Hi SoCal ROC'ers,

I have been so busy since getting back from the Sedona Meet, I almost forgot to post this thread about the Day Run to Santa Maria, CA on Saturday, July 19, 2008 for wine tasting and Santa Maria Style Barbecue!

If you have never had Santa Maria Style Barbecue, you are doing your taste buds an injustices! ;) There is no sauce involved and it is mouthwatering, somebody pass me a bucket! :D I am going to research a vineyard we can go to for wine tasting if you wish to do so however, I will need a definite head count to make reservations for say an early dinner?

Santa Maria is 3 hours up the coast from Long Beach. All those who wish to attend, we can all rendezvous at Point Magu in Ventura with a second rendezvous location in Santa Barbara at In and Out Burger. From there we will caravan the rest of the way to Santa Maria from there (radioes on 6.0). So if you are interested in joining me (because I am going either way) answer the poll please so I can get a head count. Wine tasting info will be posted by the weekend.

Let's roll SoCal!

Is there a second rendezvous for the people who lives further north like myself (kanji), kelly (Ridgegal), Dreshden etc. like ventura area where the 126 meets the 101 or something in that area? Rather for some like myself, back tracking?

Btw...when will this day trip happen? or is it still in the planning stages?

Do what you think is best for those who live that far North Tony, I would! I am looking at suggestions from Grok Lobster on wineries in S.B. County prior to reaching Santa Maria.

just wondering if we can meet the rest of the caravan, on your way up, if everyone likes we (other's) can meet at Ventura or Santa Barbara and Drive up in one large caravan together.

Create waypoints for people to meet in sections of the drive the scenic routes.

That was always the plan Tony. It does not make sense for us to go out of our way to rendezvous when we can all meet at a way point then travel together don't you think?

For example I would expect to meet up with Ridgegal some where around Camarillo where the 101 comes out of L.A. County into Ventura County if she took the 101.

There may be at least 2 to 3 way points before we all rendezvous and head for a winery then on to Santa Maria. Lord knows on the way back home we will take the routes that get us home the quickest, which I suspect would be in Ventura where you are thinking of meeting the main group then Camarillo.

The last time I was up that way, the In and Out was right off the freeway in plain sight. But you can research any location where your freeway connects with US 101 and rendezvous with us there. You make the call!

On the advice of a dear friend, instead of doing a winery especially because some like wine , others don't or can't enjoy wine, we will go to Solvang for a bit. They have a lot going on there and it's fun for all. We then head over to Santa Maria (Guadalupe) for an early dinner then trek home. ;) For all those going, make sure you vote on the poll and post a head count on who is coming so I can make reservations for dinner by July 17, 2008!

Since you are going to Solvang, you definitely want to take highway 154 which means you won't get to the In and Out exit. The exit for 154 is about 1/4 mile from 154 with a small strip mall (on Calle Real) along the way. You could make that your rendezvous point.

There is wine tasting available in Solvang.

Good Call Grok. Kanji we will meet you and who ever comes with you there!

Tony, Goggle Earth these directions for yourself and whom ever comes out of the high desert with you for the way point at Highway 126 (Santa Paula Freeway) and the 101 (Ventura/PCH)....

Once the 126 merges with the 101, take the East Main St. exit going North, to South Mill Rd. We will meet at the AM/PM Gas station or what ever is there. Once those who are going with us have arrived and stretched their legs, we will depart that location headed north on the 101 to the 154 north. We will turn west bound on the 246 (Mission Drive) into Solvang.

From Solvang, we will continue west bound on the 246 to the north bound 101 into Santa Maria. We will then turn West bound on the 166 which goes through town into Guadalupe until we come to Cabrillo Hwy (Coastal Route 1). We will proceed north bound on Route 1 to the location for dinner.

That is hard to determine since we are coming from different directions. However, if we all hit the road at 0700 sharp, we should all be within a few minutes to 20 or 30 minutes arriving at the way point. Plus we will have our radios and cell phones.

Would you consider this 2nd waypoint, The corner of East Main Street and South Mills Road is Lowe's, it has plenty of parking and right off the freeway. Here's the lowe's address for the people with Navi.

500 SOUTH MILLS ROAD
VENTURA, CA 93003

Its practically right across from the gas station.

Tony, I'm going out on a limb and say I'm going at this point.

Just got back yesterday from a long drive around Oregon and have reservations at Doheny State Beach for July 9th thru the 13th.
Kinda tired of packing and unpacking but never too tired to drive. :)

It looks like I'll have a few days rest for the all day drive to Santa Maria on July 19th.

I think I read in another post that you need a head count for dinner by the 17th.
I will know more by then and confirm.

Hello SoCal ROCateers!

I had a very nice Saturday after a hell of a Friday after work! I picked up my friend, retirement planner and co-worker Stacie and hit the road for Ventura and breakfast at Denny's with Joe, Joyce, Anthony and Alex. Sorry the rest of the SoCal ROC regulars could not attend with us. You were missed.

It was a bit overcast but not a bad thing. After breakfast, we headed N/B 101 to the 154, a back way into Solvang. We spent a couple of hours walking and shopping and taking in all the sites.

We hit the road about 3:00 and and took the coast highway (CA 1) into Guadalupe. Alex took us on a little detour to Guadalupe Beach. I have to say, I have been to that area about 4 to 5 times since 1996 and I ever realized that the beach was as close as it was!

We got there and with my strong sense of observation, I realized this was not your ordinary beach. it looked very undisturbed. According to the ranger, the beach between February and October was sectioned off and prohibited to public access for 2 species of endangered birds during their nesting period.

We also found out that the movies G.I. Jane, Hildago, and Pirates of the Caribbean 3 were filmed on this stretch of beach. It was time to leave for dinner so we mounted up and drove to the Far Western Tavern for what I had been waiting for for 3 months! I was in LAMB CHOP HEAVEN! My waitress said I had the biggest rack she had ever seen! Rack of lamb guys!

I was pleased that my guest enjoyed their food as much as I did. We then got on the coastal highway headed home and parted company at the 101 freeway and Coastal Highway split in Oxnard. I made it home after dropping of Stacie at 10: 45. I was staring at my eyelids by 11:10.

I took pictures at breakfast and dinner but I sent them to Kanji to arrange and put together with the ones he took. All in all, it was a nice day trip with friends and food. I'm glad we did it. :D

Tony, we had a great time yesterday.
Here are a few photos in the meantime.

Didn't know we were going to do some off-roading.

Alex (alexander) - Thanks for the awesome side trip to Guadalupe Beach.

Part of bird sanctuary at Guadalupe Beach.

Photos are not real good - took them all (on-the-fly) through RL glass windows.

wow, i did miss a good place to shoot. Maybe next time, had to swing by a few other places in Santa Barbara before going home, the water look soo cold and inviting to swim, i had to take a quick dip in the PO, luckly i brought my wetsuit with me. That water was cold, and the sun was not in sight, BRRrrrr. Its a good wake up call, maybe we can do a meet at Guadalupe state beach or something and have some fun in the sand with bonfire in the evening, and bring out the smores :D

Finished my lil show....with all the pictures. Its just a simple show, since i have a bunch of projects I have to do, and squeezed this in to get it out. Enjoy.
