: Katrina
Kellcut 08-28-2005, 05:47 PM This looks like a scary scary storm.
Hope that any ROC members in the path are safe and sound as well as everyone else. Many thoughts and prayers to them all.
It will make the next few weeks interesting as far as gas prices go. There are lots of refineries in the path. Scary stuff.
Spritegeezer 08-28-2005, 06:15 PM I hope everyone can find a safe "hidey hole" to ride this one out. Those people in Louisiana are going to need a great deal of our help to recover from this one. I think all our prayers are with them.
T Mac 08-28-2005, 06:31 PM As one reporter pointed out earlier today, this storm doesn't affect just those down on the coast. This will affect everyone as we'll see even higher gas prices and prices on other items as a result of this. That's not something I'm looking forward to at all.
That being said, I'm thankful (now) to be in the boring Midwest, safe in my house with my wife and kids resting peacefully. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in the path of the storm. I can't stop watching the news...this is insane.

I am thinking maybe we should get as many of our Ridgelines loaded up with supplies when they start to clean up and head down there. Even if it's a bonsai trip.
I headed for NYC on 911 as a Fire Fighter / EMT and was turned around when I got there because they had enough help. I sure would like to help someone.

:( Me too Jeff..me too!!
Even to walk in water like this is dangerous. You have no idea whats under there. Scary.
Hey maybe we CAN do something. Maybe we can collect donations and send it to the Fire Department to help with the clean up!
If we all donated at least $10.00, we could send a lot of money to help.

Perkolater 08-30-2005, 07:37 AM Just spoke to one of my cousins. (I am originally from New Orleans and most of my family still lives there). Luckily all of my family members survived the storm as most of them evacuated to Texas, but it appears that at least two of their houses are in areas that are under about 15 feet of water. The bridges over Lake Ponchatrain on I-10 have evidently been damaged and/or washed away so there is no way for them to return home even if they wanted to. Another Levee broke last night and is now flooding an area where my Grandmothers home is.
Unreal. But, at least they survived to rebuild!

Thank goodness your family is all ok. Possessions can always be replaced. I just saw on the news today that it might be up to FOUR months before people can get back into the area. THe levee at Lake Ponchtrain (sp) broke and there is MORE flooding. Just a frightening situation
People from the Superdome are being relocated to the Astrodome. Thank goodness for the generosity of others. I cannot imagine being displaced from my home. Just sad.
tranridgeline 09-01-2005, 10:34 AM Just got a call from my sister-in-law from New Orleans. Amazingly, the hospital had a land line she could use. She had to ride out the storm at Charity Hospital near the Superdoom, we should rename the Superdome. She did not want to leave her husband because he was required to stay at the hospital for emergencies.
We are pretty sure they lost everything. They lived close to the levee. My sister-in-law said that they are getting evacuated to Houston sometime this weekend. We are looking for plane tickets to get her up to Charlotte. Her husband is staying behind to help at the emergency clinics.
This is crazy!

Glad to hear they are OK!
Yooper 09-02-2005, 10:35 PM Does anyone know if there are any forum members that were affected by Katrina? My thoughts and hopes are with them.
It does make you think about preparing for other natural disasters. Living here in Alaska, we get snow storms that knock the power out and we are semi-prepared for that. However, we are waiting for the "Big One" (earthquake) to hit us. Are we prepared for it... no! In the aftermath of Katrina, my wife and I have started to put together an earthquake survival box and to make a plan for escape. It makes you stop and think about what to do and where to go if your world comes crashing down.
I hope this castrophe makes everyone start thinking of their own survival and what to do.
Stay safe.

I am glad to hear your sister and her husband are ok. I read an email sent out by Dr. Norm McSwain to draw attention to the fact that they were indeed still at Charity hospital. Seems like there was poor communication just in that alone. I pray they got out ok.
JaxRidge 09-02-2005, 10:53 PM Being a resident of Florida, we get geared up about this time every year for what could be “the big one”. Even though Jacksonville has not had a direct hit since 1964, the Cat 2 storm did a tremendous amount of damage; a little over a billion dollars in today’s money. While this is quite small compared to what just happened in the gulf, it still was devastating to this area.
Every time there is a storm even remotely close to us, we go into automatic mode and begin to prepare. The city officials set a command center, and begin to plan for the worst. (This is done only if projections have us in the path, or close to the path of the storm.) Folks here in town drain the local supermarkets of supplies, a lot of gas stations run out of gas, and folks that live in a home that cannot withstand the storm go to either family/friends, or to city provided shelters.
The problem right now is that it seems like our local media actually want a storm to hit us. They get all excited every time a storm develops in the Atlantic. Last night is a great example. I happened to be watching a local news station before a football game and the weather man stated that there were two storms in the Atlantic, and one of them would be heading west, hitting Puerto Rico sometime next week.
Later that night I went to NOAA’s web site and checked out the storms. (At this time of the year, a daily event.) That storm is not heading west. It’s heading north and is not a threat to the continental US. Sheesh. Why do these bone heads make such crazy predictions? Most folks around here say they do it for ratings. Shameful.
