flipped on the retrax. What about with the FMJ from Pace?
Does anyone have a FMJ and a bed extender that can comment?

Great idea. I had to buy a 5' section of PVC, the smallest size they sell. Will need to cut to size. I guess I will have an extra one. Cost $1.57. Black crutch tips from Walmart $2.20. Total cost $3.77. Great idea!! Maybe will paint later.
Thanks

I bought a size too small of the crutch/Caine tips. Rats!! I needed to make another trip to Super Walmart. They didn't have a larger size, so I made a trip over to Hardware dept. salesman suggested Rubber Chair tips. 1" fits perfectly on the 3/4" PVC. They were a pack of 4 and price was even lower than the Crutch/Caine tips. So I now have two 30" prop's, since i had to buy 5'(60") of PVC. Don't know what I will do with two? If anyone is the Sarasota area, I will give you the extra. It will save you the running around. Send me a PM if interested or I will have a backup.
SRQRIDGE 02-26-2009, 08:00 PM I don't why I didn't think of it sooner. I had my truck prop at 30" and it was hard working around it proped in the trunk, so I cut down to about 23" and if fits in the corners better and takes up less space.;)
I have the retrax bed cover installed but the trunk lid stays up by itself so no need for a prop. Just wondering what the difference could be.
