methodtim 08-17-2005, 12:30 PM Hello T-Mac,
I would like to request a minor cosmetic change to this site. I probably should have PM'ed you with this, but I wanted to open it up for discussion as well. I would like you to replicate the top link banner (you know the one that shows us which sub-forum we are in and contains the links to UserCP, FAQ, New Posts, etc.) to the bottom of the page as well. The reason I'd like this is that every time I'm done reading a thread page, I then have to navigate up to the top of the page to get back to the main forum page, or new posts, etc. Ideally, I like to configure my forum display to display the maximum number of posts allowed so that I don't have to navigate through multiple pages; however, with the current layout, I have to make the number of posts per page the minimum amount because it's killing me to have to scroll up to the very top to navigate back.
Note: Before anyone says "use your back button" - this isn't an elegant solution when you have just replied to a post and then have to scroll back through your reply and then to the main page.
This is just a minor request in an otherwise fabulous site. Please don't take this as criticism or complaining. I just thought having the main navigation links at both top and bottom would enhance the user experience. Keep up the good work. Thanks for reading.

I like the idea!!
shovelhd 08-17-2005, 12:42 PM I do too, but the Home key works for me.

Thanks Shovelhd! I did not know that. You just saved my scrolling finger a couple million rotations of the wheel.
T Mac 08-18-2005, 09:14 PM I'll check into it for you. ;)
Truckin' 08-19-2005, 12:55 AM MethodTim, good on ya for posting this. I PM'd T-Mac with this very request a couple of weeks ago and didn't hear anything about my idea. That part is fine. I know T must be busy. I didn't need a personal response and I've been waiting around hoping that it would appear one of these days. I think I remember reading that there was a website upgrade in the works.
I recently discovered the key combination on my laptop that takes the page back to the top without scrolling or going page up multiple times. That's helped, but I'm like you, I'd rather jump to the next new topic from the bottom of the page.
BannedUser 08-19-2005, 06:17 AM I do too, but the Home key works for me.
Hey big guy...you're pretty smart. Especially since you are in MICKEY MOUSE LAND!!
methodtim 08-19-2005, 04:06 PM I'll check into it for you. ;)
Thanks T! :D
As shovelhd stated, the home key is a very "elegant" way to get you where you want to be. One "DOINK" and you're there!! Might as well get your money's worth out of that key. ;)
T Mac 08-19-2005, 09:25 PM Sorry if I'm not quick on actual responses, gang. I do read everything and many times the requests go on a "to do" list. Just trust that it got to the right place and I'm hearing your requests. Between ROC, EOC, and personal email (not counting work), I get 75-150 emails a day so I do my best to respond to those I think require it and bank/save those that don't necessarily need one. When things aren't busy (and that's not often for me), I reply to everyone, if possible.
So, I'm doing my best now and will continue to always do so. Thanks!
flymuck 08-21-2005, 10:14 AM It also would be nice to be able to search just by date, without having to put in addition search parameters... I haven't quite figured out what qualifies as a "new post", so sometimes the logic decides to knock off some things that I haven't read yet if I hit the "new posts" link again... generally, to go back to "new posts" without having it recalculate, I use the down-arrow next to the back key (which is also handy to use when you've posted a reply and don't want to hit "back" three times to get back to the main list).
In general, though, this really is one of the finest websites out there. Easy to use, attractive, and highly functional. Nice job, developers! :)
methodtim 08-22-2005, 09:56 PM I do too, but the Home key works for me.
File this under the "made me feel so stupid I couldn't bear to admit it until now" category: This post made me look and look (and look) INSIDE the site interface for the "Home" key. I actually got very upset for a little while because I couldn't find said key. Then I looked on my keyboard.... Duh...
SixOpRidge 08-23-2005, 06:04 AM That's the funniest thing I've heard in awhile :D I can just picture myself doing the same thing...almost made me spew coffee through my nose!

heh-heh! Talk about ironic!
I found this thread by accident at the bottom of the page where the thread-poster/methodtim asked to be "the links to UserCP, FAQ, New Posts, etc."
It made me scroll up and down to see if anything had come to fruition.
(duh... I didn't use the "Home" hint I'd just learned about)
It didn't. In the chosen form, anyways.
And, although it hasn't been posted, (at least not that I know of and certainly not in this thread) I think I know why there isn't a link to UserCP, FAQ, New Posts, etc... at the bottom.
Besides there being a <TOP> button at the bottom of the page (to take you to the top), not too unlike methodtim's "HOME" button he searched for on the page...

... there are ads by Google down there! And we all know that NOoNE messes with Google these days!
methodtim's faux pas doesn't seem so "laffable" now, does it? :p
Here's to you, methodtim! You were being brilliant, and didn't even realize it!
A final bit of irony could have been the "piece de resistance" if T Mac chose to rename the page's <TOP> button.... <HOME> ! :D
BTW T Mac, thanks for the button, however it's called. I too, was developing a "ridgeline" on the tip of my middle "scroll wheel" finger! :)
I suppose now at a meet and greet, we could all from this thread, raise our middle-fingers to one-another, and only we would know the irony involved.
...or not.
Truckin' 04-20-2006, 08:51 PM I don't know how long the bottom blue tool bar has been on the pages. Maybe it's been there all along and I just never went below the similar suggested topics. I don't have a "home" key on my laptop keyboard without using both hands. I have to hold down the function (fn) key on the bottom left corner and then hit my left directional key on the bottom right of my keyboard. That's better than scrolling up or going page by page. It was just a few days ago that I discovered the TOP button in the lower right corner of the forum pages. Now I can page down one more time with my space bar and hit it. No more two handed combinations.
Still I would love to see the "New Posts" category added to that bottom tool bar. It's my most common selection in the top tool bar and it could send me to where I'm headed without the need to go back up. I don't believe I've ever gone into "Archive." I guess I'll try it and see where it takes me. I did and it seems like a redundant function. Why not just go into the forums page? "New Posts" would get a lot more use down there, I'm sure.

Just a question on this, isn't that what the forum jump box is for? :)
T Mac 04-22-2006, 05:12 PM Note: this feature was added today. Check the footer of each page to see. :)
Thanks everybody. Have a super weekend!
Truckin' 04-22-2006, 10:24 PM Note: this feature was added today. Check the footer of each page to see. :)
T-Mac, could you be specific about what feature was added today? I don't know what I'm looking for as nothing looks different to me. I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering about what "this" is.
T Mac 04-22-2006, 10:49 PM If you scroll to the bottom of the page, there is now what is referred to as "breadcrumbs" for navigation back up from where you started - just as you see at the top of the page when you click a category, then a thread title, etc.

Cool T Mac!
This REALLY makes it easy for me. I was always going to the top of the page in order to click back "in the tree" of pages where I'd been because simply clicking my <BACK> button didn't automatically refresh the page that I was returning to. Using the tree takes you to the page as it is NOW, without having to click REFRESH every time. And I'm still on dial-up, so....
Having this on the bottom is really a cool innovation. Thanks for your insight.
Frank
