Had to drop off my truck to get a remote start put in last night and was decidely uneasy about leaving my shiny new truck in a less than ideal part of town. Out of curiousity, I started snooping around google for GPS trackers. (No LoJack in Northern Alberta.)

Came across a few different devices, but the one that seemed to stand apart from the rest was the GPS Snitch (http://gps-snitch.com/). I'm frankly a cheap bugger, and monthly service fees annoy me. This one starts at $10 / month, which looks to be as low as it gets. ;)

Anyone out there actually seeen one of these in action?

On my day job, we use a similar product for tracking packages that contain sensitive information when we use a courier. When we were testing them, I clipped one to my Lil Bro when we went to NYC for the day. It tracked us very well while we were on the way to & from the city, but in the city itself, it lost view of the satellites many times. And of course, it dropped off the map entirely the minute we went into a subway.

I'm not permitted to mention the name of the service we use, but it isn't that one, and is a bit more expensive.

The non-stop big buildings are like going down into a cavern. When in Manhattan, my Garmin nuvi350 told me I was going down the street sideways (ala drifting I suppose), then took the next two blocks backwards while traveling at 30 mph. I guess I am better than I thought. :D I would imagine that the buildings cause havoc to all manufacturers

You Northerners (Canadians) get a better deal on the GPS Snitch's monitoring - it starts at $14.95/month in the States. I too investigated a bunch of GPS monitoring devices; the Snitch looks like the best. I'm currently paying $9.99/month for Sprint's Family Locator service, which is nice 'cause I have multiple phones on my account, but Sprint's accuracy leaves a lot to be desired. It tracks the phone(s) I'm looking for, but most of the time it shows "accurate within 57 yards". Occasionally it will show a huge shaded circle on the map (indicating the area the phone could be in) and show "accurate within .8 of a mile". That's not accurate enough for me, so I figure for $5.00 more a month I can get much more accurate locations plus get the "early warning" (motion detecting) feature of the Snitch. I like the fact that I don't have to install it in a particular vehicle, too.

I just ordered the Snitch last week; hasn't arrived yet. I'll post back after using it for a while.

For some reason, my Garmin loses signal when I'm uptown:confused: When I've been downtown, I haven't lost any signals...

I've got a little Gisteq GPS Phototracker thingy. Itis only about 2"x1.25"x1" in size, activates on motion, and is incredibly sensitive. It will not give you real time info, but when you get it back you could download the track and see where your truck went.

I'm sure if you are taking it to a reputable place here in Calgary you shouldn't have to worry about your truck.
