yorkie 06-11-2008, 06:46 PM Hello everyone, i am a new member and this is my first thread....i am wanting help already...what a loser !.
I recently put a deposit on a Ridgeline in the USA and i hope to have it back in Montreal soon.I have trouble solving a few problems so any help from you lot would be great.
I have my Recall letter and that's it so far. I understand the title will be signed over to me and that is fine. The 2 big problems are getting a transit plate for the USA and then one for Canada after crossing the border.
Also if anyone can suggest a place for reasonable insurance and advice on getting it before registering the vehicle in Canada.
I am trying to be patient but i can't wait to get behind the wheel.
Thanks in advance for your help.... a ridgeline owner to be !
just4fun 06-11-2008, 07:10 PM Hi Yorkie,
Welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately I can't answer any of your questions because...
a. when I looked at importing a vehicle from down south I was planning on having it frieghted accross the border, not picking it up and driving it back. Although I have heard of people driving vehicles back, so there must be a way to go about it.
b. being from a different province, insurance and registration requirements are possibly quite different.
Just a curiosity question though, did you research warranty coverage on the imported Honda?
The reason I ask is because I was looking at the Ridge stateside, but was informed by Honda that Honda Canada will not honor the warranty on any vehicle imported from the states. New or used. Just wondering if you received the same info.
I ended up buying locally, based mostly on the warranty uncertainty.

boobai 06-12-2008, 07:01 AM If the previous owner transfers the warranty Honda has to honour it for that owner (and keep it registered under that owner for Honda's records).
Call TD Melloche Monnex or any company and just give them the vehicle VIN#, they gave me 7 days free insurance.
If you have the ownership, well in Ontario, you can go and get a 14 day temporary trip permit/plate, or in NY, you can go to the MOT/DMV and get a 30 day permit. I drove around with that 30 day permit no problems in Ontario.
pennery 06-16-2008, 04:36 PM I drove around for a few weeks on my temporary permit as well.. I bought form a dealer in the US and they issued me permit there and as long as you have insurance (I just called my insurance broker) you can get one in Canada if the US one expires.. It is easy just go get it... Make sure you give US Customs 72 Hours notice...
yorkie 06-16-2008, 07:03 PM I am still trying to get the transit plate for the US, thanks for all your replys by the way. I hope to go down and get it this weekend, plate pending. Can a NY plate be issued on a Conneticot title ????? Oh need the insurance too !!
SmokinJoe 10-23-2008, 08:22 PM Hi all. We just brought our RTL into Ontario from West Virginia last month. Used car dealer gave us a 30 day trip which is good anywhere. The truck was titled in Maryland by the way. Make sure you have the title faxed to the border you are crossing back on. Minimum 72 hours prior to bringing truck back. Or your not bringing it back. Also right the VIN on a copy of the title prior to faxing and most importand is keep the transaction record and bring with you as proof just in case. Insurance info I had to send them prior to issue of the 30 day tag.
Most important info to remember is find out the exact hours your border crossing point is open. They are not all the same. at our time of crossing only Detriot was 24/7 but lots of construction in area made it hard to find even with a GPS. Port Huron and Buffalo are not open on the weekends or evenings. We crossed over in Buffalo but returned through Detroit just in case our timing was off. Added an extra hour to our drive but didnt mind in our new Ridgeline.
Best of Luck and dont fret. Border people I found were great to deal with.
Joe.
Benedict 11-17-2008, 08:42 PM heres a question for you guys..
I bought a Ridgeline from a car dealer here in Halifax. They had brought it in from Florida. It has a fresh safety inspection on it. The truck is mint, nothing wrong with it at all, but I noticed now (after owning it for a week) that my daytime runners are non-existant. Obviously, being a US truck, it didnt have them.
My question is that if they brought the truck across the border, shouldnt they have HAD to put the DRL's on the truck before they put a safety or received the papers for it?
Just curious. Im thinking I might have to go back to them and make them install daytime running lights (not that I care) but it will only be a hastle for me down the road with future safety inspections and checkups of the truck by the dealer.
boobai 11-18-2008, 04:09 PM Sounds funny. In Ontario we need a green ownership slip from the Ministry. That slip isn't issued until the imported vehicle is inspected and passed by Canadian Tire.

Day Time Running Lights are not an actual set of lights that are put on the vehicle. It is a relay and some wires that make your headlights turn on when the vehicle is started. So start your truck and go see if the lights are on. They would not be able to register it or pass inspection without having done that.
Franks 11-18-2008, 04:58 PM I bought my truck in Canada from a Honda dealer, it came from the USA with the understanding that any warranty was nul and void.

Sorry I miss read your post, thought you were talking about having another set of lights installed.
Take it back to the people you bought it from, they probably did the job but it must have a loose wire or something.
sjspat 11-19-2008, 12:03 PM Hi, I just bought my 07 RTL in Maine a couple of weeks ago and the only thing i had to do when I got home was to hook up DRL's for the safety inspection and this is required also for Transport Canada as a safety measure.
The dealer you bought it from should have had the DRL's working before you bought your truck.
Go back and tell him you want it done or visit your registration dept.
